Update: Polished a couple of lines here and there.

Page 1.

366: Brothers

Sidebar: “The elder brother took, the younger brother lost. It all began that night…”

Page 2.

“Show yourself, Uzumaki Naruto!” What’s Itachi’s purpose?

Naruto: ‘you here to catch me?

Itachi: No…not at all. I’m simply here to talk.

Page 3.

Naruto (bunshin): Guwah!

Naruto (bunshin): Uwah!

Naruto: Like hell you are!

Page 4.

Naruto: Right…so…”when fighting sharingan one on one, time to run…”

Naruto: “…but if two on one, take him from behind…”

Naruto: Only, with this guy, he casts genjutsu by moving his fingers right after doing a seal…

Naruto: Gotta be on my guard!

Itachi: I see you have the basics of fighting sharingan users down, but…

Itachi: I’m well aware you’re alone.

Itachi: Why not run?

Naruto: Heh!

Naruto: I’m a thousand strong army all by myself!

Naruto: Plus, I’d be crazy to run away! Catching you will make Sasuke come to us!

Page 5.

Itachi: Why do you care so much what happens to my brother? He’s a nukenin (runaway shinobi), after all.

Naruto: Because, if nothing else…

Naruto: I’m more of a brother to him than you!

Page 6.

Naruto: Geronimo! Uoooh!

Page 7.

Itachi: You’re already caught in my genjutsu.

Naruto: Crap!

Itachi: Let me say it one more time…I’m simply here to talk.

Page 8.

Jiraiya: I’m coming in, Tsunade!

*knock knock*

Tsunade: Oh, Jiraiya. You got something for me?

Jiraiya: Oh, just the location of Akatsuki’s leader…

Tsunade: What! You’re kidding!

Tsunade: C’mon, let’s hear it!

Shizune: We’ll draft a battle plan based on the info!

Page 9.

Jiraiya: Now, now, take it easy. No use gettin’ all worked up just yet.

Tsunade: This isn’t one of your novels we’re talking about! We can’t afford to take it easy!

Jiraiya: Acting on impulse’s a sure-fire recipe for disaster – specially in a gamble where the stakes are high.

Tsunade: Come again!

Jiraiya: So how ‘bout it? We go out for some sake, just you and I. It’ll be like old times. I’ll spill the beans there.

Tsunade: Moron! You forget I’m Hokage or something!? I can’t just go out for Sake ‘cuz I feel like it! There are shinobi out there doing mission right now, you know!

Page 10.

Tsunade: Wheeew…

Jiraiya: You know…it wouldn’t kill you to take your own words more seriously. You are technically Hokage, you know.

Tsunade: So, you were saying… Akatsuki’s leader’s in Amegakure* village, right?

*Village hidden by rain.

Tsunade: But we’re talking about a country which conducts thorough investigations and keeps the strictest surveillance on anyone entering or leaving their territory.

Tsunade: They’re xenophobic and so strict with protocol it’s always trouble come the chuunin exam.

Tsunade: It’s the last place where you’d expect someone like that to be operating.

Jiraiya: This very xenophobia works to his advantage. By taking pains to ensure virtually nothing on their country leaks to the outside world, they've managed to keep their dirty little secret well hidden.

Tsunade: Dirty little secret?

Jiraiya: ‘seems the country’s been in a state of civil war for some time now. The village itself is split in two.

Jiraiya: Rumor has it the head of one of the two factions moonlights as leader of Akatsuki.

Page 11.

Tsunade: The country’s located right between the three superpowers of Earth, Wind and Fire…a fact which has made it a battleground time and again when the titans clash. And because of it, they say, it’s yet to see a stable government, and the number of refugees continues to rise.

Jiraiya: Which is why I’m saying I should infiltrate the place and find out if the info’s right or not.

Jiraiya: And we draft our plan once I’m back.

Tsunade: It’s too dangerous, going alone!

Jiraiya: Hey, you seem to forget I’m one of Konoha’s Sannin. And you know what that means as well as I do.

Tsunade: Forgive me...for always putting you up to do the dirty work…

Page 12.

Jiraiya: Hahahahah!

Jiraiya: What’s with you, all of a sudden!

Tsunade: I’m talking about the fact that it was *you* who was originally meant to be Hokage…

Tsunade: The Third always wanted for you to be –

Jiraiya: I tell you, I’m not cut out for that sort of thing. Being free as the wind suits –

Tsunade: You felt guilty for not having been able to stop Orochimaru…

Tsunade: So you were off keeping tabs on him all by yourself, all these years…

Jiraiya: There’s no more need for that now. Plus, I can put out novels quicker like this…

Tsunade: Fact sure is stranger than fiction…I still can’t believe he’s dead…

Page 13.

Tsunade: Remember how with the Third, the three of us used to –

Jiraiya: Our flat chested little Tsunade is now the busty Hokage! Time sure flies…

Jiraiya: You, once gorgeous, are now a fifty year old granny…

Jiraiya: I fancy that bosom of yours is swollen with love for the dearly departed, and my heart goes out to you…but more will be departing as we look on...

Jiraiya: Oh…it’s not quite the same as sitting back and watching...

Jiraiya: Our job is to set the example for the next generation, to be their support.

Jiraiya: Risking your life with a smile, all for the future.

Jiraiya: That’s what cool old geezers do.

Page 14.

Naruto: Wha…whaddaya mean? (dattebayo!)

Naruto: I’m one of your targets, aren’t I!? Then what are you waiting for!

Itachi: I’ll be leaving now…

Itachi: I have this really importat matter to attend to, see…

Naruto: Kagebunshin…

Page 15.

Itachi: So, you’re here…

Sasuke: Who’s there?

Page 16.

Itachi: It’s me…

Itachi: Sasuke!

The bond known as hatred…the moment long awaited arrives without warning!

Itachi appears before Sasuke! What’s his objective? Next time: The loss!

Wow, really good! :thumbs

Although IMHO it's not too literal, you've managed to choose the right English words, sentence structure and idioms as if the manga was written in the English language in the first place! :o

Why thank you! :)

Although, one thing readers need to bear in mind when comparing translations is that it's one thing to be literal and another to be "accurate."

Being too literal can affect the accuracy of the line, sometimes, in as much as it affects the feeling conveyed.

The line I'm most proud of in this particular translation is this one:

"You are technically Hokage, you know."

The "technically" element is there for 仮にも, which means something like "even if pathetic" - although not quite as aggressive. So Jiraiya's saying that as Hokage, Tsunade needs to meet at least a minimum standard, and I think the translation brings that out pretty well - and it was an element lost in translation in all the others.

in regards to that, thanks for your help with the "madara" clarification issue too. anyone who has taken "biblical exegesis" is well aware of the dilemma and compromises one must make in translations...."sitz im laben" and all the like...:p

....especially when narutard fanaticism and flame wars on naruto canon tend to mirror religious disagreements over holy texts...remember the "that jutsu" phrase? ;)

well there are times when literal is more appropriate like in the madara issue and when salvation is on the line but in this instance, your way was way clearer.

i really liked the way you used "thousand man army", xenophobia and moonlighting. it may not be too literal but it sure packs the mouthful literal words into very clear, concise, contemporary english...:D

@kado
you sure it's about between itachi and sasuke and not naruto since it was very brief?

if it's about the last dialogue, i'm pretty sure kado is hoping there will be some uchiha incestual yaoi tone "type" added to that.....:grin

As in "oh, you're here", like Itachi's been expecting him, and he's pleased Sasuke showed up.

You chose some interesting examples.

The use of the term xenophobia was something of a judgement call. They definitely say "closed" (閉鎖的), as in "closed society", which is pretty close to "xenophobic." But when Jiraiya says, in this text, that "xenophobia works to his advantage", the original line is more like "it's precisely because they are rigorous" (read: anal retentive when it comes to protocol, and letting people in and out of the country).

I was looking at the other translations, and what they did was "all the more reason for it."

However, putting it this way makes it sound like Pain's there because it's the last place you'd expect to find them (Tsunade's previous line) - but what Jiraiya's pointing to is the country's practices themselves.

"Anal retentive" doesn't sound very well in this sort of context (although it's the most "literal" translation), so I just indicated the Xenophobia responsible for the anal retentiveness.

The moonlighting bit - "rumor has it the head of one of the factions and Akatsuki's leader are one and the same." So Jiraiya's very clear in stating the man has two separate occupations - moonlighting if I ever saw it.

The expression fits with Jiraiya's casual tone and his role of "spy."

oh i forgot i also liked the "dirty little secret" part...especially since it portrays more the "shame/disgrace" there is to it in a context non-japanese can understand much more easily, especially with the differing notions of "honor" in a japanese context and the "gaijins"...

... ok, I promise this'll be the last pointless remark of mine here (probably), but I just couldn't help myself, because again you chose a very interesting example.

A HUGE, MAMMOTH misconception is that Japanese ethics are dictated by some fancyful notion of "honor" that we simply don't share. This is probably due to how people have chosen to translate Samurai films in the past, but has no basis on reality whatsoever.

Ask any Japanese how you say "honor" and they'll hesitate. 名誉? 誇り?The fact is that there is no direct translation whatsoever, and I get the feeling (though I can't be sure, since I've never seen the same Samurai movie in both languages) that the term they're translating as "honor" is often 一分, which is equivalent to 面目, which is honor in as much as it's a shameful to lose it, but not in as much as you derive additional stature or pride from maintaining it - and in fact, you cannot increase it. Thus, in the case of Samurai, duty is just as accurate a translation.

Shame, or embarrassment, on the other hand, is a notion they have here, the implications of which is definitely different than in other parts of the world. Basically, Japanese are easily embarrassed and seek to avoid embarrassment at all cost - not because their pride is particularly high, but because they take society's opinion of them very seriously.

Here, if there's a problem in our society or in one of our social groups, we normally don't care if others find out, especially if it's something that's out of our control.

There's a civil war going on here? So what's it to you. What do I care if you find out.

Where as the Japanese perspective would be: "Countries and villages are supposed to be united. If other countries were to find out that we're not united, oh, the shame! What they would think of us!"

whoa thanks for the clarification between "honor" and "shame"....i agree that standing/contribution to society is a bit more important than personal interests in a confucian/taoist/buddhist based far-eastern society. takes cover-up to a whole new level!
