With the revelation of the last chapter, now the real underlying storyline begins. Not to say that all that has happened so far is useless fluff. The author must have had the entirety of the story written 33 volumes beforehand (because every single thing that happens drives the story toward its conclusion) and nothing is coincidence.

オレ、蒼月潮。好奇心旺盛な中学生で、お寺のひとり息子なんだ。
I’m Aotsuki Ushio, a middle schooler brimming with curiosity and the only son of a temple priest.

で、ある日オレは、蔵の中に５００年間もはりつけられたままの槍をひきいぬいてしまった。
One day, I pulled out a spear that had been stuck in the wall of my cellar for 500 years.

それおかげで奇妙な妖怪を解放。これ以降”とら”と名づけたヤツと、伝説の“獣の槍”を使って化物退治をするハメに。。。
In doing so, I freed a strange youkai that I named “Tora” and now I’m stuck exterminating bakemono with the legendary “Beast Spear”.

とらは、スキをみてはオレを食べようとする油断ならないヤツだが、“獣の槍”をもっていれば大丈夫。
Tora keeps looking for a lapse in my defenses so that he can try to eat me but as long as I have the “Beast Spear” I’ll be okay.

でも、この槍の力はナゾだらけ。
But the power of the Spear is a mystery.

海の妖“あやかし”戦では、かってに動きだし、強大な力を発揮するもんだからビックリ。
While fighting a sea monster called the Ayakashi, the Spear suddenly came alive and I was surprised by the incredible power it displayed.

深まる槍のナゾにくわえて、母の秘密。。。？オレ、どうなるんだ！？

潮：　 いいか、オヤジよーくきけよ！
オレはガキの頃から母ちゃんは死んだって、
きかされて育ってきたよ！！
それがよ、生きてるっていうじゃねえか！！
それも妖怪の憎しみをかいながらよぉ！！
おい！　どーなってんだよ！？
さあ　説明しろ！ほらほら！！
Ushio: Okay, listen up REAL good, Pops.
Ever since I was a kid, I grew up hearing
that my mother was dead.
You didn’t tell me she’s alive!
And that the youkai hate her!
So, what’s going on!?
Explain it, right now!!


紫暮： あーっうるせえ！父親にゃわかりやすい
日本語をしゃべりやがれっ！
Shigure: You’re being impossible! Speak in Japanese that your father can
understand!

紫暮： ふーむ。今までのコトはだいたいわかった。。。
母親か。。。人違いじゃないのか？
Shigure: Well, I got the gist of what you were saying.
You…mistook someone for your mother?


紫暮： それよりもうしお、みろコスモスが咲いたぞ。
Shigure: Oh, look, Ushio, the cosmos have bloomed…

潮： ハナシをそらさんじゃねえ！
Ushio: Don’t change the subject!


海座頭： たしかに。。。　たしかにあの女のニオイするわ。
Umizatou: Yes…yes, you have the woman’s scent.

潮： 人違いじゃねーみたいだったし。。。
Ushio: It wasn’t like I mistook her for someone on the street…


紫暮： その槍は今までにだいぶつかったのか？
Shigure: You’ve used that spear a lot?

潮： ああ。。。　石食い、鬼、生首、海ヘビ。。。
話した回数だけつかったよ。
Ushio: Yeah…on Ishikui, on an Oni, on some severed head, and on a sea serpent.
Just on those four.


紫暮： 海ヘビを酒に浸したてしょうゆで。。。
Shigure: A little seas serpent soaked in sake with some soy sauce would be…


潮： なんか回を重ねるごとに強くなってるみたいだ。
Ushio: It’s as though I’m getting stronger with each one.

紫暮： む。。。
Shigure: Hm…


潮： 。。。信じられんだろう？　オヤジ。。。
Ushio: …you don’t believe me, do you, Pops?...


紫暮： とーんでもねえ！
おまえもよーやく妖怪の存在を信じる気になったろ。
Shigure: Of course not!
Bu at least you finally believe in the existence of monsters too.

生きてるならどこにいんだっ！？
Ushio: That’s what you get, half-wit!

Is Mom still alive?
If she’s alive, where is she!?


紫暮： 。。。それなら、
Shigure: If that’s what you want…

潮： 。。。それは。。。？
Ushio: …yes?

紫暮： でんわだでてくる！
Shigure: I’ll get the phone.


潮： ちっ！あーあ。
Ushio: Ch! Maaan…

とら： そんなに海座頭のいったコトが気になるのか？
Tora: You’re all worked up over what Umizatou said?


潮： あったりめーだろ。人間は親のコトは気になんだよ！
おめーにゃわかんねーよ。
Ushio: Naturally. Humans care about their parents.
You wouldn’t understand.

とら： へっ、わかりたくもねーな。
Tora: Hn, I don’t want to understand.

潮： オヤジーっ！！
Ushio: Pops!!

潮： オヤジーっ、逃げるのかよーっ、ずるいぞ
バッキャローッ！
Ushio: Pops, are you trying to escape!?

紫暮： いつものように急用なのだ許せっ！
Shigure: Sorry, it’s the usual urgent business!

潮： ダメだーっ　　教えろよーっ！
Ushio: No way! Tell me!


紫暮： ぬしの母は死んだのだっ！
Shigure: Your mother is dead!

潮： うそ　　こきゃがれいっ！
Ushio: That’s a damn lie!

紫暮： なんのっ！
Shigure: What!

潮： とら！ 　バカ、なにやってんだよっ！？
Ushio: Tora! Dummy, what’re you doing!

とら： うるせーっ。いたかったんだぜーっ！！
Tora: Shut up, that hurt!

紫暮： おぬし。。。
Shigure: You…


紫暮： おぬし槍にさされて妖怪か。。。ふむ！
Shigure: You are the youkai that was pinned by the spear…hmm…

とら： なんでえコイツ。。。
Tora: What’s with this guy?

紫暮： まぬけそうなカオだな。
Shigure: You have the face of a fool.


潮： あっ！
Ushio: Ah!


紫暮： あとのコトはいつものように
照道さんに頼んだからいうこときくんだぞっ！
Shigure: Ask me about it after I go do what Shoudou-san asked of me,
like always.


潮： まて　オヤジっ！
Ushio: Wait, Pops!

とら： まてよ コノ。。。
Tora: Wait, watch out for-

潮： くそ～　あれが中年の動きかよっ！？
Ushio: Crap~ Should a middle-aged guy be able to move like that!?

Ushio: Tora, don’t sit on top of those stones.

とら： ほー、人間はあいかわらず死んだヤツに気をつかってんだな。。。
Tora: Huh, humans are always careful around dead guys…


潮： それが礼儀なんだよっ！
Ushio: It’s called manners.


紫暮： さあ、　手をあわせるんだよ。。。
Shigure: Okay, now let me wash your hands…

Shigure: This is where your mother is resting.

潮： とうちゃん、母ちゃんはどこいっちゃったの？
Ushio: Daddy, where is Mommy?


紫暮： 誰もいくことのできない遠い遠い所さ。。。
Shigure: Somewhere far, far away where no one can go…


潮： ちくしょお。。。
Ushio: Dammit…

潮： 母ちゃんはここにいるっていったよな。。。オヤジ。
Ushio: You said she was here, Pops…


おばあさん： 南無。。。
Old Woman: Amen…

影の人： 家々をねり歩き小さな娘をさらっていく。。。
まーた古い妖怪がでやがったな。
。。。でも。。。去んでもらおうか。。。

Figure: You, old youkai, still march through the streets to carry off small children…
I wish you to go from here!


影の人： 変化よ！

Figure: Apparition!

封じることはせん。

Figure: If you leave the girl and go, I will not seal you.


影の人： 人間たちがおぬしたちを捨て置いたのはふびんと思うのだ。。。
しかし、　ぬしらの悪業はみのがせぬ。。。
Shadowed
Figure: I think it is best for humans to leave your kind to your own devices.
However, I cannot overlook such evil deeds.


影の人： いかなる事情があっても殺生をしないのが人も、
もののけも共通の道というもの。。。
Shadowed
Figure: Humans and mononoke can live together so long as
there is no killing.

影の人： どうだ、塚はわたしがつくる。
おとなしく眠ってはくれんだろうか？
Shadowed
Figure: So I have made a mound for you.
Will you go quietly and rest there?


おばあさんたち：　 きゃああ！！

影の人： これだ。年経るとこんな物も妖怪になる。。。

Figure: Here they are. These became youkai with the passage of time…

おばあさん： は。。。針ですか？
Old Woman: Th-they were needles?


影の人： とはいえ、これでもう　妖怪が
そのおじょうちゃんをねらうこともない。
Shadowed
Figure: Just so. They will no longer bother this young lady.

おばあさん： あ。。。ありがとうございます！
Old Woman: Th-thank you so much!


影の人： いえ、これも仏の御加護のたまものです。
Shadowed
Figure: No, this also is the gift of Buddha’s divine protection.


おばあさん： よかった。。。よかったなあ
Old Woman: Thank goodness…thank goodness…

紫暮： もう大丈夫だよ。
Shigure: It’s all right now.

Shigure: Yes, I’m done.


紫暮： うむ。　妖怪を封じ結界も新たに張った。。。
Shigure: Uh-huh. I’ve formed a new sealing barrier for the youkai…


紫暮： この国の妖怪を一匹たりとも「あそこ」へやるものか！
Shigure: Not even one of this country’s youkai will get “there”.


紫暮： 今から奥の院へゆく。ヘリの用意を頼む。。。
Shigure: I’m coming to the inner sanctuary now. Please prepare the
chopper…


紫暮： 上のお方たちに報告がある。
Shigure: I’m reporting to the higher-ups.

＊お勤めの最中の我々を呼ぶとはまったくもって無礼な！！
Senior Priests: What is it, Shigure?
How dare you call us out of the middle of a service!

＊おいのりのもとだと思ってほしい
*wanting others to think about the origins of prayer


紫暮： 申しあげます。
Shigure: I have something to say.

禰宜たち： だからなんだときいておる！？
Priest: And are we not listening!

禰宜たち： もうしてみよ　紫暮！
Priests: Speak, Shigure!


紫暮： 「獣の槍」がひきぬかれました。
Shigure: The Beast Spear has been pulled.

禰宜たち： なにいっ！？
Priests: WHAT!?

禰宜たち： まさか、もうその時がきたと！
この前地下への扉ピクリともせなんだ！
誰じゃ!誰がひきぬいたのだ！？
それにささっておった凶悪な妖怪はっ？
Priests: No, that means the time has come!
There was some subtle disturbance from the doors before!
Who was it? Who pulled it out!?
And what of the terrible youkai that was pinned there?

紫暮： 槍をぬいたのはわたしの息子　潮。。。
Shigure: The one who pulled the spear was my son Ushio…

紫暮： 妖怪は「とら」と潮に名づけられ
現在彼にとりついています。
Shigure: Ushio has named the youkai “Tora” and it is now haunting him.


禰宜たち： ばかなっ！　あの槍は精神力も体力もずばぬけた
選ばれた者のみが扱えるのだぞっ！
Priest: Nonsense! The spear can only be wielded by a chosen one
who is at the height of physical power and emotional strength.

禰宜たち： そうだっ！
Priest: Exactly!


禰宜たち： 妖怪もなぜおまえの息子をすぐに食らってしまわぬのだ！？
Priest: Why has the youkai not simply eaten your son?


禰宜たち： 紫暮っ、おまえまさか息子に槍をもたせて、
なにかたくらんでるのでは。。。
Priest: Shigure, you will take the spear from your son
By whatever means necessary.


影の人： 口が。。。すぎますよ　成宗。。。
Shadowed
Figure: You go too far, Jousou…

成宗： 。。。もっ。。。申し訳ございません
Jousou: I-I apologize.


影の人： 紫暮。。。　
わが宗門の教えのうちに上位の僧しかしらぬ
伝承と大命があるのをしっていますね。
Shadowed
Figure: Shigure…
You know the legends and imperial commands that
only the highest ranked priests of our order know.


影の人： 「獣の槍」に関する伝承を。。。
Shadowed
Figure: Including the legend of the Beast Spear.

影の人： その槍をぬいたからにはぬしの息子も
もはや普通のひとの道は歩めまい。。。
Shadowed
Figure: Your son has pulled the spear and so
he will most likely already be unable to walk the path of a normal
man.

紫暮： は。。。
Shigure: Yes.

禰宜たち： 早急にその妖怪を討つ用意をっ！
それと紫暮の息子を、見極めねばならん！
もしも「獣の槍」に不適任なら大変なことになる！
Priests: It is imperative that we begin preparations to destroy the youkai!
And then we must examine your son!
Who knows what could happen if someone unfit is wielding the
Beast Spear!


成宗： 我ら四人がおのおのみつけ育てた
「獣の槍」の伝承候補者に早く槍を渡すべきでは！
Jousou: We must hand the Beast Spear over to the Candidates,
the four whom we carefully chose and raised!


紫暮： おまちください！
Shigure: Please wait!


紫暮： 見極める。。。役。。。わたしにいただきたい！
息子は頭こそよくありませんがけっして無能ではありません。
かの妖怪も必ずしも討つ必要はないような気がします。
でも。。。もし、
Shigure: I ask that he be tested for this role.
My son is not very smart but he is not incompetent.
I also feel there is no need to destroy the youkai.
But if so…

紫暮： 息子が無能にして妖怪が邪悪なら、
Shigure: If my son is incompetent and if the youkai is in the way,

紫暮： その始末はわたしがつけましょう。
Shigure: I shall deal with them.
