Chapter 49

01

Editor: Are you really going to stop?
Fukuda: If you don't make Mashiro-kun stop, we'll keep drawing! Yoshida-san, you saw him in the hospital, didn't you?
Title: Page 49 Recall and Calls
Text to the right: The editors and authors face off!!

Editor: Mashiro-kun wouldn't want you to stop drawing because of "Trap."
Fukuda: True enough. He might blame himself, so we shouldn't tell him this while he's sick.

Fukuda: Anyways, if the chief editor doesn't repeal his decision about "Trap," the four of us are going to stop drawing.
Fukuda: We've made up our minds.

02

Editor: How long do you plan on doing this?

Fukuda: Until "Trap" is brought back, of course.
Hiramaru: We've all agreed on that.

Hattori: ...!! If "Trap" doesn't come back until April, you all plan on not doing anything until April?
Fukuda: That's right.
Editor: Some of you won't be able to keep paying your assistants during that time, though.

Nakai: Th-that's right...

Eiji: I can pay for everyone. I have a lot of money. I have about a hundred million yen I have no use for.
Eiji: I'd be glad if it would be of some use.
Eiji: And if Ashirogi-sensei needs it, I'd assist him, too.

Editor: Well, he does have 10 volumes out totalling in eight and a half million sales...

03

Hattori: ...Then let me ask you this.

Hattori: How much of a repeal do you want?
Hattori: I don't understand why they would wait until April for "Trap" to resume, but if the chief editor revises it to the day he's released from the hospital, would you start drawing?

Fukuda: ! ...We didn't think this far ahead...
Hiramaru: Regardless whether it's April or the day he's released from the hospital, it's until "Trap" is back.

Editor: Hiramaru-kun, you're just taking advantage of this, so shut up.
Hiramaru: Wh-what...?

Hiramaru: You can say I'm taking advantage of the situation, but it could look like all of us besides Fukuda-sensei are taking advantage of it.
Hiramaru: However are all united in our resentment of the chief editor's decision. It's not like we don't want to draw our mangas...
Editor: Liar.

Hattori: So what about the rest of you?
Hattori: Do you also intend to boycott even if the chief editor gives in and says he'll bring "Trap" back the day Mashiro-kun is released from the hospital?

04

Fukuda: You can't trick us with that.
Fukuda: We'll talk about that once the chief editor changes it to his release from the hospital.

Editor: ...They seem pretty resolute.

Eiji: Okay, for the months we're not in Jump, we'll go to another magazine.
Eiji: Let's move.
Fukuda: Why would you say that now...?
Editor: D-don't be an idiot!
Editor: A-anything but that...We'd all be fired.

Eiji: Is that so? How sad. You've done a lot for me, Yuujirou-san.
Eiji: I guess I'll keep myself from drawing...even though I really want to.

Editor: Please do.

Editor: Nakai-kun, Aoki-kun, you understand, right?

05

Editor: A popular manga that's been running for 2 years like "Crow" taking off and one that is in 13th place around its 10th chapter like "hideout door" taking off are two different things.
Editor: If you screw this up, it could be the end for you.

Nakai: E-eh? Th-that would be a problem.
Aoki: I don't mind.

Nakai: Eh?
Aoki: I, too, am asking the chief editor to change his mind about doing something this unreasonable.
Aoki: I believe that he is mistaken about this.

Fukuda: Oh, Lady Aoki, you're the best!
Fukuda: You're truly lovely today.
Hiramaru: Yes, Aoki-san, you're great. I love you.
Nakai: I told you guys to...

Fukuda: Talking to our editors here will accomplish nothing. We need to go to the chief editor and tell him what we think.
Hiramaru: That's right. We can straight up tell him we're taking a break.

Editor: H-hey, wait.
Editor: Just let them.

06

Editor: We can't do that.
Editor: I don't like the chief editor's decision either and Fukuda-kun and the others are pretty determined. I want to see whether he overturns his decision because of the boycott or if he lets them stop drawing.
Editor: Y'know, our job is to get the manuscript from the authors and get it in the magazine.
Editor: Then, you work towards getting the manuscript for "hi-door."

Editor: I really don't think I can get these two to stop boycotting.
Fukuda: You got that right.
Eiji: Yuujirou-san, you certainly understand this.

Editor: But make sure to draw the manuscript in case the chief editor repeals his decision and you don't quit.
Eiji: Roger.
Fukuda: Understood.
Hiramaru: Eh...?

Editor: Hiramaru-kun, you make sure to draw one, too. Okay?
Hiramaru: Of course.
Hiramaru: Th-that's right... I still have to draw...This was pointless...

Editor: ...It's no use... We won't be able to convince them any further.
Editor: Okay...We'll go discuss this with the chief editor, but you all won't be coming.
One of the mangaka: Why?
Editor: Because it would make this more complicated.

07

Old man: Moritaka-kun.

Mashiro: Ah, sorry. Did I wake you?
Old man: No, I slept during the day, so I haven't been able to fall asleep.

Old man: I heard what all those people were talking about. You're a manga artist.

Mashiro: ...Yes.

Old man: When I was younger, I wanted to be an actor. I played a lot of minor roles in movies, but I never got popular.
Old man: But I did my very best, so I have no regrets. Thinking back on it, that was the best time of my life.
Mashiro: Is that so? It's amazing that you were in movies.
Old man: Being young is a wonderful thing.

Old man: You don't have to hold back because of me. I'm cheering for you. Do your best.
Mashiro: Thank you very much.

08

Chief editor: Why have you two group leaders come to me?

Editor: Niizuma Eiji, Hiramaru Kazuya, Fukuda Shinta, Aoki Kou, and Nakai Takurou say that they'll stop drawing as long as "Detective Trap" is on hiatus... They're protesting your decision.
Chief editor: ! ...In other words, they're boycotting.
Editor: Yes...

Editor: W-we will of course try to persuade them not to to the very end, but they're quite determined. And if worse comes to worse...
Editor: They really will stop. I felt an amazing amount of unity between them.

09

Chief editor: Getting the manuscript is your job as editors.
Editor: Yes.

Chief editor: If you don't get the manuscript, it's your responsibility.
Chief editor: And that makes it my responsibility, too.

Chief editor: Do your very best to make sure you get the four manuscripts from them.
Chief editor: That's all I'm going to say.

Editor: ...B-but... if you bring back "Trap," they said they'd start drawing...
Chief editor: I've already made my decision regarding that.

Editor: This really is hopeless. At this rate, Issue 32's gonna be a sight to see...
Editor: If that happens, it won't be long before there's a big personnel change... And that'll include us.

10

Hattori: Chief editor.
Hattori: Can you at least change it from when Ashirogi Muto graduates from high school to when Mashiro-kun is released from the hospital?
Hattori: If you do that, it won't be impossible to convince Niizuma-kun and the others.

Chief editor: I've already made my decision regarding that.

Chief editor: What are you doing? Persuade your authors to give you their manuscripts.
Chief editor: And make your own preparations in case you can't do that.
Editor: Ah...
Editor: Yes.

Editor: Ahhh, I guess I'll go to Nakai's place to convince him...
Editor: Must be nice with Aida-san. You actually have a chance. There's no way Hiramaru will make his manuscript...

Guy: Manga authors getting along like this can really be a problem.
Chief editor: You may be right.

11

Box: The next day.
Someone: Did Azuki say she was coming today?
Someone: Umm, she said she'd come by for a bit after school.

Someone: It really looks like you'll finish Chapter 19 by tomorrow.
Mashiro: Oh, sorry, but could you come by early tomorrow and take the manuscript to our studio and give it to Ogawa-san?

Mashiro's mom: Moritaka...
Mashiro: Mom, don't worry. I've told you that I know my body best.
Mashiro's mom: You keep telling me that...

Miura: Hello.

Takagi: Miura-san.
Miyoshi: Hello.
Mashiro: Even thought the chief editor said he wouldn't run it even if I drew it, I'm not going to give up until the very end. I'll have Chapter 19 in by Friday as usual.
Miura: I know, I know.

Miura: I'll take good care of it once you give it to me, but the chief editor pretty much never goes back on something once he's made a decision...

Miyoshi: But if the surgery's over and he finished the manuscript, he might change his mind.
Miura: ...That's what we're all hoping.

12

Miura: I'm so sorry about this. I really should have stopped him...
Mashiro's mom: No...I know best of all that no matter who tried to stop him, he wouldn't stop.

Mashiro: The surgery's scheduled for this Monday. If I get the storyboard as usual, I should be able to make the next chapter in time, too.
Miura: You really should rest after your surgery...
Mashiro's mom: That's right.
Mashiro: I can draw while I rest.

Miura: ...I shouldn't tell him about Fukuda-kun and the others' boycott. If he knew they were stopping too, he'd work himself to the very end.

Azuki: Hello.
Miyoshi: Mihoooo!
Miura: Okay, I'll make sure to come get the manuscript on Friday.
Mashiro: Okay, please do.

Mashiro's mom: ...If I stay, I'll cause a certain patient to mentally collapse.
Takagi: C'mon.
Takagi: Let's go, Miyoshi.
Miyoshi: Eh? Ah? R-right.

Azuki: ...Kaya, Takagi-kun, you can stay.
Miyoshi: What are you saying? If we leave you two alone, you can kiss. Kiss him!

13

Mashiro: The surgery will be on Monday.
Azuki: Is that so?

SFX: *take out*

Azuki: ...Here, Mashiro-kun.
Mashiro: ! Thanks.
Text on the charm: Charm

Azuki: I said I wasn't worried about the surgery, but I actually am, so I'm going to skip school and come.
Mashiro: Azuki-san, you said that your school is strict about absences, so you don't have to do that. The surgery has a 99% chance of success.
Azuki: Eh, what about that 1%?
Azuki: I'm definitely coming.

Azuki: We're in our third year of high school.
Mashiro: ? Why are you saying something obvious like that?

Azuki: ...Kaya just said...
Mashiro: Eh?

Miyoshi: You can kiss. Kiss him!
Mashiro: Eh? Sh-she couldn't mean...

14

Mashiro: A-Azuki-san...You wouldn't be saying this because there's a 1% chance I'll die, would you?
Azuki: Eh? What are you saying? I don't think you're going to die. Why would you say that?

Mashiro: Ah, sorry...but if I died without ever having kissed someone.
Mashiro: Ah...

Azuki: Am I weird for not being that way?

Azuki: I don't want to kiss you, Mashiro-kun...Ah, sorry...I mean, I've never had the desire to do so...

Mashiro: I think I understand.
Azuki: Really?

Mashiro: When I'm with you, Azuki-san, it goes all white inside my head and I can't think about these kinds of things...
Mashiro: I'm just happy being together with you...
Mashiro: Or rather...

Azuki: Good. I'm the same way.
Mashiro: But is that really "good"? It feels like I'm being rude to you...

Azuki: Ah ha ha. I'm glad...

15

Box: I handed in the rest of Chapter 19 on Friday like I had promised and Miura-san brought the first volume of "Detective Trap" which had yet to go on sale.
Box: The anesthesia for the surgery took effect and, when I opened my eyes, it was already over. The next day I was allowed visitors if they were only there for a short time, but I was still in a little bit of pain.

Takagi: You really do need to rest after being cut open.
Mashiro: I told you I can draw while I rest.

Takagi: At least wait until tomorrow.
Mashiro: I wonder if I can make it in time.
Takagi: You can. This time we have Katou-san on Monday and Takahama-san said he could come out anytime on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
Mashiro: Fine, I'll just rest for today.
Miyoshi: What a good boy you are, Moritaka-chan.

Box: And we actually managed to finish Chapter 20 a week after my surgery.

Mashiro: Tell Ogawa-san to use more tone on this panel to show the light and darkness and it'll be okay.
Someone: Understood.

Takagi: Saiko this is a picture I took with my cell of the flat display for "Trap" that was in the bookstore.
Mashiro: Wow...I really need to keep drawing.

Mashiro: ...It comes down to tomorrow. I know the sample book for Issue 32 still doesn't have it, but I have to see it with my own eyes.
Takagi: Oh, Miura-san said he'd bring it by tomorrow.

16

Box: The next day
Mashiro: It's not just "Trap". "Crow", "Kiyoshi", "Otter", and "hideout" aren't in here either...
Takagi: Wh-why!?

Editor: Damn it... I thought I could at least convince Nakai and Aoki, but they didn't give me a manuscript...
Hattori: They were serious, too...
Hattori: They're quite stubborn...
Editor: At this rate, the same thing'll happen in the next issue, too...

Fukuda: Monday's gonna be a sight to see.
Assistant: You all are amazing.

Nakai: This is bad... But I can't be the only one to betray them...
Nakai: Well, I've taken a week off. I'll use this time to draw an even better manuscript....

Hiramaru: Now I can rest for a week.
Editor: Hiramaru-kun, you're definitely the one that's enjoying this the most...

17

Mashiro: Wh-what's going on!?
Miura: They're boycotting as long as "Trap" is gone...

Miura: We're out because of "sudden illness,"
Miura: but Fukuda-san and the others are because of "circumstances of the authors"...
Text in magazine: The people, organizations, and events in Weekly Shonen Jump have no relation with existing ones. This week's "Crow", "Kiyoshi Knight", "Otter #11", and "hideout door" are on break due to the authors' circumstances.

Mashiro: Fukuda-san and the others...even Eiji...
Mashiro: Th-this issue of "Jump" will be in stores on Monday. This is going to be bad.
Miura: Yeah... Fukuda-kun and the others are quite insistent about waiting until "Trap" is back...

Mashiro: !... They can't do that! They can't all stop because of us.
Takagi: That's right. We don't want this.
Miura: Mashiro-kun, don't get so worked up. You'll tear your stitches out.

Mashiro: First and foremost...
Mashiro: what about the readers who look forward to reading those mangas every week.

Miura: I know how you feel...But I have something to discuss with you...

18

Miura: Chapter 19 wasn't published...You should just accept the fact that "Trap" won't be published until after you're released from the hospital.

Mashiro: Wh-why would you say that, Miura-san? We finished Chapter 19 and Chapter 20.
Mashiro: I can keep drawing.
Miura: Y-yes...I know that, but...

Hattori: If the chief editor revises it to until the day he's released from the hospital, would you start drawing?
Hattori: Can you at least change it from when they graduate from high school to when Mashiro-kun is released from the hospital?

Miura: The chief editor said that "Trap" wouldn't come back until you've graduated high school.
Miura: And Fukuda-kun and the others said that they would stop drawing until "Trap" came back...
Miura: But if the chief editor were to let "Trap" come back on your release from the hospital instead of your graduation...
Miura: Fukuda-kun and the others might give in and end their boycott.
Miura: And if it would end the boycott, the chief editor might give in and change it to your release from the hospital...I'll carry out the negotiations...

Takagi: If you can manage that, it would be great.
Takagi: We don't want Fukuda-san and the others to quit.

19

Box: Monday July 4th. Issue 32 of "Weekly Shonen Jump" and the first volume of "Detective Trap" come out.
Editor: I'm very sorry...
Editor: Yes, yes, about that...

Text: What will become of the boycott plan now that it's been carried out!?

Editor: Well, we all knew this would happen.
Hattori: It even made the news. Five titles from "Weekly Shonen Jump" take the week off... But it's ironic. The sales department says it's selling better than usual.... I guess people who don't usually buy it are buying it out of curiosity.
Editor: Hey, Akira, Yuujirou. Quit talking and answer the phone.
