Oookay. Just one more chapter in volume 7 and I'll get right on that.
We're not getting so some of the really awesome stuff that Part 3 of this manga is about. The mythology behind the series. It starts at the tail-end of this chapter.
[Doubutsu no Kuni 24 Translation by Kewl0210]
Title: Word.24 Kuou Note
T/N: This is a reference to Clear Note, the final villain of Konjiki no Gash!! whose goal was to destroy the demon race. Though it can also just mean "Kuou's Notebook".
Giller: What an interesting human and dog.
Just the two of you managed to defeat a chimera.
You're a bit different from the other animals, aren't you...?
I thought only boring humans were left...
but this is an interesting show.
Try again one more time.
"That" is a nuisance, but...
the flaw in these worms that appear when they're healing......
that much moreso than normal
Jyu: they're fragile!!!
Giller: He's got a good eye...
He found their weakness after just fighting one once.
He's not afraid even though a chimera is right in front of him.
Is it because he's unafraid that he can observe things calmly...?
Giller: It seems he likes "killing" quite a bit.
How did he jump all the way up there?
That isn't possible with human leg strength.
SFX: DOZUN VUBU
Chimera: I can't take it anymoooore!!!
Jyu: The show is over.
I'm going to kill you!
Giller: No, not yet.
Next, I need you to be a test subject.
Giller: Just two chimera is enough.
Eat each other.
Giller: These creatures called chimeras have a powerful regenerative ability.
That is because the power of their "stem cells " is excellent.
SFX: GABU GABU GABU (Chomping)
Giller: Stem cells are cells that one can chance into muscle, bone, nerves, organs, or any kind of cell.
And all animals have them.
The most interesting thing about chimeras
is that they can absorb the meat of animals other than chimeras
and their stem cells can change into cells similar to the ones they absorbed.
SFX: MORI MORI CHIN
Giller: This is gorilla meat that we killed just a little while earlier.
It's been soaking in a culture fluid with a similar composition to blood so it isn't dead yet.
Giller: Its form won't simply change into that of a gorilla.
It will change into a form combining the powers of a chimera with the powers of a gorilla.
SFX: MUCHA MUCHA MUCHA
You said... "Don't bring lies into this world", didn't you?
That's right... This animal is a lie created by distorting the natural world.
SFX: MEGI MEGI MEGI MEGI MEGI
Giller: With a form not decided by ugliness,
they take in every kind of beast and transform...
SFX: MEKI MEKI MEKI MEKI
Giller: A synthesized creature, a chimera.
SFX: CHIH CHIH
Jyu: The stabs aren't deep?!!
SFX: DON ZUO
He avoided it by the skin of his teeth...
Giller: He's doing quite well staving off death......
He really is a good subject
for testing the chimera's strength.
Jyu: Is that all?
Giller: That was quite good.
I got some good data...
Giller: Did you think that even if you couldn't kill the chimera, you could still kill me?
That's too bad.
You bastard... what's your name?
Giller: It's Giller.
Have a desire to know the name of the one that killed you, do you?
Jyu: The one that's going to be killed is you.
Giller, I, Jyu, will kill you.
Giller: On what basis can you say such a...
Saltpeter and sulfur?!
You did quite well, finding these, eh?
But this little of such a primitive gunpowder is....
I thought it would scare you a little more.
I really can't stand anything about you...
He had a rope connecting his body to that dog?!
Was that the trick he used to jump so high in the middle of the fight?
Giller: Chimera, follow them!!!
Jyu: By the way, this sack was full of oil.
I threw all the contents onto that thing.
SFX: MERA MERA MERA MERA MERA MERA MERA MERA MERA (Burning)
Giller: I see... The moment he thought he was no match for it, he threw oil on the chimera
in order to create a means for escape...
I suppose there are somewhat skilled ones out there...
SFX: POTA... POTA... POTA...
this is really as far as that skill goes.
All that those guys can obtain
is an insect-like level of power...
Giller: Power I am going to obtain...
is the power of God.
Chimera, don't panic.
That oil he sprinkled on you was only a small amount. It will disappear soon.
Let's head back
to the Tower of Babel.
I was able to have fun.
Jyu: How shall I kill him?
Rip him limb from limb?
Rip out his heart while he's still alive?
SFX: HUH HUH
Jyu: I can't wait......
Tarou: There we go.
SFX: PAN PAN
Jeek: This garden seems kind of special.
What sort of seeds did you plant?
Tarou: Yeah. This is an important crop that will connect all animals.
We only have a few seeds, so we need to make sure not to eat them until we get more seeds.
Jeek: So that's why it's enclosed and stuff, eh......?
Tarou: If possible, I'd like to have someone guarding it, though......
Monoko: I'll do it, Taro-chan-be.
Tarou: Hm? Are you sure, Mommy?
Monoko: These are really important seeds you've dreamed of, Taro-chan.
I'll keep a close eye on them.
Tarou: Thank you, Mommy.
Please try to.
Momouros: What?! There's really a bad guy like that out there?
Tarou: Yeah. And the animals that Giller guy controls, the chimeras, are strong......
It's possible they'll attack this place, too...
We need to come up with some kind of countermeasure......
Momouros: Will we still be in danger even if all of us cattle fight together.
Tarou: It will depend somewhat on the number of chimeras, but we'd probably all be killed.
Then our only choice is to run away, isn't it...?
Tarou: Yeah... I guess you're right, but...
we could surround the village by a river.
And make bridges that only we can cross and stuff...
And make paths that only kids can escape through...
Oiss: The adults want to get away, too, though...
Horse: Could we ask Capri to have adult lions fight for us?
Tarou: If we could, that would be a huge help, but...
Riemu: Right now...
Riemu: Giller will be working hard
on Kuou's notebook that I gave him so I'm sure he won't come here.
Tarou: Huh?! But didn't you say
that notebook was dangerous?
Riemu: It is dangerous,
but just having that won't become anything big.
if you know something, please tell us.
I still haven't got my feelings in order.
Riemu: It was just filled with so many mysterious things...
Riemu: Let me think about it a little more.
Momouros: Even though she was talking like that... There's something...
Well, if there are things we can do, let's do them.
There are children here. There's nothing more important then being cautious.
[And so, time passes...]
SFX: ZA AH
Someone: Amazing!! Do you think we can harvest them already?
It hasn't been even one season yet.
Oiss: It's been 40 days.
Oiss: I counted them with numbers.
It took 40 days after the seeds were planted until they could be harvested.
Riemu: He's right, Tarouza.
So there may even be enough now to eat
and still have enough seeds left over for Spring.
Riemu: And anyhow, that llama can use numbers, huh?
It's kind of irritating, somehow.
Tarou: It started coming down again, eh, Mommy?
Monoko: Oh, Taro-chan.
Tarou: Here, put this on.
Monoko: What are you talking about? That's the fur the elder left you when he died, isn't it, Taro-chan?
I have my own fur-be.
Anyhow, look at that.
Those Eternity Fruits sure are incredible.
They don't die even when snow falls.
The fruits keep getting bigger even under the snow.
Apparently "The root vegetable types and leafy vegetable types even grow in the winter"... amazing, huh?
I do nothing but look after crops eeeevery day, but...
Monoko: When I think about how these fruits will make Taro-chan's dreams come true
and I see them growing healthily, it makes me really happy.
Monoko: The dream of getting meat-eating animals and plant-eating animals to get along...
I know that Kuou person couldn't get them to get along even with these fruits, but...
I think that for the lions Capri lives with and Ena and her pack, maybe you can accomplish a little, don't you think?
If I... can make just the environment around you happier, Taro-chan,
then that's enough.
If you don't need to feel the pain of hearing screams of animals being eaten, Tarou-chan,
then that's enough.
Tarou: Thanks, Mommy.
Tarou: Call everyone.
I'll call Capri and her pack.
Tarou: Okay, everyone,
try eating these.
Animals: Incredible!! There are really plants and fruit that lions eat!!
Fruits like this really existed?!!
Tarou: I know that the same way Kuou failed,
just these fruits might not be enough to get meat-eating animals and plant-eating animals to get along, but...
But right now...
Tarou: Being able to see this sight even for an instant is...
Monoko: Yum, yum!
Tarou: Mommy, you're eating too much.
Your tummy's getting all big.
Monoko: Hm? Really?
I only just started eating-be.
Tarou: What is it, Riemu?
Why'd you call us out here?
Riemu: Yeah, I have something important to talk about.
Tarouza, do you remember a while back when I said that Giller and his group wouldn't come here?
Tarou: Yeah, of course.
Capri: Giller? Isn't that the bad human you told me about?
Tarou: I'm pretty sure you said "He's working hard on Kuou's notebook".
But "That notebook alone won't become anything big.".
Tarou: What did you mean by that?
Oh, and you also said something like "Mysterious things are written in it"...
Riemu: The truth is......
Riemu: Kuou had two notebooks.
Riemu: And this notebook
has important things relating to us written in it, too.
You two should be able to read it as well.
The last hope of the animals of this world...
the "miracle children" are indicated here.
Riemu: Year 1876, Jyu Free.
Year 2062, Riemu Vivre.
Year 1991, Momonoya Tarouza.
Year 2278, Capri Luce.
Year 4078, Giller Giller Giller.
