Explination of Hidan and Kakuzu's names :

飛段 - hi/dan = flying/jumping/rook (chess) - rank, his name is probably best interpereted as "Rook-Rank"
角都 kaku/zu = corner/bishop capital city - his name is probably best interpereted as "Bishop-City"

So there you have it. The rook and bishop are the two of most useful and powerful pieces, equally strong in opposite ways. Probably a good indicator of their relative strength levels and why they act like they do.
