Asklepios Ch 5
-> RTS Page for Asklepios 5
Sorry for the late translation guys! To answer some PMs and emails I've been getting, yes I'll be trying to translate the chapters on a weekly basis. Sometimes real life just catches up on me though... So sorry for the delay ^ ^
I think chapter 4 hasn't been translated yet, but I was having trouble d/ling the raw (what with my shared IP address) so I'll have to keep trying. Once I have the raw, I'll get down to translating! So... it might not be of much use but... here's chapter 5 first:
------------------------------------------------------------
Page 01
Chapter 5 -- I want to test it
Text: Gather up your courage and take a big jump!!
Page 02
[1] Text: Could...this guy be
the real "masked man"...?!!
(Side text: The "mystery" attacks!!)
[4] Mask: You're a young one
It's nice to meet you, new "Asklepios"
[T/L note: Kanji for Asklepios = God of medicine]
[5] Rosary: Hey!!!
Page 03
[1] Rosary: Postale!!
[2] Rosary: Oh yeah!!
[3] Rosary: I forgot, you haven't met him yet right sir?
[4] Rosary: Don't worry!! This is on our side
It's our sponsor!!
[6] Postale: I'm Postale
For reasons I won't go into, I have dealings with the Medills
[7] Postale: I didn't want to face anyone but the heads of the Medills and Telesfos
so I had to do things this way...
Rosary: Even so, you went too far!! (Well not that I care about this guy...)
Page 04
[1] Buzz: U- umm
When you say "dealings with the Medills"... Does that mean
[2] Buzz: Y- you know my father?
But I've never seen you before...
Postale: ...Of course
[3] Postale: I know both Thug Medill and Dominique Telesfos very well
I simply met them in a way that you wouldn't notice me
But I myself have known you for years...
[4] SFX *sizzle*
[5] Rosary: Po- Postale provides us financial support for travels and information about patients and such!!
I know he looks dodgy but he's definitely our ally!!
[6] Buzz: He was seeing my dad without me knowing...?
But I was always with them...
[7] Postale: Thug never said much
Now that the Medills have a new head
There're a number of things I must tell you...
Page 05
[2] Postale: Such as what the Medills are trying to accomplish
And
about the Biblos...
[3] Postale: But... I have yet to judge your skills
I want to test the ability of the new "Asklepios"...
[4] Postale: I'll be at the city, Vigor, at the foot of this mountain
I want you to save a boy named "Ian"
Once that's done, I'll tell you more....
[5] Box: Vigor City
Page 06
[1] Guard: Hey... Are you sure
that the Asklepios'd be coming to this hospital in the next few days?
[2] Guard: Yeah... A few days ago a strange man appeared in front of one of the patients here
Postale: The Asklepios shall cure you...
Guard: and said the Asklepios would be dropping by
[3] Guard: He's been reported to've been sighted in a village over the ridge
It's worth keeping guard here...
[4] Lady: Thank you for your work, gentlemen
[5] Guard: ...Yeah
It's worth it
Page 07
[1] Ian: Oh, Dr Laura
[2] Laura: How're you feeling Ian?
[3] Ian: Dr Laura...
Soon... The Asklepios man's gonna come
and remove this lump for me right...?
[5] Laura: No... I'll be the one that cures you
Tomorrow we'll be performing the seton stitch on you
Be prepared for it
Page 08
[1] Guard: It's unusual to have such a young doctor... and a woman at that
Laura Roman... They say she's a genius; She studied at a medical school at Salerno, the most medically advanced town, and topped her class
She has a great reputation for her logic-based procedures, and I've heard she's got the full trust of the people here...
[2] Guard 1: She doesn't smile at all, but she's sure good-looking
If the Asklepios gets me, I want her to fix me up
Guard 2: The captain'd have his hands on you first...
[3] Parent: Umm... Dr Laura
How's Ian doing...?
[4] Laura: You know how when you have a large wound and it's in the process of healing, it can remain soft and release "pus" right?
Ian's lump is caused by a build up of such "pus" under the skin of his cheek
[5] Laura: I'm currently performing a procedure called the "seton stitch" on him
Page 09
[1] Laura: First we use these "seton forceps" to pinch the affected area until it's numb*
and with a hot needle, we pass a silk thread through the holes at the end of the forceps
We then pull this thread left and right alternately and so remove the pus inside the lump
(*Text below: To lose sensation)
[2] Laura: I've picked the best procedure
from the medicine I've learnt so far
[3] Father: B- but Ian doesn't like this "seton stitch" procedure
And he says there's a doctor called Asklepios who knows how to remove his lump completely...?
[5] Laura: The Asklepios is a maniac who calls himself a doctor
and cuts patients' bodies up, regardless of who they are
He's a despicable class one heretic
[6] Parents: What?!!
A- Are you serious?!
[7] Laura: Don't worry... I've already contacted the church
We only have a few guards at the moment, but soon a small cavalry unit would be joining them
Page 10
[1] Laura: I take pride in what I've learnt
I will not let those who make light
of our honorable practice of "medicine" touch my patient...
[2] Rosary: ...Geez
That four-eyes sure says whatever she wants!!
[3] Rosary: Hah, well no matter how many horsemen come, we can easily sneak in!!
And sir, you're surprisingly good at moving around without being spotted!!
Buzz: W- well I'm used to keeping low...
[4] Rosary: So how is he?
The little patient we're after!!
[5] Buzz: Y- yes
The boy...
[6] Buzz: He has a "parotid gland tumor"
It won't be too difficult to remove...
[7] Snake Column
A "parotid gland tumor" is a tumor that forms on the parotid gland, which is an organ that secretes saliva
It's said that the Kobutori Jiisan in the Japanese folk-tale could have had this condition too!!
Page 11
[1] Buzz: Tonight... let's take him out somehow
a- and do the operation...!!
[3] Rosary: Sir, you're starting to show more confidence!!
It's hard to believe how unreliable you looked when I first met you!!
[4] Buzz: R- really...?
Text: That person probably
[5] Text: Knows a lot of things I don't
I wanna hear it all...
[6] Text: About Dad
About the Biblos...!!!
Page 12
[4] Buzz: H- hello... I'm the Asklepios
I'm here to heal you, Ian-san...
[5] Buzz: Could you lend me an ear
As I tell you our plan to remove your lump...?
Page 13
[2] Rosary: Young master...
[3] Rosary: I wonder if he'd be ok...
Buzz: Ro- Rosary, I want you to prepare for the surgery at the inn across the bridge
I'll meet up with Ian-san at the bridge past midnight and head to the inn immediately
[4] Rosary: What?!!
It's dangerous sir!! Let me take your role!!
Buzz: N- no, I think that I'm probably better
at hiding and running away than you Rosary...
[5] Buzz: After all
[6] Buzz: running away was all I did for 2 years...
[7] Ian: Oh, there you are!!
Oniichan!!
Page 14
[1] Buzz: I- I'm sorry Ian-san... for asking you to do this
Ian: No... It's ok!!
Cuz soon you're gonna
[2] Ian: remove this lump for me nice and clean right?!
[3] Laura: There's no such procedure in the textbooks...
[4] Laura: The horsemen are everywhere searching for you... They should be here anytime soon
This is the end for you, "Ripper"
[6] Ian: D- Dr Laura!! You've got it all wrong
This oniichan is...
Laura: Ian...
Page 15
[1] Laura: I will treat your lump
with the best that medicine has to offer
Now be a good boy and return to the hospital
[2] Buzz: Y-
you won't be able to heal it...
[3] Buzz: I- I've explained it to Ian-san already
But Ian-san's lump isn't caused by "pus". It's a tumor
No matter how much of the "seton stitch" procedure you perform... You won't be able to remove it
[4] Buzz: B- but I
can remove the lump painlessly
[5] Laura: ... I graduated the medical school in Salerno with top grades
but I never heard of such a procedure...
[6] Laura: Or are you trying to say you've had a better education than me--
Ian: I'm sick of it!!!
[7] Ian: Dr Laura's seton stitch is painful!!
And I've had enough of it!!!
Page 16
[3] Laura: I-
Ian!!!
[4] Buzz: L- Laura-san
Ian-san!!!
Page 17
[1] Guards: Is he here?
No... not a sight
[4] Buzz: L- Laura-san looks ok
but Ian-san...
[6] Buzz: The third rib has punctured his lung...
It's a "pulmonary laceration"...!!!
[7] Buzz: He's hasn't got much strength because of his sickness ...
I need to operate on him immediately
Page 18
[1] Buzz: I have to
but I don't have my tools on me...!!!
[2] Buzz: I need to stop the bleeding from his lungs and fix his rib in place
I've got some medicine on me but...
[3] Buzz: I don't have a scalpel... I need at least a knife
or I can't cut him open...
[4] Buzz: If I swim to the inn... by the time I get back
Ian-san would be dead...!!
[5] Postale: I want you to save a boy named "Ian"
Once that's done, I'll tell you more....
[6] Buzz: It's not about the information
It's more than that...
[7] Buzz: If I let Ian-san die here
I wouldn't be an "Asklepios"...!!
Page 19
[1] Buzz: But what can I do...?!
Laura: U- uh...
Side text: Placed in a desperate situation...!!
[5] Text: What would Buzz do in this crisis?!
With his pride as an "Asklepios" on the table,
next chapter, his risky operation starts!!

Do you know why the title is written 試したイ instead of 試したい. I was thinking that the "I" could mean something else and that would make "Tameshita" in the past tense, similar to how 読んだ本 means "books (I've) read." Looking further into it, I remembered that 医 is pronounced "I" and can mean medicine, doctor, or cure. That would have to be it. lol So, I would have to say that the title has a double meaning. The more obvious one is "Tameshitai/I Want to Try It" while the more hidden one is "Tameshita I/Attempted Cure."
What do you think? :D
you can download chapter 4 and 6 from here
there is no limit to any ip
^__^
I noticed the katakana instead of the normal hiragana, but I didn't think much of it because it just seems to be how Postale's 語尾 (the way he ends his sentences) is. If you look at page 2 for example, he says 若いネ (ネ instead of ね), 初めましテ (テ instead of て) and 新しき医神ヨ (ヨ instead of よ). All his sentences end with a katakana.
I believe this katakana is used to give him a more... mechanical? alien? sort of impression. Cuz it seems that Postale's not just be an ordinary human: When I translated Rosary as calling him an "it", I did so because the Japanese text implicated a thing rather than a person (これ/kore cf この人/konohito etc) and the dots next to the word stressed this point.
But nevertheless, I found your 試した医 idea interesting :amuse In that case, 医 would mean doctor (the kanji may be used to form all those words you mentioned, but by itself in this context, 医 would have to mean doctor). I'd say DGM's more the manga for hidden meanings though... but I guess we'll just have to see :)
@sir_maxus:
Thanks for the link!! I'll start working on the trans, and it should be done... soonish... Stay tuned :XD
Thanks for the translations, ch 4, 5 and 6 should be done being cleaned and typeset soon(i hope >_>)
@Tofu: now i REALLY look forward to the scans, thanks in advance... :)
"This branch" = free trans? :XD Haha, thanks; Makes me feel less guilty dragging my feet about getting down to the next chapter :D It's just all that medical jargon and the author's info is sometimes dodgy, what with his current and medieval procedures all mashed up together. Not that I'm complaining; Translating Asklepios is a great way of expanding my medical knowledge :)
(Some of the stuff is actually quite interesting; Like with ch 4, I ended up reading up several articles about e.g. reconstructive surgery, grafting. I wonder if I should put the links up... Would anyone want them?)
@Tofu:
....*drool*... lol Just had to mention how I suddenly realised how much I miss tofu... There's this really nice brand in Japan called "Naminori Johnny" i.e. Surfer Johnny, which was named after a J-pop by Southern All Stars... And there's this really nice sesame seed dressing by the famous yakiniku restaurant, Jojoen, and when you have Surfer Johnny with it... *drool*
*cough* And I'll just mention a thanks here for the scans in advance too :D
@YamazakiSusumu:
*shrug* Tons of great ideas come from mistakes -- At least it was interesting!
yep, that`s the idea, you don`t get paid for what you do and the time you "waste" out of your personal life is in order for us to get something new, so we (the leechers and stand-by dudes) don`t have any right to complain about the release speed... something like "if you think we don`t release fast enough, stop bitching, get your ass off the sofa, drop the remote control and try do it yourself, lazy-ass!!", right? -_-;
yeah, various information on various technical fields didn`t kill anyone so far... if you still have the links, please give them... :D
Haha, knowledge is power? Although... curiousity kills... Hmm... :XD
Thanks, yeah I'll add the links for reference then! They'll be at the end of the trans from now on ;)
i too think that adding the links its a good idea, mostly because we can better understand what/why you translated something the way you did.
And thanks again for translating this very interesting serie :D
