The kanji read "earth" (tsuchi) "spider" (gumo). There is a youkai called Tsuchigumo with the head of an oni /ogre demon, the body of a tiger, and the legs of a spider, which preys on travelers in the mountains by immobilising them in its web and eating them. Tsuchigumo was also a nickname used in ancient times for groups of men who would not swear allegiance to the emperor and instead lived and fought independently.
