Shounen,Shounen,Shounen,Seinen,Shounen,....
Josei?:blink

Yes, Seeing is believing! MH has shoujo/josei's translation. Now you know what's the pros of female translators!(Just kiddin') But I have to admit I am more of a Shounen/Seinen girl. I still read some shoujo/josei, but there are some I really don't touch because I can't stand too much fluff. I like blood gashing and seeing heads bouching on the ground more. :tem

I think that's why "Honey and Clover" is so special to me because it looks so fluffy and yet I wasn't turn off at all. The language used in there is simply one of the most beautiful manga I ever read. I usually pick series that are more underrated to work on, but strange to say, this popular manga didn't even have a complete series scanlations at all. Everyone seems to know it through the anime.
And so, "Honey and Clover" is a work I always want to work on since a year ago, but I couldn't do at that time due to my Japanese Proficiency. I still don't think my Japanese is fantastic now, but I like to challenge myself. And here's the product. I am glad how it turns out, and doing this truly make me understand the difference between Shounen/Shoujo and Seinen/Josei. Phew~
I hope the length didn't scare you off(although even myself was deeply surprised by the length...:yelling)
I will work on this on my pace, but don't worry. That doesn't mean I would take a year to release one chapter.:tem

My translations are free to be used by anyone for scanlating or sharing, but please remember to credit. This is all I ask.
If you see any errors, please let me know.
Comments are always welcome.
Honey & Clover is licensed; please support Chika sensei by buying the manga.

Thank you very much and please enjoy!

In order to “train my stamina”, I even rode my bicycle specially to the west coast which is a little far! The journey just took me 36 minutes. A easy victory!^_^ But on my way back, I’ve gotten anemia that I ended up spending 2 and half hours instead….

Chapter 1

(p2)
[6 *(1) tatami mat room,/Kitchen 3 tatami mat,/ No bathroom.]
[Ten minutes walk to the university.]

Mayama: Oi---what‘s up?
Takemoto: Mayama senpa---i--, are you full right now? I have some *(2) Korokke.//Do you like to have some?
[built 25 years ago/Rent: 38 000 yen]

[sounds can be heard so clearly by everyone. /All residents are students.]
Guy: Eh? Korokke?! Can I have some as well?
Mayama: Korokke? Are there enough for me too?
Takemoto: Of course!/ There’s a lot, so everyone is wel--come.
[Facing east, the rising sun is dazzling.]

*{T.N(1)= In Japan, the size of a room is typically measured by the number of tatami mats .It’s a thick straw mat serving as floor covering in the Japanese house. That means the apartment they are living is really really small.}

*{T.N(2)= I use “korokke” as it is somewhat different dish from “croquette”. Korokke is a Japanese deep fried dish originally related to croquette. Korokke is often served with tonkatsu sauce and shredded cabbage. My favorite is white sauce filling, which is called “Cream Korokke”. Yummy.}

(p2)
[After I’ve gotten into an art university since arrived in Tokyo, I realized that the surrounding of the school is so isolated by many farmlands that it surprised me.
My meals I made are so awful that it surprised me.
The price that *Sentou has charged is so high that it surprised me.
The homework is so much that it surprised me.]

[but now, they have all become a part of my daily routine...]

*{T.N= Sentou is a Japanese public bath whereby you need to pay for usage. Apartments are relatively costly in Japan, so some are not acquired with a private bathroom. Sentou is different from “Onsen“(Hot Spring). Sentou is mainly for bathing purpose.}

Takemoto: Ah, wait a minute. Who has mayonnaise? I’ve just used up mine.
Mayama: Mayonnaise? Hey, Takemoto…/You still need mayonnaise when you eat Korokke?

[university student year 2; 19 years old.]

(SFX: Too much--!)

Mayama: Wow! That’s a little too much, isn’t it?// How come you have such a mountain of Korokke? (Here, your mayo.)

SFX: Snort---
Takemoto: That’s because…/Morita-senpai said, “For everyone to eat”…..
Mayama: Ah! Morita-senpai has returned!

(p3)
Mayama: It’s been a while…//Must be around 12 days already? I thought this time he’s dead somewhere in a place that no one would ever know…
SFX: Snort---
Takemoto: It’s 14 days. It’s about half a month.

Mayama: Ewk…But really, he’s too mysterious./He would disappear every time without a word, and nobody would know when the heck did he run off.//
(Morita: I’m back…)
(The bag: “ *Tiger Shop’s Youkan“)
After a while, he would just come back raggedly too.//
On the same time…//

*{T.N= Chika-sensei is playing with words here. Youkan is a sweet bean jelly made of red bean paste, agar and sugar. It is small and cubical in size. Youkan contains the kanji “lamb”. Originally, it was indeed a Chinese dish made from sheep‘s gelatin. It‘s great to eat around the summer because it‘s chilling. }

His butt’s pocket would always be filled with some mysterious cash notes…
SFX: Fully filled….
Mayama: …Why did I…feel that somehow, those money seem to have increased…?
Takemoto: Mayama-senpai…About Morita-senpai…//What kind of part-time job is he really d…doi...
Mayama: …I don’t know….

(p4)
Man 1: AWE---SOME!/(Can I join?)
I brought my *Otafuku(Fried noodle) sauce along!
Man 2: I want Korokke too! My earning only left with 70 yen. (I‘M SAVED!~)

*{T.N= Otafuku sauce is a popular manufacturer of sauces for dishes, such as Okonomiyaki and Yakisoba. “Otafuku” in Japanese means “moon-faced woman”, so that’s why you can see a plump-faced woman as the logo .}

But isn’t it too much?!// I believe there is about 10kg here?
SFX: Quite a fabulous Korokke party~
[seasonings from right to left; top to bottom: Salt, Tonkatsu(Fried pork cutlet) sauce, Mayonnaise , Otafuku sauce, light Soya sauce.]

Man 1: Ah, those’re from the downtown of MY CITY.// In addition, he bought them at the Mega Sale, 5 minute before the closing at 9pm.
Man 2: But, Morita-san… why the heck must it be Korokke---?//
Since he has that much money, WHY THE HECK IT HAS TO BE KOROKKE OUT OF ALL THINGS?
SFX: Snore----- Snore-----

Man 2: He can buy something better….much better…Something like meat, meat, MEAT~~~~~~~~//
Is he using that to provoke us, the needy ones on purpose?!--------- (WAH~~~~~~~~~)
Mayama: Don’t cry, Hasegawa. If not, you’re tricked by Morita-san.
Takemoto: But he has a heart, at least.// He bought Curry and Original; half for each flavor.
Man 1: …No. Most probably there were too many left-over, so he was forced to take them….

(p5)
Mayama: But,/ why is this guy not sleeping in his own room, huh?

Takemoto: Uh… Just a while ago….//
--------------------
Morita: Those are yours./ For everyone to eat.//
But under one condition…//
Wake me up at 8am to…mor…row….
SFX- (Morita drops onto the ground) // Takemoto: GYAAA-------
--------------------
Takemoto: He said he must get up on time for tomorrow’s morning lecture at 10am.

Ah…../ Don’t tell me….it’s that….

Man 2: When Morita-san was in Year 1, he missed one hour less for his attendance that he was unable to graduate. And so, he was forced to repeat his class for 2 years.
Mayama: That’s it!
Takemoto: OH NO~ Does that mean I hold a grave responsibility right now?! (NOOOOOOO-------)

I also remember that he overslept and repeated his class once again for the previous year.//
Which means… if he didn’t catch it this time, he’ll be an university student for the 7th year?!
(Classes for Year 1 are very early, so it’s hard to wake up.)
SFX- (Morita: Snore~~~~)// (Clocks: Ringgggggg…Ringggggg….)
(Even three alarm clocks cannot wake him up.)

(p6)
Mayama: It’s OK, it’s OK! / I heard it’s totally OK to study in an university for 8 years.
Takemoto: Can somebody lend me another clock? (NOOOOOOOO~~~~~~~)//
Ahhhhhhhhhhh! It’s already 9.30am!//
Wake up!! Morita-senpai, wake up----------//
Everyone please wake up----------------!!
SFX: Ringgggggggggg

Takemoto: AH! You’re awake!!

Morita: Yaaay! Thank you./ Since I’m awaken, please let me close my eyes for 5 more minutes.
SFX: speaks in a concise way// falls// Snorts
Takemoto: You’re sleep-talking, so stop acting like you’re clearly awake!!

(p7)
Mayama: U-h….
Takemoto: Mayama-senpai! I can’t wake Morita-senpai at all!

Mayama: After Morita-san returned from his part-time job, he need to sleep for 48 hours, at least, or he won’t wake up. / You better give up and go to school. Morita-san is going to be detained for sure.
(Morita’s face: Corpse)

Takemoto: Before he even get repeated, my university life is already transformed into a nightmare. All thanks to him!
(WAKE UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP, SENPAI~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~)
SFX: shaking, shaking

Mayama: You’ve been tricked by him for one whole year, huh?
----------------------
Morita: It suits you so well!!//1000 yen ple---ase!!
(*20 minutes before…..)
---------------------
Mayama: Alright then. Let us try, shall we?/
First, we use his most favorite coffee milk to give him high blood pressure!// This would activate his brain cells.

(p8)
Mayama: Next, we shall record the scenes which we’ve tried our best to awake him, all in front of the TV!
SFX: Flash

*{T.N= LOL at the Teletubbies….}

Mayama: In this way, we can relieve Morita-san’s curse by 30%! / Continue to wake him up for another 15 minutes!!
(Really, this is exactly like getting possessed by an angry ghost!!!)
(Takemoto: After all we’ve done…this only worth 30%?)

Mayama: If we still can’t wake him up, you shall go to school!// I’ll lend you my scooter!
Takemoto: Eeh?! The scooter that Morita-san made?!
----------------------------
Morita: HAP--PPY BIRTH--DAY, MAYAMA.// You want this, doncha?
Mayama: Senpai…Wha…What is this?
Morita: Scooter~~~ (Aww, can’t you see?)
Mayama: Don’t tell me…. That you’re using this bloody thing to replace the 10 000yen you’ve borrowed last month?! AH?!
Morita: HAHAHA (Yup.)
----------------------------

(p9)
Takemoto: He won’t get up, / no matter how hard we tried.//
SENPAI! IF YOU’RE DETAINED,// PLEASE DO NOT HATE ME!!

Morita: Detained?! // Detained NO MORE!!//CHE!!
Takemoto: GYAAA--------//
SENPAI?! (Daylight robbery---------?!)
(Morita’s face: Wind)

(p10)
SFX: “aaaaaaaaaaa------!”
Mayama: Huh?//
MORITA-SENPAI?! //Eh?! Whe…Where’s Takemoto?

Girl 2: AH?! Wait a sec!
Girl 1: (Pant, pant)//
WAIT! You made this scooter from our department’s trolley after it was broken. Right? RIGHT?!
SFX: Crowds approaching

Girls: FIX OR PAY?! (KYA-------)//
You better explain about this!
Mayama: (Pretends I see nothing…….)
SFX: moving quietly…

(p11)
Morita: I didn’t do it.
Girl1: Stop pretending! Well, then tell us who did it?!
SFX: Grips

Morita: Mayama did it.
SFX: One serious look
(Mayama: What the?!)

Girls: Not so fast, Mayama!!// You did it, doncha?!
SFX: Hurryingly walk away
Mayama: Ah----------- You grotbag!---------//
Dammit-------It’s been so long since I was tricked. Morita senpai--------!!
Shuji: Ah, it’s been a long time/ since I’ve heard Mayama’s whining.

(p12)
Mayama: I thought he has finally switched his target to Takemoto, which allows me to live peacefully for the previous year. (Sigh---)
Takemoto: WHAT?! I AM YOUR SCAPEGOAT?!
SFX: A big blow
Shuji: Hahaha. Mayama, you’ve been tricked by him long enough, huh--------/ Oh yah, Hagu. What’s a scooter? //
(Ahh…So that’s it? I got it…)
SFX: falls

Mayama: Sensei…Eh…// Who’s that tiny girl behind you……?//
Sensei’s daughter?
Shuji: Mayama-kun, do you like to get detained that much?//
She’s my cousin’s daughter. She’ll be a student here starting this year.
SFX: grabs

(p13)
SFX: pops out
Takemoto: Uh…I’m..//
Mayama: I’m Mayama Takumi. Architecture department, Year 4.//
Nice. To. Meet. You
SFX: Block!!
Shuji: Hanamoto Hagumi, 18 years old// My interests are making clothes and playing with clay.
SFX: Grabs
Mayama: Professor. Please don’t interrupt the youths making friends.

Shuji: By the way, Hagu’s father is the Section Chief of Nagano Prefecture’s Police Investigation, First Class. // He has doted upon his daughter for 18 years…// Do anything reckless and I will shun you to oblivion.

Mayama: Hooo….~

Takemoto: Ah…Uh…/ Well….//
Let’s share this together, shall we? (Completely didn’t listen at all)//
(Intended to treat this as lunch…)

(p14)
Shuji: Ah, I see--- Morita has a mysterious part-time job---- //
SFX: laugh
Ah…. Hagu. You’re still such a delicate person. (You look so much like your father when he’s young…..)//
Isn’t she cute?
(Hagu: very serious)
SFX: pours
(Kettle: Design History)

Hagu: Here.//

(Cup: Tea)
I shall have one then.

Mayama: (What a tiny hand…..)//
Hey, / Takemoto…

(p15)
[Ahh…//I see.// So this is….]

Shuji: Wow…Look, the sakura trees are blooming.// The weather is getting warm too, so it’s really comfortable.

[in the midst of warmth and serenity, comes tumbling with a trail of motion.
That’s right.
This is Spring.]

Mayama: (This is the first time…)// (that I’ve witnessed a moment of someone falling in love…)/ Oh, good grief.(Why am I feeling embarrassed..?)

(p16)
[Even my heart is thumping with a bumbling beat.]

Spring? / Yup, spring has arrived…

SFX: Opens swiftly
AH! MORITA-SENPAI!

Morita: Takemoto-kun,/ thank you for waking me up this morning. From now on, I can finally graduate.
SFX: pats
Mayama: Morita-san!//
Nice job for the incident just now, huh?----
Morita: Hahaha. Have you grew a little taller, Mayama?//
Hm?

(p17)
Morita: ………

Mayama: ……Morita--// -Senpai?
Morita: …………………………..
SFX: munch, munch

SFX: Dash-----
Mayama: AH! MORITA-SENPAI, YOU’RE THINKING OF FLEEING?!

(p18)
[The *(1) taro field behind the school]
[Duration: 4 minutes]

Morita: HOLD/ THIS//
UM!//
*(2) COLOBOCKLE!

SFX: Shocked!

*{T.N(1)= Taro is a widely cultivated tropical Asian plant having broad peltate leaves and a large starchy edible tuber. Also called “cocoyam“.}

*{T.N(2)= Colobockle (Koro-pok-guru) are tiny people originated from Japanese folktales, or more accurately, Ainu. Ainu is a group of ethnic people from Hokkaido. Colobockle are commonly portrayed as little fairies that carry a peltate leave. Meanwhile, there‘s also a famous Japanese illustrator called, “Colobockle“ and the art style is as cute as Hagu, and similar to Chika-sensei‘s. Well, if you still don‘t know what is Colobockle, just play “Okami“.}

(p19)
[Actually…
This is another form of “a moment of someone falling in love”.]

[it’s just that it’s too difficult to understand. (Refers to the picture below)]
SFX: Snap, snap, snap ,snap!
Morita: COLOBOCKLE!// COLOBOCKLE!
Hagu: …………. (SFX: shivers, shivers)

[so no one has even realized it!]

Mayama: …….
Takemoto: Senpai, Stop it! Are you that intended to make her cry?
SFX: HAHAHAHA…
Shuji: Hahaha… Colobockle? (Hagu is so adorable in anything~~~)

Aww. Thank you,Kyrie Eleison.
Yeah, I always tear up at certain scenes. For an manga-adapted anime, it was so well-done as it's very faithful to the manga, which is pretty rare.(This also shows that I am more of a manga whore than an anime slave.)
I think I'm going to cry again when translating.:tem

Take your time to decide since it's a tedious job to do typesettling for Honey and Clover.

I'll be really grateful and happy if you're willing to scanlate it.:tem

Hi kaya! :D I clicked due to Honey & Clover, surprised to see it's a familiar face... username.
Do you intend to translate the next chapters too? Some of it are already scanlated though (1-12 by Shoujomagic & 1-5 by La Flaga). I don't know if you know it already and just want to redo everything, but in case you'd rather pick up from where they left.

This series need greater love, and more love!!! Kaya did good!
Everyone should read this as part of their literature studies! Never underestimate a josei series. :kukuku
By the way, kaya, we used to talk about the anime here, so maybe you can check it out when you have time.

Don't know if someone else is scanlating it or not but I will only if it interests me :) . I've been wanting to watch the anime but didn't get the time to. Now that someone has translated the 1st chap of the manga I don't have to watch an whole 20 mins episode to check how good ( or bad :p ) it is and as mentioned before If I find it interesting I'll scanlate it. :)

I totally agree with you. Don't understand shoujo/josei. I usually find characterisation in them more believable and detailed too.

Thanks for the thread, Nami. I will give it a bump.:D

It's alright, because I work the same way. Although I read everything, I usually focus more on works that are rather underrated, provided that I love them too! I'm still not in the level or I have the time whereby I can translate whatever I read. I hope I can do it one day though.:tem

Though I am someone who always prefer manga to anime, Honey and Clover animes are top-notch. Afterall, the anime is the one which make the series famous.

Thanks for putting a thought to scanlate it nonetheless.:)
