Ok, finally got this done. This is the last chapter of V4. I also went back and did the article at the end of 41 I forgot to do before. So all that's left is the omake, which I'll make an attempt at doing tomorrow. Then I'll FINALLY have another volume done.

Title: Chapter.42
Kyoto (3)

Page 159:
Shima: It hurts.
It hurts.
It's like a black swamp
It hurts.
Aaah, it hurts.
It really
seriously
gurgling, pulsating
in the pit of my stomach.
Aah
Aah
Goddammiiit.

Page 160:
Shima: I've got the feeling
I'm 'alive'.
SFX: KAHH
Someone: 5-7 Fu Promotion?! That's what he's going with?!
That's insane.
If his attack runs out, he'll be defending his ou from mate in no time!!
His own gyoku's already in shaky territory.
How long is this attack gonna last......?
6-7 Gin, it's 'brinkmate'.
7-8 Gin.
2-8 Hi, another 'brinkmate'.
SFX: PASHIH PASHIH
[I can't remember if we explained what brinkmate is, but I think we did. If not, put a note.]

Page 161:
Someone: Is Shimada gonna get all the way to mate with this?
But he's up against Souya!
Well... what if he makes it?!
Raidou: He won't.
7-1 Hi.
SFX: FUH
SFX: PACHIH...
Someone: He got out of it?!
With only the hisha and the fu?!
On top of that
it's Souya's turn now!!

Page 162:
Someone: Shimada 8-dan's attack ends here----
and Souya Meijin's counterattack began......
Rai: This match is over.
I'm going to the waiting room.
Shima: Yeah...
it's snow.
No matter how much I struggle,
it keeps piling up relentlessly.
A darkness so bright it's dazzling.

Page 163:
Someone: A quiet, overwhelming,
mesmerisizng
beauty.
------Umm...
Wait.
Please, wait.

Page 164:
Rei: It's
not over yet.
Rai: Huh?
His Yagura has been stripped away and his gyoku is in unstable position.
And on top of that, his opponent is 'Souya'.
There's no way for him to overturn this.
Rei: But it still
isn't over. Shimada-san's pieces are still alive.
Rai: It's over. Shimada's done for.
And on top of everything, there's an 'overwhelmingly large difference'.
In the 4th rank, he's far too lacking in power.
You're part of Shimada's study group, aren't you?
I can understand if you don't want to admit how bad your senpai's situation is,
but that will in fact only make him look worse.
Be quiet.

Page 165:
People: No.
Shimada 8-dan fought hard.
Yeah.
But...
the guy he's up against...
SFX: ZAWA... ZAWA... (talking)
Guys: Who could blame him?
He's up against a bad opponent.
I mean, this is Souya we're talking about.
The 4th file, huh?
Yeah, still
it'd be nice if he could get 1 win...
I was hoping he'd show us more fight.
This never got all that exciting.
Rei: No...
No, that's not right.
I don't think this board is dead yet.
I don't think that
Shimada-san's pieces
are dead.
Guys: I guess this was to be expected...
Yamagata was a far-off dream...
Well, that's how it goes......

Page 166:
Rei: To me, it looks...
-----it looks
it looks like...
SFX: PASHI...
Guy: Kiriyama 5-dan.
Kiri...
Where are you going,
Kiriyama 5-dan?!

Page 167:
Rei: Shimada-san!
Shimada-san!
Shimada-san!
Shimada-san...!!
Fujimoto Kiryuu

Page 168:
Rei: Shimada...
san...
Rai: ----Shimada 8-dan resigned.
I told you, there was a big difference.
A huge one.

Page 169:
SFX: PAH ZAH BACHI BACHI
SFX: KAHH
SFX: SUH...

Page 170:
SFX: PACHI...
Soya: ----I suppose you didn't notice...
Guys: Hey,
wait.
...This...
This 7-9 Kaku...
doesn't that turn thing around?
Even the 2-4 Kei brinkmate's gone...
Someone: This darkness doesn't just loop.
Someone: ...Huh?
Isn't Souya Meijin's Ou mated?
In just
that one
move.

Page 171:
Shima: ...The world
looks utterly different.
Someone: You
had too much faith in me.
Shima: The flash of light
I was sure I caught a glimpse of while in the jaws of death
that was my means of survival.

Page 172:
Souya: .........
Too bad. It would've been beautiful.........
Rei: ----And so,
the curtain closed on the Shishi-Ou Championship with Shimada-san losing 4 games in a row...

Page 173:
Rei: ----And
Shimada-san and I left Kyoto that night.
Rei: Shimada-san.
I bought you some water and some light snacks.
Black Bar: That's right.
Rei: In that utterly exhausted profile
I saw the great distance he had walked.
Black Bar: ----He knew from the beginning.

Page 174:
Black Bars: What is 'beyond the storm'
Rei: He was in a world where matter how many times he fell down,
he would pick up the broken pieces of himself
and keep standing up again and moving forward.
Wandering endlessly.
Black Bars: It's simply
Rei: 'Then why?!' ----- That was a question
I absolutely
could not ask that profile.
Black Bar: an even more furious storm.

Page 175:
Rei: ----The answer
was something he could only
ask himself
within that storm.

[Make sure you have all the white-shogi-piece symbols and black-shogi-piece symbols in the places they're written. So in the diagram and before the moves. I'll write [White icon] or [Black Icon] in each spot so make sure you replace them with the actual ASCII symbol or just copy it in photoshop.]
Top Right Small: An article by Senzaki Manabu
Top Right Big: Senzaki Manabu's Lion Shogi Column
Big Right: 'You Had Too Much Faith in Me', the Numbing Other Side of a Single Move...
Article: The peak of the match between Souya Meijin and Shimada 8-dan. The 4th game of the Shishi-Ou Championship. At the end of the game, there was a spectacular move, a kaku drop, which Shimada 8-dan did not notice but Kiriyama-kun and the opposing player, Souya Meijin, saw. 'You had too much faith in me.' Whew. Really gives you chills, doesn't it? That line? It's okay, go ahead and say it once. But it seems like something that if you try to say it in the moment, you'll get nervous and your voice would crack.
Diagram (Right): [Black Icon] Sente - Souya Pieces In-Hand, Gin, Kei, 3 Fu
Diagram (Left): [White Icon] Koute - Shimada Pieces in Hand Kaku, Fu
Article: Now then, the board shown above was the game board at that point in the match. Here, a drop of [White Icon] 7-9 Kaku would have been a spectacular move for gote, Shimada 8-dan. Now, for the sake of those that may ask 'What is [White Icon] 7-9 Kaku?', I'll give a little explanation. This is a kind of code, a notation which indicates how the pieces move. The [White icon] indicates it's gote's move. 7-9 means the 7th square on the board from the right and the 9th square from the top. This notation can be used like coordinates to express every square on the board.
On this board, one can use the word 'mated' with the kaku drop, but this does not mean that the gyoku is checkmated, it means this shogi game is checkmated. In other words, with this one move, it seems to be gote's victory---- is what it means.
The drop of this kaku is veeery complicated. Please think about it a little before reading on.
First, Shimada 8-dan's gyoku will lose next with a [Black Icon] 2-1 Kaku Promote. There are two ways of defending against that.
A [White Icon] 3-1 Gin, taking the kin. [Bold.]
B [White Icon] 3-2 Kin, taking the kaku. [Bold.]
That is all.
But A has the move of [Black Icon] 2-4 Kei, so he really is mated then. And with regards to B, with the move of [Black Icon] Gin No Promotion, the gote's gyoku is in brinkmate (a hopeless situation). There, even with a [White Icon] 7-9 Kaku drop there, with a [White Icon] 9-8 Gyoku, sente's Ou won't be mated.
So let's set A and B aside for now and move to [White Icon] 7-9 Kaku (Spectacular Move). From here, sente has 2 paths to take.
C [Black Icon] Take with Same Ou.
D [Black Icon] Run away with 9-8 Ou.
Those two moves. And against C, [White Icon] 6-8 Hi Promotion [Black Icon] 8-8 Ou, then [White Icon] 3-2 Kin and we end up in the B situation mentioned earlier. When sente does [Black icon] Same Gin No Promotion, next will be [White Icon] 7-8 Kin, [Black Icon] Same Hi Promotion [White Icon] 7-9 Kaku which is checkmate, making it gote's victory.
Then with D, [Black Icon] 9-8 Ou, we now go to A' [White Icon] 3-1 Gin. Earlier, gote was mated with [Black Icon] 2-4 Kei, but but with the kaku dropped, gote has an attack on 2-4. It can take. Therefore this also results in gote's win.
......Did you understand all that? Huh? You didn't? Well, it is a brilliant move that the even some of the most prominent shogi players missed, after all.....
