As for this chapter's notes...

Biological detection. As you can see, Ane-san uses a snake to find the chameleon. On page 5, panel 5, the SFX bubble over the snake indicate it's *sniffing,* looking for the chameleon. Snakes can actually detect heat from other living creatures, and rely on this ability when hunting, but if I remember correctly it's actually their tongue (not their nose) they rely on the most. That's why they're constantly sticking it out.

Don't you squint like that. Literally "don't put so much power into it." A bit of a liberal translation on my part.

'the hell you talkin' bout, boy! Literally "I'd never heard there was one such." More likely than not, Kashira means he didn't know Jiraiya had an apprentice with Rinnegan, but it's also possible he means to say he didn't know of any apprentice of Jiraiya to begin with. Thus, I left it vague.

One way ticket to the next life! Literally "If he' twisted, gotta kill 'im." I went with a much longer, and obviously somewhat liberal translation because, well, the original doesn't work all that well in English, IMHO. The whole "twisted" thing just means he didn't turn out well, so I figured using a tone as if he's scolding a child would work.

Epitome of lust. Literally "no more than lustful/lecherous." So yeah, the toad's not calling Jiraiya the epitomy of lust, but I figured it worked well within the context.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

On the whole prophecy issue...I did my homework. I wrote to Nihongaeri, I read all the other translations, and I read countless posts on 2ch...the conclusion of my extensive research is there are lots of murky points in this chapter where the prophecy's concerned.

Let's start with the title, 予言の子. As is, the title has the following potential translations:

A child of prophecy
The child of prophecy
The children of prophecy
The child of the prophecies
The children of the prochecies
...

So yeah, both "child" and "prophecy" could be, technically, either singular or plural. As the term is used in this chapter, you get the impression that prophecy should remain singular, but there are actually two prophecies in there, and - though it doesn't seem all that likely to me, personally - there's the possibility that both allude to the same child (more on this later).

Another sticking point: そいつも予言の子. "He's another child of prophecy (out of many)." Ok...well, I guess 予言の子 can refer both to the "revolutionary" the prophecy alluded to, or any one of Jiraiya's students, since they're all "candidates" to become this revolutionary. The Japanese readers at 2ch can't seem to agree on this either. I left it at just "a child of prophecy." Vague enough to work for me.

As for the prophecy itself, again we have the singular/plural issue to worry about. Perhaps the most logical interpretation is simply that one of Jiraiya's apprentices will bring either peace or chaos to the world, depending on what Jiraiya does. Then again, it's also possible that he means multiple of Jiraiya's apprentices will bring either peace or chaos to the world. Yet another possibility (which seems likely to me) is that one (or a group of) Jiraiya's apprentices is capable of bringing about chaos, while another (or group of others) is capable of bringing about peace.

Supporting this last interpretation is a bit of common sense: Pain seems capable of bringing about destruction, but not peace - especially not if Jiraiya's yet to make his fateful decision. On the other hand, Naruto doesn't seem capable of bringing about destruction - unless, of course, he's possesed by the Kyuubi, but then it wouldn't technically be Naruto.

And speaking of Naruto, the boy who wanders into Mount Myouboku may well have been Jiraiya when he was younger, but then again, it could also be just about anyone else who has yet to wander in there - including Naruto (in which case he could potentially be the child in both prophecies).

So, when speculating, just remember one thing: the prophecy is vague enough that it allows for multiple interpretations. There's more than one way to read the original text, and not even native Japanese speakers are sure what it means.

Bear this in mind.
