Naruto 360

Chapter 360

-> RTS Page for Naruto 360

So I visit mangahelpers today and find no translations for Naruto based on the original Japanese text, so... I took it upon myself to do one.

This translation is, by the way, completely free. Any group, Jack, Jill or Joe can use it for whatever they see fit, and I'm not calling the cops on anyone.

And since this text is not associated to any group, I went a bit liberal with some of Deidara's lines. What I have to be clear on, though, is that I made it a point that any change made to the letter of the text had to be in accordance with the spirit of the text.

So it's not "I'm having him say this because I felt like it", there's a reason for every last deviation from what would be a "literal" translation. I'm far more familiar with the nuances of the Japanese language than I was a year ago, so I feel I'm more qualified to do that now.

Page 1.

Deidara's secret weapon, C4!

Tobi: Make waaaay!!!

Deidara: I'd been saving this one for Itachi, but... whatever! Hm!

Sasuke: Another bomb?

Sasuke: If so...

Page 2.

360: C4 Garuda.

A gigantic Deidara emerges...behold, C4!

Sasuke: Huge...'this things blows up and -

Page 3.

Deidara: Scrambling for safety already?! Oi!

Deidara: 'think you're actually getting away!? This is C4 Garuda, Baby!

Page 5.

Sasuke: 'failed?

Sasuke: No!

Sasuke: This is -!

Page 6.

Deidara: I win!

Deidara: Art's a blast, baby!

Deidara: KATSU!

Page 7.

Deidara: Sublimation sublime!

Page 8.

Sasuke: Shit...!

Sasuke: You gotta be...kidding...me!

Page 10.

Deidara: Yeah...

Deidara: Oh, yeah...! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! This, boys and girls, is what you call a masterpiece!

Tobi: The microscopic nano-explosive cluster, C4 Garuda...

Tobi: It works by releasing microscopic explosives into the atmosphere as the gigantic Deidara bursts...

Tobi: These are then absorbed by animal life in the vicinity, with the result that every last inch of their bodies ends up rigged to explode.

Page 11.

Tobi: A spine-chilling jutsu, it disintegrates life forms by setting off explosives...

Tobi: At the celular level...!

Deidara: I'll have to thank Itachi next time I see him...kuku...

Deidara: I won! Victory is mine!

Deidara: My Art is -

Page 14.

Sasuke: Way too slow! 'looks like someone here's out of chakra.

Deidara: Those eyes...tch!

Sasuke: Bombs invisible to the naked eye...

Sasuke: Unfortunately for you, sharingan allows me to see chakra as color...

Sasuke: Those miniature explosives laced with chakra?

Sasuke: Guess what? I saw them for the little puffs of smoke they were, right from the start!

Sasuke: I could tell the height you kept to was right above the explosives' range.

Saskue: And being able to see the explosives, avoiding them was a no sweat at all...

Page 15.

Deidara: Guh!

Deidara: When it looked like you'd disintegrated from C4...

Sasuke: It was genjutsu.

Deidara: Ku!

Deidara: Kuku...Yeah...figures...I figured as much...

Sasuke: I made sure not to mortally wound you. Now out with it: Where's Itachi?

Deidara: Like I said...I'll have to thank Itachi...next time I... see him...

Page 16.

Sasuke: Clay?

Sasuke: A bunshin!

Deidara: Guess what? I anticipated your genjutsu from the very beginning!

Deidara: The same as Itachi! Like I was about to fall for the same trick twice!

Page 17.

Deidara: Oh, I'd been training my left eye to resist sharingan since the day I lost to Itachi!

Deidara: Damned if I was about to slack off on training to dispel genjutsu!

Deidara: This is it!

Deidara: Eat C4 up close and personal! Hm!

Sasuke: Kuh!

Sidebar: He'd been long familiar with sharingan! Deidara's experience leads him to victory! Next issue, the battle concludes!

Bottom: Sasuke falls before Deidara!? Next time: A futile path*!

*Since I have no context with which to interpret this title, I have no idea how I'd actually translate it. Take it with a spoonful of salt (not that it says anything clear to begin with).

Thanks, Germinic!

Since I don't know chinese, I have no idea what sort of differences there could be in the text, but there is just so much in Japanese that has no English equivalent that you have to look for creative ways to get the "feel" in there.

Take, for instance, the particle "sa".

俺には煙の塊の様にハッキリと見えていたのさ

A straight translation would be:

To me they looked very clearly as if they were clusters of smoke, sa!

Fixing it up to sound more natural in English:

I saw them very clearly as little clusters of smoke, sa!

However, we still have "sa", which serves to make informal (and depending on the context, insulting) statements of cause and effect, where the effect is known or obvious.

In this case, the effect is that Sasuke saw through Deidara's attack. So Sasuke's stating the reason for the turn of events we've just seen, in a manner which belittles Deidara's abilities (i.e, he's mocking him). Sasuke's basically going "It's simply that I saw your explosions and here I am, with you at my mercy, silly."

To convey this idea, I used "Guess what?", and to keep with the mocking tone of the statement, I made the "little clusters of smoke" into "liffle puffs of smoke", which are seen "for what they are."

That was brilliant, Iwanin! You seem to have captured it very well - I think the way you chose to translate this dialogue as well as the manner of speaking you chose really gets the spirit across.

thx for the translation. It was nicely done, one question though: Shouldn't there a question mark behind this sentence?

Deidara's experience leads him to victory! There is one I believe in the raw and without it, it seems as if Kishi was proclaiming Deidara to have been victorious.

Yeah, there's a question mark, but it doesn't mesh with the text at all, so I killed it... The text is a statement, but the question mark is there to add a *slight* nuance to the effect of "will this really happen!?"

The other option I had was to alter the text to have it say something like "will his experience truly lead him to victory", but that's wrong too, because it's a slight nuance of disbelief that the question mark is meant to express...

At any rate, such is translating...

thx Iwanin!! :D

On my personal note, I don't like in Your translation (comparing to Hisshou :p) that:

If it wasn't for that, I would say, for me it would be better heh :p :D

I have a noob question though.

I've noticed that Deidara always addresses himself as "oira"
as in "Oira no Kachi da!" which got translated as "I win!"

but oira seems to mean "we" in most dictionaries. and it is written in katakana in the manga.
I don't know much of japanese... but still I was wondering, does deidara address himself in the plural form? like royalty? like "victory is ours!"

Just out of curiosity, are you consulting dictionaries in Japanese, or bilingual dictionaries? The former are far more reliable. I looked up the term at goo and found that it originates from "orera." I looked "orera" up, and found this:

(1)一人称。われ。われら。おれたち。男が同輩またはそれ以下の者に対していう。複数にも単数にも用いる

So wether "I" or "we", it makes no difference.

Conversely, you'll find that the normally "singular" term "waga" (my) may also act in the plural sense (our).

So I guess the answer is "no, it's not a royal we." ;)

Don't let the fact that it's written in katakana through you off. Ore is also often written in katakana, while hiragana is normally used for Boku and Atashi.
