UPDATE. Good news: I now know what most of Ryuuma's attacks mean. It's french, yes, but they're all fencing terms, so they refer to specific types of attacks or movements. The "coup droit" last chapter, then is meant to be translated as "direct strike", rather than "right strike."

Special thanks to me, for figuring the pattern out all by myself. :)

Chapter 467: The Pirate Zorro VS The Samurai Ryuuma

Enel’s Space Opera, Vol. 32: “Let’s begin by torching the place!”

Page 2.

The Warriors Clash!

Franky: Well, we got ventilation now…

Brooke: Why, I can only imagine the strength needed for a thrust to fly through the air!

Ryuuma: Yohohoho! It appears we both missed…

Franky: Wha-!?

Page 3.

Ryuuma: Yohoho! A “close shave” indeed…

Franky: What the hell? Just when did Haramaki* counter attack!?

*Haramaki is Zorro. Franky’s referring to his waist (er, stomach) band, a “Haramaki” (lit. something you wrap around your belly).

Brooke: At nearly… the same time…!

Brooke: Dear me, his attacks fly through the air as well!

Brooke: This Samurai Zombie fellow…it’s my shadow controlling him, but… in life he was most likely a Master Samurai!

Brooke: These two men… they might just have the same type of muscle strength as sword fighters!

Franky: So what does that mean again?

Brooke: It means their destructive power works the same way. Rest assured…

Brooke: …this battle will be over before long!

Page 4.

Ryuuma: Prelude Au fer*!

*Au fer is a type of attack in fencing: "An attack that is prepared by deflecting the opponent's blade." Fer means "iron."

Zorro: A weapon breaking move!

Zorro: Nigiri…

Zorro: Hirameki…

Zorro: Maguma*!

(*Nigiri Hirameki Maguma: Demon bear flashing double slash)

Page 5.

Franky and Brooke: Uoh!

Ryuuma: Gavotte Bond Avant*!

*Gavotte, or gavot, is a french folk dance. Bond Avant is lit. "foward leap", a fencing move.

Page 6.

Zorro: Nitouryuu….*

*Two sword style.

Zorro: Iai*!

*Iai is a special kind of attack in Kenjutsu where you cut your opponent immediately upon drawing your weapon from its sheath.

Zorro: Rashoumon*!

*Something like "gate of perdition." It's the name of a famous novel and a play, and also what one of Tokyo's red light districts was called at one point in time. The "ra" in rashoumon merely phonetic, the shou is "life" and "mon" is gate. "Ra" is used as a phonetic in words such as "Ashura" (a kind of supernatural being), "Shura" (strife) and, er, "Mara" (cock).

Zorro: Damned if he didn’t take it!

Page 7.

Franky: Woah! The pillars are gone! Wait a minute…the roof’s gonna collapse!

Franky: We gotta move it!

Franky: You! Hold on tight! We’re making a break for it! This roof’s comin’ down hard!

Zorro: 730 pound hou*!

*Hou is the name of a large real life bird, and of a mythical bird with huge wings in China (it says so in the dictionary).

Ryuuma: Polka Remise*!

*The polka is a dance, obviously. Remise is an "immediate replacement of an attack that missed or was parried, without withdrawing the arm" in fencing.

Franky: Weapon left!

Page 8.

Franky: *cough*. *cough*

Franky: Too…too close!

Franky: Huh?

Zorro: Nuaaah!

Page 9.

Brooke: Dear me! Careful, you’ll fall off!

Zorro: He’s on the opposite side, eh!

Zorro: *huff*

Ryuuma: *huff*

Zorro: Uwah!

Page 10.

Zorro: Uoh!

Zorro: Falling!

Zorro: *Huff*!

Page 11.

Brooke: Amazing…on such loose footing…

Zorro: I get the feeling this goes on for long and my Katana’ll break. The muscle strength I'm facing here's definitely a legendary Samurai's.

Page 12.

Franky: Uwah!

Franky: Oi! ‘you alright?

Page 13.

Zorro: Ittouryuu…*

*Single sword style.

Zorro: Hiryuu*!

*Flying dragon.

Ryuuma: Hana-uta...*

*Humming song...

Ryuuma: Sanchou*!

*three chou. No idea what chou is meant to stand for here (it has a lot of diferent meanings).

Page 14.

Ryuuma: Yahazugi-*

*bowstring notch cut.

Page 15.

Zorro: Kaen*!

*Flame!

Page 16.

Ryuuma: Uoh!

Ryuuma: The cut’s burst into flames!

Page 17.

Ryuuma: Defeated!

Ryuuma: Shuusui*! This blade once belonged to a legendary Samurai...

*Autumn water

Ryuuma: If it is you who are to be its master…then rest assured…

Ryuuma: It will serve you gladly!

Page 18.

Franky: He… say something just now, the Samurai?

Franky: So… *huff*… what does it … mean?

Brooke: It means... the duel is over… and let me say… I’d never seen a fight such as this!

Brooke: This Samurai fellow… He never bothered to fight me seriously at all!

Brooke: What a remarkable duel!

Ryuuma: It pains me ever so greatly…

Ryuuma: To have disgraced this Samurai flesh with the scorn of defeat!

Page 19.

Zorro: Shame, but no more than that. A Samurai’s body and mind are meant to be one.

Zorro: Man, would I have ever liked to meet you in life…

Ryuuma: Uooh!

Brooke: Wah!

Brooke: Oh!

Brooke: It…it’s…

Brooke: Baaaack!

Brooke: My shadow’s…. retuuurned!

Zorro: I’ll take the sword, but…not the credit for beating you…

Zorro: Samurai of the Land of Wa*!

The duel ends!

*The Land of “Wa” is another name for Japan.

Thank you very much! :)
I want to ask you about the line "not the credit for beating you". I've seen it translated as "let's pretend this fight didn't happen" in two different places. I don't know Japanese, so I have no idea what he's really saying (and why there are so many versions). Could you explain why you translated it this way?

Gladly.

The original line is

刀は貰うが、勝負はなかったことにしようぜ。

Katana wa morau ga, shoubu wa nakatta koto ni shiyou ze.

Katana wa morau ga = "I'll take the Katana, but"

The next part is the tricky one: "shoubu wa nakatta koto ni shiyou ze."

Shoubu (勝負) has no direct translation. Some people may wish to translate it as "match" or "fight", but this is incorrect, strictly speaking. Look it up in the dictionary, and it's "the fact of winning or losing, or that which determines the winner or loser."

nakatta koto ni shiyou = "let's say (or pretend) [something] didn't happen."

So Zorro's saying "let's say there was no shoubu" = "let's say the fight had no winner." So I'm afraid the other texts are mistranslations: he's not saying there was no fight, he's saying there's no winner.

"I'll take the Katana, but let's say there was no winner (in this fight)." By this he means that he claims Ryuuma's sword, but not as someone who legitimately beat him, seeing as how Ryuuma was not whole (it's just his body and Brook's shadow).

Thus my translation.

Hope this clears things up. :)
