I think Kishimoto may try to tell us that Itachi was once in Nu Anbu and he were forced to kill his best friend(and finally obtained the sharigan). Or if Itachi is not part of Nu Anbu but his best friend was to be.

I see what you mean, but since you can only read the book in one direction at a time, you can only read about one of the boys at a time. So each direction is about one young man, though said young man is either sai or his bro depending on which way you go.

Yeah, didn't really think it was necessary.
I stuggled a little trying to make that sound natural; in mine, the inflection would have been on "talking" to stress how it's happened before.
I thought I put the "instead" in there, but you're right. It needs to be there.
