I'm still learning as well so these are just suggestions but...

まるで従うために逆らってるみたい
In order to abide by the rules, it seems he'd break the rules. [lit: disobey]
This is what I translated that as originally, when I first read the chapter. I don't know how close or right it is but that's what I got. Thought I'd at least suggest it?

[この娘ももう我が輩の保護など必要無い]
Instead of "daughter" how about "girl"? "Musume" can also mean "young, unmarried woman", apparently.

Hope this helps and I'm sorry I couldn't help anymore. I got stuck on some of the same lines you did. /o\

oh!~ Thanks so much! Yes those two suggestions make more sense to me... and I wasn't sure if musume could also mean just "girl" or not- I was thinking he could have used "ano ko" like "this child" as I think he usually does- so I was so so confused! XD

Haha- stuck on the same lines? d'oh. Matsuei-sensei always words some things very difficultly- it's hard to make up a translation that stays true to the japanese but also makes sense in english.

Thank you again :D I appreciate the help, no matter how small <3

Thanks so much Elkin!! Yeahhhhh I made a transliteration mistake on "strong" LOL that's what I get for doing that late at night...haha - thanks for the corrections and also the suggestions (like line breaks in bubbles...that makes sense- from now on I'll break up the bubbles in Word so it'll help me a little) and wow I'm actually improving? That's good to know... sometimes I feel like I'm not making any progress LOL- I can't wait to get back into japanese class in the fall. Especially for grammar purposes! :(

also how is this for page 19? It's still not in the order you're looking for but it's about as much MORE sense as I could pull out of it. Let me know what you think. XD

The problem I have with that translation is that it doesn't quite fit the grammatical structure. Going by your translation, the Japanese equivalent should be something like:

私を,人間を受け取った大事なことは,その怪物が地上に残したものだ。

I'm not 100% sure about the structure, but it should be fairly close. In this case どう変わっていくのか would be a separate sentence. However, we have

大事なのは, 受け取った私が, 人間が, その怪物が地上に残したもの, どう変わっていくのか

If we disaggregate it, we have:

大事なのは:
1. 受け取った私がどう変わっていくのか
2. 人間がどう変わっていくのか
3. その怪物が地上に残したもの, どう変わっていくのか

From which you'll get my translation. I'd break it down more and explain it, except I don't know all those grammatical terms like particles and copulas >.>

most important thing:
1. acknowledge how will I change?
2. How will humanity change?
3. that monster who left the upper world to us, how will he change?

Ah haaaa. (I think? haha) I guess the main confusing thing is the word "recieved" in the second line.. so. it's more like:

This is the most important thing

I must acknowledge

Humans

and that monster who left the world above to us

How will we all change?

Evolve...

FFFFffff- ... do I get a cookie this time? XD Or is it back to the drawing board LOL

#7. by Elkin ()

Almost almost :D

Quote:

大事なのは:
This is the most important thing

I'd tag an 'is' on the end if that. Personally, I translate this as 'Most importantly', because it flows better in English.

Quote:

受け取った私がどう変わっていくのか
I must acknowledge

Here 受け取った acts as a sort of adjective for 私, i.e. 'I, who have been acknowledged/have received'. It's just like in one of the earlier lines:

Quote:
[会話が切れた時には]
[Our conversation was broken]

You would interpret it as 'the time when our conversation was interrupted', rather than 'when time interrupted our conversation'.

Hence I was having trouble deciphering exactly what Yako means when she says '受け取った'. What exactly is she referring to?
#8. by Maluna ()
Posted on Apr 16, 2009
Hmmm... どうかなあッ~

maybe if we arranged the first two lines together-- like so:

私が大事なのは受け取った
The important thing is that I received

followed by:

Humans received

an upper world without that monster
(that monster left behind the upper world ) <-- I'm speculating here that Yako is referring to Sicks as monster...because she would call Neuro demon or by name?

then the last two lines are just

How will we change?

Evolve...

ow my brain.
#9. by Elkin ()
Posted on Apr 16, 2009
Hmm I dunno, that translation still doesn't seem right to me.

Quote:
私が大事なのは受け取った
The important thing is that I received

Firstly, once you rearrange it this way, the translation becomes: 'I have received the important things'.

Secondly, the remainder of the sentence would become 'the things humans and that monster left behind in the world above', which doesn't make sense. Humans haven't gone anywhere at all >.> In order to get what you said, we would need to tag '人間が' at the beginning of the sentence as well. If the mangaka really did mean what you said, then he'd have arranged the text very differently.

Quote:
その怪物が地上に残したもの, どう変わっていくのか
an upper world without that monster
(that monster left behind the upper world ) <-- I'm speculating here that Yako is referring to Sicks as monster...because she would call Neuro demon or by name?

Sorry for not pointing this out earlier, but this bit is very definitely referring to 'the things left behind by that monster'. 'An upper world without that monster' would be 'その怪物が無いの地上'.
