Page 119 - Overconfidence and Publicity
white: Ripping his mask off, the boy shows his fangs...
1(2b): ...you drew "Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu" alone, didn't you? If you can draw
that much alone,
2(2b): No. I also consulted the opinions of four people I determined as
talented from the net for that work. For example, the idea about the gym
uniforms and how only five people would receive food each day came from them.
3: Those were both parts I thought to be outstanding and interesting.

38)
1: Personally, I thought it was interesting too, but that means you didn't
think it up yourself...
2: No matter whose ideas they were, I'm the one collecting them together into a
work, so it belongs to me.
3(2b): There were other ideas that were more extreme and interesting. Like how
a guy who didn't want to die as a virgin...would force a girl into the
classroom bathroom...
4: Obviously I turned that one down because I knew it wouldn't fly in a shonen
magazine, but it looks like the content that remained was still pushing it.
5: ...I can understand four people, but if this work was created from the
opinions of a whole fifty people, then it isn't your work at all anymore,
Nanamine-kun.
6: But the fact that you have to listen to what an editor says means you can
never create something solely on your own, doesn't it?
7(2b): Besides, if your editor really is just an average salaryman, then it'd
be in his best interest to ask the opinions of as many people as possible. I
went a step further, though, and asked for the opinions of 50 people who truly
understood manga, out of the thousands who commented on how "Shinjitsu no
Kyoushitsu" was interesting.
8: If you think about it normally, wouldn't you agree that this way would
create a better manga?

39)
1(3b): I thought your manga had points about it that varied from the norm in a
good way, but to hear that your actual creation process was that abnormal...it
won't do you any good to continue like this.
2(2b): That's a shame--I was convinced that you would approve, Ashirogi-
sensei...I believed you to be an author capable of doing anything to create a
good manga, who possessed more revolutionary ideas than any other.
3: It's more of a shame for us...to think that a talented young Ashirogi Muto
fan would choose this kind of path...
4: Yeah. If you really want to become a pro, then you'd better change your
ways. Haven't you any pride?
5: What's pride?

40)
1: If you're talking about pride as a professional, then I think you're
mistaken.
2(2b): A pro is someone who works to make a work that can sell more, become
more popular, no matter what, isn't he? If someone have some sort of pride that
gets in the way of that, then it sounds to me like THEY'RE the ones who have
yet to go pro.
3(2b): "Tanto" is a good example, isn't it? That's what you got from getting
danced around by your supervisor, isn't it? It's what resulted from following
the rule that "manga is something created with a supervising editor," some
random guideline the publishing side made up.
4(2b): People are truly talented do their own marketing and producing, without
being controlled. If you ask me, the ones relying on their editors are just
amateurs with no self-confidence.
5: ...you shouldn't underestimate pros.

41)
1: You're overconfident..
2: If you want to draw in a magazine like "Jump," then you must have some
degree of trust in your editor.
3: I thought you two were authors who were actually cutting open your own path.
4: But it looks like you're just at the mercy of your editor after all...
5: Go ahead, try it! Do it the way you believe in, with the 50 people you
trust!
6: But someday, you're gonna screw up! That's what a true amateur work
is...because those fifty people you trust are all amateurs!
7: Sorry I'm laaaate!
8: Kaya-chan...

42)
1(2b): I-I'm Kaya, the wife of Takagi Akito, the one in charge of the story for
Ashirogi Muto!
2: Nice to meet you!
3: ...nice to meet you.
4(2b): I'm really happy to see an amateur like you who's such a big fan of
Ashirogi Muto. I'm gonna try my luck in the kitchen today, so please stay and
eat.
5: I'm sorry...but unfortunately I have to be going...
6: Ehhh? But I just brought home fresh ingredients, don't say that!
7: Kaya-chan. He said he's leaving, so please don't try and stop him.
8: Well then, I can't wait to see whose work is the more popular one when mine
gets published!
9: Eh?

43)
1: 50 people?
2: Don't tell anyone.
3: Anyone? O-oh, you mean Ashi-san and Hattori-san.
4: Other than them! I mean ANYONE!
5: OK...
6(2b): Since he was our fan, I felt like we had sort of taught him things, but
that was too naive...if it was me, I wouldn't have told anyone...I didn't even
want to hear about it.
7: ...if someone finds out, it'll just create another problem.
8: With 50 people on the net, who knows where it could leak from?
9: Yeah, it could happen. But the point is, we won't be the ones who do it.
10: But it sounds like he could make a really great manga doing it that way!
11: This isn't about problem of good or bad! Like Saikou said, he's not a pro!

44)
1: He said that the oneshot he created with 50 people is going to be published
soon, so I really want to see it.
2: Ehh?! It's gonna be in the next one?
3: I hope it doesn't get above "PCP"...
4: He may have been given ideas, but it's true that Nanamine-kun has talent.
5: If it's a oneshot, then he may get a center color with extra pages, and if
it's anything like "Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu," then it will rank in above.
6: You're going to accept that so honestly?
7: It's just a calm analysis.
8: The more important thing is not to lose to him if Nanamine-kun starts a
serialization.
9(2b): Yeah. With that way of doing things, though, it seems like he'd only be
lucky in the beginning, if anything.
10(2b): I hope you're right. But in this world, "you never know until you
try"...

45)
1(2b): If it's Nanamine-kun...or Nanamine-kun's "group"...as long as he gets
votes for his oneshot, he'll probably be able to send in a serialization
manuscript soon...
2: Yeah, there will probably be a serialization meeting held right after his
oneshot.
3: You should bring out that other serialization you were thinking about and
compete with him then!
4-6: shah
7: If this had happened a little earlier, when we were more fervent, we may
have thought about that, but there's reason or need for us to compete with him.
It'll be more reliable if we take things slowly.
8: Wow, you're really calm...
9: What was it, a "variant" battle manga? You still haven't started it?
10: No, we're going to go above a "variant" battle...to what Saikou suggested...
11: a "variant" "proper" battle manga!
12: Ehh?! What is that? (Who)?
13(2b): How is that different from a "variant" battle manga? And aren't you
just making things more confusing?
14: ...yeah...

46)
1: July 6
2: Where's Kosugi?
2: Down in a meeting with Nanamine-kun.
3: Oh...guess we can't, then.
4: Can't what?
5: We still don't have a good piece for the merged issue that goes on sale Aug
10...I was wondering if we could use what Nanamine-kun brought before in it...
6: There's no way...for that issue, he'd have to turn in the manuscript this
month.
7: But since he's in a meeting, now is good timing. I'll go ask him.
8: Aida-san calls people when he knows they're in meetings...wow.
9: vibrate
10: Ahhh, my phone. I'm sorry!
11: vibrate
12: No, I know how busy editors can be, you don't need to worry.

47)
1(2b): Eh? Nanamine-kun's "Kinchou to Sore ni Tomonau Kitai"...? (*Stress and
the Gas That Accompanies It) I'm talking with him, but I don't think that's
possible...
2: ...could you finish this oneshot this month?
3: You mean you'll put it in if I can finish it this month?! OK!
4: But you need to fix the pages, there's no way.
5(2b): It's alright, I'll make sure I finish in time! I have many friends who
help me with the manuscripts, so I should be able to do 45 pages in two weeks!
6: ...friends? ...two weeks? ...
7: Yes! Please let me do it!
8: OK, then we can think about it once you handle the corrections we just
talked about.
9(3b): I'll fix them in a day! (1) Make the main character stand out more! Make
the art have a more favorable impression! Change the vulgar expressions! Right?
10: I'll see you tomorrow, then! Thank you very much!

48)
1: 34 out of 50...they're all free...that should be enough.
2(2b): klak
3: klak
4: Now then, let's begin our meeting...
5: He told me to change how the character stands out, the deformed pictures,
and the vulgar expressions.
6-7: klak
nobuo: Again with the character standing out?! Is that editor an idiot? This
isn't that kind of manga, how many times do we have to tell him?! That's
probably the first thing he could think of to say, what a retard.
kenchan: He's got no talent. Doesn't he understand that it's better for the
pictures to look more realistic...? He should die.
haru: What's vulgar? The farts and poop? Poop is poop, isn't it? How else would
you say it?
taka: More importantly, this is just my idea, but, wouldn't it be better if we
reversed the roles of the hero and heroine?
SUGI: Ohhhh! I get it! You're a genius, taka!
8: True!
9: Let's ignore the editor and think amongst ourselves.
10(2b): klak klak
11: klak
12: I have to fix this by tomorrow, so everyone please keep talking with focus
on the serialization.
13: klak

49)
1: The next day
2: ...th...this is completely different from what I told you to do...
3: But it's better, isn't it?! Read it closely and make a calm decision.
4-5: flip
6: If you can't decide, then show a higher-up. I think this should go through.
7: If it doesn't, then I'll give up trying for the merged issue.
8: Alright...I'll have them look at this...
9: Thank you very much.
10: I knew you'd understand, Kosugi-san. I'm truly fortunate to have such an
able editor at my side.

50)
1: So this is how he fixed it...this is freakin' awesome...
2: It's amazing...
3: At first glance, it looks like nothing but a gag manga, but since the minds
of the characters are expressed so deeply, it makes you read it like a serious
story.
4: You're so lucky, Kosugi. It's your first year...no, still your first two
months, and you already get to publish a oneshot like this!
5: ...I don't feel like I'm making this myself, though.
6: Well it's only natural to feel that after just getting assigned to someone
and having everything continue so smoothly like this!
7: OK, we'll go with this! I'm sure the higher-ups will OK it!
8: Will he really be able to draw this in time?
9: Yes, he said he can in two weeks.
10: 2 weeks?! Seriously...? He's a genius...
11: But
12: Personally, I don't really like this work...

51)
1: Why not? It's so interesting...
2(4b): Yeah...it is interesting...so much that I can't believe an 18-year-old
drew it...it's clever, but lacks a sort of youth, you know, like it's different
from what a novice would draw...
3(2b): Yeah! It isn't something a novice would draw. It seems too
confident...he said that he even has a general idea for a serialization for
when this work gets voted on.
4: Wooow!
5: But Kosugi...if you get a serialization decided on in August of your first
year, you're gonna be a monster too.
6: Eh...really?
7: Usually first-years spend all their time doing menial tasks and learning the
job...
8: Nanamine Tooru...if he gets a serialization, Shizuka-kun will be really be
hurt.
9: Hiramaru-un and Aoki-sensei are also in trouble...they're both aiming for
the August serialization meeting. I'm sure they'll be in it as well, with how
intense about it they seemed.
10: ...if Aoki-san's "Kami-sama ga Kureta..." (God Gave it To Me) doesn't get
serialization, I'll be the one who suffers most...
11: There's a lot of romance in that manuscript, too.
12: This is bad...I need to meet with Aoki-san more...
13: Mmm, I also need to have a strategy meeting with Hiramaru-kun...lately his
negative gags have lost their bite.

52)
1: Two weeks later, July 20
2: Aida-san, Nanamine-kun's manuscript is done, can you look at it?
3: Ohhh, really, in two weeks?
4: The pictures aren't even messy, they're even better than what was in
"Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu!"
5: A...amazing...
6: And there's even more detail than "Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu"...how could an
amateur do this in two weeks...
7: It seems...like he had friends to help him.
8: Friends?
9: ?...still, he must have a good number of extremely skilled friends to do
this in two weeks...

53)
1(2b): Anyway, this threat of a newbie will probably also be submitting a
manuscript to the serialization meeting as well. And his main character is
afraid of love, just like yours.
2: Thaaaat is a problem! I told Yuritan that "I'll be sure to serialize it, ha
ha ha," you know.
3: Yuritan? Ahhh, Aoki-sensei...?
4: Yes, we call each other "Yuritan" and "Hiramaru-san."
5: ...I got up my courage and called her "Yuritan," but I wonder why Yuritan
called me "Hiramaru-san?"
6: Who cares?!
7(2b): Hiramaru-kun, trust your love advisor, Yoshida Kouji, and answer me
honestly. How much have you progressed since we last talked?
8: How much? I went out for tea once afterwards...
9: O...oh! Just tea?!
10: Wh...what?! Why do you look so happy...

54)
1: This is bad. This is a really bad situation! Now that I think about it, when
you confessed, Aoki-sensei said
2: Please meet me again like you have today.
3: And when you call her "Yuritan," she calls you "Hiramaru-san"...
4: In other words, Aoki-sensei thinks of "Hiramaru-san" as nothing more than a
friend for tea!
5: B...but...
6: And if you don't nail a serialization here, then even your position as a tea
friend will...
7: N...no, it can't be! Why?!
8(2b): She said she doesn't like people who don't work distinctly. If you don't
work, you'll be thrown away...that's how the creature known as women are...
9: No...please, noooooo!
10: Huh?
11: Yoshida-shi! All of a sudden I'm getting an abundance of negative ideas...
12: Yes, now, Hiramaru!
13: Draw the entire manuscript at once!
14: I see...so that's how it is...I had a feeling that things were going too
well...
15: ...I'll have to continue for a while with this pattern...

55)
1: August 3rd
text: The author of "Shinjitsu no Kyoushitsu" has a debut in next week's
"Jump!"
2: Wow. I thought it might end up like this, but...
3: That's some amazing publicity result.
4: This will also mean he's raising his own hurdle.
5: Yeah. But Nanamine-kun is confident that this is comparable to "Shinjitsu no
Kyoushitsu."
6: klak
7(2b): klak klak
white: An army of 50 faceless people!! Spine-chilling footsteps creep up to the
duo!!
8(2b): He sows the seeds, grabs the attention of the people, and then shows
then his next work, which blows away their expectations! If he works together
with those 50 people from the net, then it isn't an impossible task...no...
9: It might even be possible for him to begin a serialization in half a year
from his first manuscript...
