Title:
Number 289: The Akatsuki Spy!!

Sidebar:
Fit bodies and mature minds. Embodiments of the sophistication and elegance of a shinobi.
(Replace "sophistication" with "dandyism" is you actually know what the second word means...)

Page 2

Sidetext:
“感情が無い”言い放つサイ…その真意は?
Sai claims "I have no feelings"... What is the true meaning behind what he says?

Frame 3, Sakura:
You say you don't feel anything... You say you don't have emotions, but what do you actually mean...?

Frame 4, Sai:
I meant exactly what I said.

Page 3

Frame 6, Sakura:
But still... If you have a brother too, then you should be able to imagine what it's like to lose that brother even a small amount, right...?

Frame 7, Sai:
Hmm...? Ah, well... I suppose...

Page 4

Frame 1, Sai:
My brother's already dead after all.

Frame 5, Sakura:
... But that's all the more reason to...

Frame 5, Sai:
I wonder if that's the kind of facial expression I should have used?

Page 5

Frame 4, Sakura:
... What are you talking about?

Frame 5, Sai:
Oh nothing... It's just that I didn't know what the right facial expression was to use when my brother died.

Page 6

Frame 1, Sakura:
This guy...

Frame 2, Yamato:
That's enough chit-chat for now. We need to get going, so gather up your stuff.

Frame 4, Sakura:
Sai... Any other day, I would have sent you flying again just a moment ago...

Page 7

Frame 1, Sakura:
You remember how I said I wouldn't hold back the next time you said something bad about Sasuke-kun, right...?

Frame 3, Sakura:
The reason I didn't do that was because of how Naruto said... That he'd work with even you if it means saving Sasuke-kun, even as you continue to ridicule him.

Frame 4, Sakura:
... No matter what kind of lowlife you may be... If it means saving Sasuke-kun, then I can't cause you any harm.

Sidebar Preview:
Feelings of discomfort run through Naruto's heart... What is Sai's hidden agenda!?

Page 8

Frame 1, Sai:
Sakura-san... It's times like this that, umm... How to put it... You're very nice to Naruto-kun.

Frame 3, Sai:
Where those feelings come from is something I don't understand... But in a book it said this...

Frame 4, Naruto:
Everyone, it's time to go. If we don't get there by noon tomorrow then this'll all be for nothing!

Frame 6, Yamato:

It's about time.

Frame 7, Bride Sign:

Frame 2, Sakura:
Yamato-taichou... Don't let us down...
("taichou" = "captain")

Frame 4, (Spy):

It's been a long while, Sasori-sama.

Frame 7, Sasori:

Frame 5, Yamato (Thought):

Frame 5, Yamato:

Were you followed...?

Page 13

Frame 1, Kabuto:
Everything is alright...

Frame 2, Yamato:
What about yourself?

Frame 2, Kabuto:
I was left with a strange sensation after your jutsu wore off and I remembered who I really was, Sasori-sama... I'm still somewhat heavy-headed...

Frame 3, Naruto:
Him again...!!

Frame 3, Sakura:
Unbelievable... To think that the Akatsuki spy was Kabuto...

Frame 4, Yamato:
I have a number of questions.

Frame 4, Kabuto:
I don't have much time, so please make it short. I'm putting my life on the line by trying to come here without having Orochimaru notice.

Frame 5, Yamato:
I want information about the location of the hideout and then Uchiha Sasuke.

Page 14

Frame 1, Kabuto:
We have a number of hideouts and we switch between them each week in order to evade detection. Some are of course located in countries outside of Oto. Orochimaru's spies have infiltrated them to help us set up bases.
("oto" = "sound")

Frame 2, Kabuto:
Still, our method of travel takes any number of forms and can make things difficult... Currently we reside in a hideout on a small island in a lake to the north. We will change our location three days from now.

Frame 3, Kabuto:
Uchiha Sasuke is also on that island.

Frame 4, Naruto:
It's so windy I can't hear anything at all.

Frame 4, Sakura:
Use your head a bit! That's the exact reason why were able to be as close as we are right now. The wind blows both our sound and scent away so we stay unnoticed.

Page 15

Frame 7, Kabuto:
What the... Just a wild rabbit...

Page 16/17

Frame 1, Text:
He was watching...!!

Frame 4/5, Text:
And now he sneers...!! The conclusion of this betrayal is...!?

But the reason I didn't do that was because of Naruto... And how he said he'd work with you, even as you continue to ridicule Sasuke.

son of, I was careless on this part :p.

Great translation :D as always--- :ossu

Nah, just a small mistake in the end... Your slight mistranslation, is actually probably a better reflection of what Sakura was thinking. :p

Anyhow, thanks for commenting one that part... It made me realize that I missed a whole bunch of the name-suffixes in this chapter.

Great translation, though I have a question.

Would you take this to mean something along the lines of "... are of course located in countries outside of Oto no Kuni, countries which....", or more of a "... are of course located in countries outside of the Otogakure no Sato, countries which...."?

Like, from your judgement, would you say that he's naming it the Sound Country, or just referring to the village?

I'm not a native speaker, but from the translation's side, it makes no sense to say "Countries outside of Vancouver", or "Countries outside of London" or the like.

Like, from your judgement, would you say that he's naming it the Sound Country, or just referring to the village?Yes, even with the actual Japanese for this chapter, it only really makes sense to read it as though it's referring to Oto as a country. The Japanese noun phrase in question, 音以外の他国 "oto igai no takoku", is probably best literally translated as "other countries besides Oto". Granted, the "hidden villages" were at first presented as just being villages inside a country, but this isn't the first time that text has appeared that refers to the village name as being a country. In a previous chapter (can't remember which one off the top of my head), the sidebar text that appears at the beginning of the chapter refers to Suna as a being a (great) country, and it did so in an even more direct fashion then the phrase we're talking about here, mind you.

Another thing to point out that might be of interest is that the manga has never revealed exactly what country Oto is supposed to exist in. The anime had it as either (can't remember) "ta no kuni", "Country of Rice Fields", or "cha no kuni", "Country of Tea", but when the second databook was talking about the "Gorge of the End" (the place where Naruto and Sasuke fight) it says that the gorge runs near the "country boarder" between the "Country of Fire" and the "Village of Oto" (I think that was the wording)...

Anyhow, to answer the question that I think your getting at... Yes, it would appear there's a bit of inconsistency between what was originally said about the villages and their countries, and then how they have actually been presented in the story of Naruto along the way.

Many thanks for that speedy response.

Looks like we're still awaiting solid proof to denounce the stupid fillers [mind, the way this was worded, the Ta no Kuni could be one of the "alternate hideouts" and Jiraiya's info could be wrong.... Kishimoto left the animators with a way out...]

Did you mean Chapter 248? Inane's version translates it as "The Sand Castle... is strong though. It's the home of the Lord that swallows all."

The Japanese was phrased more or less literally as "the great country of 'Suna'". Inane, BTW, translated it as "the influential region of the 'Sand'"... Assumeably because Pazuzu didn't want to partake in the inconsistency... Or so I would assume.
