十牛の圖 中国、北宋代の禅籍。禅の修道の過程を、牧人と牛との関係になぞらえ、一○の絵と頌によって示したもの。廓庵禅師のものが広く行われ、尋牛･見跡･見牛･得牛･牧牛･騎牛帰家･忘牛存人･人牛倶忘･返本還源･入鄽垂手の順。狩野探幽･富岡鉄斎らの作品がある。

十牛の図
参禅学道してさとりに到達し、さらにそのさとりを超脱してなにものにも束縛されない境涯に達するまでを十段階に分けて示した図。何宋のかくあんしおん廓庵師遠の『十牛図頌』によって広く世に知られている。わが国では東福寺の正徹書記が十段階のそれぞれに二首の短歌を詠じ、その精神を分かり易く解き明かしている。
その十段階とは、
①尋牛（じんぎゅう）・・・参禅学道を志した初発心の段階。
②見跡（けんせき）・・・参禅学道の道が漸く開けた段階。
③見牛（けんぎゅう）・・・さとりの牛の影を見つけた段階。
④得牛（とくぎゅう）・・・さとりの牛を捉えた段階。
⑤牧牛（ぼくぎゅう）・・・さとりに到達して、漸くそれに安住し得る段階。
⑥騎牛帰家（きぎゅうきけ）・・・さとりの境涯に安住して他事に心の動くことのない段階。
⑦忘牛存人（ぼうぎゅうそんにん）・・・物我一如の境涯。
⑧人牛倶忘（にんぎゅうぐぼう）・・・無為にして放下した境涯。
⑨返本還源（へんぼんげんげん）・・・柳は緑、花は紅の境涯。
⑩入鄽垂手（にってんすいしゅ）・・・自然法爾の境涯。「入鄽」はしせい市井の庶民として俗世間にとけこむ意で、運に任せて自由無礙な生活をおくる境涯。この境涯を「にんうんじざい任運自在」とも「にんうんむさ任運無作」ともいう。

More or less, yeah, that's what it says.
If you tear the sentence apart to be more literal (in a way), I suppose it's something like this...

Speaking on behalf of NJT, it's certainly possible that that just slipped his mind as he was translating. If you translate just the first line by itself, then "I" should end up coming to the translator as most natural. And the Japanese doesn't have a pronoun for that first line; it has to be inferred. The context of Kabuto's statement only really comes into focus on the next page where he does explicitly say a Japanese equivalent of "we". Since the translation process is typically very linear, this is certainly a more than understandable "mistake" on NJT's part.

なんか...いい響きだろう？　「童心に戻る」ってね
Basically, NHG's research in this being a Zen (or in the case of my link, Tao) set of englightenment stages is correct. The blog I found lists the tenth and final stage as "Return to the world, return to having the heart/innocence of a child", which fits Naruto being ripped from Kyuubi's control and returned to his own naive (but lovable) self.
