「あとがき　－あり書店の話―」

気がついた時、私はその書店の中にいる。だだっ広い店内は真っ白い書架がうらり並んでいる。どれも天井まで届くほど巨大だが、通路がゆったりとしているおかげか圧迫感はない。足を止めて手近な書棚を覗けば、そこには私がまだ呼んだことのない本がみっしりと詰まっている。読めば豊かな時間を過ごせることを予感させてくれるタイトルばかりだ。しばらく書棚の間を歩くうちに、いつしか私は両手に山ほどの本を抱え込んでいる。世にこれほど幸せな重みはないだろう。既にお気づきだろうが、私は存在しない書店の話をしている。夢の中で遭遇する書店の話をしているのである。この話をすると、漫画原作仲間の有里紅良さんには「ずるい！　私も連れてけ！」と文句を言われるのだが、こればっかりはしょうがない。さて、書店好きには至福の境地とも言うべきこの夢だが、一つ多きな問題がある。それは手に取ったはずの本を一冊として読めた事がないということだ。レジで会計した記憶がないのだから仕方がない。こっちに持ち帰れてないのだろう。そこである時、私はついに夢の中での「立ち読み」を決行した。

[Afterword - The Story of a Certain Book Store-]

When I came to, I was in that bookstore. The spacious store was filled with pure white shelves. All the shelves stretched as high as the roof but the fact that it didn't feel overbearing might have been due to the wide aisles. When I stopped and looked, the shelves were filled with books I've never read before. It was filled with titles that gave me the feeling that time spent reading them would be time well spent. After walking through the aisles, I found myself carrying a mountain of books. Is there any other weight in the world that can make me feel happier than the weight of these books? I'm sure you've already noticed, but the store I mentioned is not real. I've been talking about a bookstore from within my dreams. Whenever I talk about it, my fellow manga author, Arisato Akara, would always say "Hey, that's not fair. Take me with you." but there's nothing I can do about that. Now, this store should be called a haven for people that like bookstores but, there's one big problem. And it's the fact that I've yet to read any of those books. I have no memory of paying for them at the register so it can't be helped. They probably can't be brought to this side. That's when I decided to try to [read it at the store.]

ターゲットはその書店の洋書コーナーで見かけた、一抱えもある大きな黒い本だ。分厚く硬い表紙から中のページまでとにかく真っ黒で、そこに極彩色の美しい挿絵が入っている。ジャンルはおそらく幻想文学だろう。少部数しか作られていない豪華な限定版のおもむきだ。さて、ページを開いた瞬間、面白いことが私の身に起きた。私はその本のページの中に吸い込まれ、そこに書かれている物語の中に投げ出されたのである。要するに夢の中で夢を見たのだ。入れ子構造の夢だ。しかもその夢の中で、「これは本の中に入ってしまったから夢だぞ」と私は目覚めしてる。つまり、夢の中の明晰夢というわけだ。そして私はこの世に存在しない物語を夢の中で体験してこちら側に帰ってきた。ミヒャエル・エンでの「はてしない物語」を地で行くかのよに。私が知った夢の中の物語とやらをここに書き記しても仕方がないのでそれはしない。だいたい、目覚めてから内容をメモに起こしてみたものの、支離滅裂なイメージの断片しｈかそこにはなかったのである。だが、その断片のいくつかは、この「牙の旅商人」をスタートさせる重要な＜鍵＞となったと言ったら…
あなたは信じてくれるだろうか？これから登場する、とある「書物」はその一つなのである。

My target was a large black book I found in the western books section of the store. The book was pitch black, from the thick hard cover to the pages inside, but had a richly colored illustration. It's genre was probably illusionary literature. It looked like a luxurious limited edition of which only a few were made. Then, when I opened the book, something amazing happened to my body. I was sucked into the book and thrown into the story. In other words, it was like a dream within a dream. And I would wake up as I think, "this is a dream because I've entered the book." In other words, this was a lucid dream. I experienced a story that doesn't exist, in my dreams, and came back. It was like a real life version of Michael Ende's book The Neverending Story. It would have been pointless to write the story I dreamed of here, so I didn't. Besides, when I tried to write down the story after waking up, all I got were incoherent fragments. But, what if I said that those fragments were important <keys> that started this, [Kiba no Tabishounin]...would you believe me? A certain [book] that is about to appear, is one of those.
