Medaka – You’re wrong

Hitoyoshi – Ahh!
- Why the hell do you always appear behind people!?

Medaka – If you’re that concerned about how the uniform looks then why don’t you wear your jersey under your jacket?
- It’ll most likely look far better

Hitoyoshi – It’ll probably look stupid…

Medaka – I just checked the suggestion box
- As of tomorrow maintaining and checking the suggestion box will be your job
- The job takes is of the highest priority, so make sure you don’t slack off

Ariake – Erm… Sorry
- To tell you the truth I didn’t really think that this was something I should be talking to 1st years about
- But after hearing from a friend about the kendo hall incident…

- Class – 2nd year 9th class
- Name – Ariake senpai (upperclassman)

Medaka – Don’t even think about it, go ahead
- I will take requests from anyone!

Ariake – The thing I’ve come to you about is

Medaka – Horrific

Ariake – I was chosen to represent the school in the sprint event in the next competition
- I was really happy as it’s pretty rare that a second year gets chosen to represent the school
- One week ago…
- I found my spikes in this state

Hitoyoshi – Do you have any suspects in mind?

Ariake – I don’t know
- My shoes were just left in the changing room
- Anyone could have done it
- Actually
- I don’t trust any of them!

Ariake – It’s traditional that the competition for a regular place on the team here at Hakoniwa School is rough
- It’s probably normal to be treated a little hostile after being chosen for a place, right?
- That’s why I was ready for something to happen
- But this… I never thought anyone would go this far

Medaka – By the looks of it I’d say you’ve cherished these shoes for quite some time now
- And with your shoes in this sort of a state I’m guessing you can’t train, am I right?

Ariake – For the moment I’m having to use trainers
- I can’t talk to the coach about this
- I’m worried that students who are under this sort of stress might be taken off the team
- But most of all I can’t bring myself to practice with the people who were probably the ones who did this to me!
- Every one’s a suspect! I can’t trust anyone!
- I’m so upset… I can’t even sleep at night!!

Hitoyoshi – Today!?
- How can I say it
- The sports clubs are less wholesome than I expected
- I mean when we were campaigning there were rumours made up about you and everything
- But do you really think it’s going to be doable
- There you go again making a grand proclamation like solving the case today
- Especially from what resources we’ve got, there’s nothing here to tell us who the culprit is
- Given the fact that this all happened right after the announcement of the new team members
- It’s likely to be one of the female members of the athletics club, but really,
- How many people do you think that is!?

Medaka – ‘A female athletic club member’ ‘Someone who’s been in the club for a long time’ ‘A sprint specialist’ and ‘someone who cherishes the same brand of running shoes’
- ‘Left handed’ and ‘a reader of Fuguruma Newspaper’ who ‘lives on block 23’
- Who does that describe?

Hitoyoshi – Heh?

Medaka – These shoes have been cut to pieces
- In actuality cutting shoes with scissors is not an easy task
- However, if you look carefully, the cuts were made exactly along the seams
- It’s suspiciously precise
- Without knowing just how such a shoe ages and frays through normal use this would be impossible
- The culprit would have to have been someone whose owned the same type of shoes and used them over an extended period of time
- But more than that

Medaka – Whilst cutting the shoes to ribbons as the culprit did, not one mark was made on the brand logo
- Odd though it might sound
- It could be said that the culprit is someone who loves this particular brand of shoes
- Looking at this cut even more is apparent
- See
- It appears the culprit was using left handed scissors

Hitoyoshi – Even having been told I can’t see it…
- And the fact that there letters were from Fuguruma Newspaper?
- It clear that you deduced that from looking at the cuttings, however
- What can you really discern from just looking at these letters?

Medaka – Even though on the surface they’re just individual letters
- There are parts of articles written on the back (if you shine a light on it)
- Looking at the text on the back of these cuttings these were not all taken from just one paper
- Rather they were taken at random from a week’s worth of Fuyama Newspapers.
- The culprit did not buy the newspaper for the purpose of making this letter
- Rather it is reasonable to say they used only newspapers which were lying around the house

Hitoyoshi – And the fact that she lives in the 23rd block?

Medaka – It is often the case that newspapers undergo alterations depending on the time of day they are printed
- The newspapers used for the cuttings were the 14th editions which got delivered to block 23.

Hitoyoshi – Such deductive power
- She’s so unnerving!!

[out of box] – Does that mean she remembers every article in every newspaper!?

Medaka – I can’t imagine that there will be many who fit all the criteria
- Lets start searching
- And find the culprit
- Actions which undo the hard work of others
- Crimes which hold back those trying their best
- These are the things I hate the most!!

Hitoyoshi – It’s not the first time I’ve thought about it
- But where the hell do you get your information from, Shiranui?

Shiranui – Ahahaha
- If you intend on remaining a character on the side of justice then its best you don’t know
- On top of that, Isahaya senpai
- Failed to become a regular on the team when Ariake was chosen

- It must be embarrassing for a third year to be replaced by a second year
- It’s almost certain that she’s the culprit (wasn’t much of a mystery in the end)

Medaka – However Zenkichi
- The fact of the matter is we have no hard evidence
- ‘Almost certain’ isn’t the same as ‘certain’
- We mustn’t treat her as a criminal based solely on circumstantial evidence

Hitoyoshi – It’s all well and good being an idealist and all
- But we have no means of actually getting any hard evidence
- We aren’t the police after all
- And its not like we can just go up to her and ask her straight
