Great job, my friend! *pachi* *pachi* *pachi* *pachi*!

There's one line I interpreted differently, though, and since I think centimetre missed it, I figured I'd get your thoughts on it right here:

He didn't back stab Konoha after all
it was all FOR Konoha...
in a barbaric kind of way
.

Here's the original line...

木の葉を裏切ったワケではなかった
木の葉のために。。。

武闘派の考えそうなことだ。

And my trans...

He didn't betray Konoha per say,
he acted in its best interest...

Sounds like a warmonger's reasoning
.

The word "butouha" I could not find in the dictionary... but before they'd refer to Danzou as a "hawk", and "ha" is definitely in the sense of "faction" here. I interpret that Yamato's saying "helping Konoha by killing the threat (Sasuke) instead of trying to reason with it is the way people from the pro-war faction (warmongers) think (so it's possible that this is what Danzou had in mind all along)."

三代目とは違い、ガチガチな合理的思考に基づく強硬・武闘派路線の主導者でサイの上司だ。
Unlike the Sandaime, he is a cold and calculating leader, a militaristic hard-liner. He is also Sai's superior.
Just personal opinion, but "warmonger" might be a tad bit strong. It's typically used in a derogatory sense, and would thus seem to illicit judgment a lot more than 武闘派 does... At least relative to the admittedly limited experience that I've had with the latter.

I guess my own personal judgement on Danzou's character somehow managed to seep into my translation.

Although, as long as I was consulting www.merriam-webster.com to make sure how to spell "seep" correctly, I looked up warmonger, and found this

One who urges or attempts to stir up war

Rather neutral as far as the definition goes. 'course, since stirring up war is generally regarded (at least publicly) as bad, we have the derogatory nuance.

But wait! Lemme refute myself! Warmonger refers to someone intersted in war, while butou-ha, as gleaned from the context, is simply a faction with a tendency to take a belligerent approach when dealing with affairs of State, which may include but need not imply waging all out war.

I'd go with S.O.B, but Nick would probably argue that it's too subjective, as well. :amuse

I dunno - I'm Nick originally translated the term as "militaristic hard-liner", but in this context, the "militaristic" part seems a bit too narrow to me. The point is that the guy's not gonna fuss over taking lives for what he believes to be the greater good. He'll take a belligerant approach to solving problems.

Sending anbu over to assasinate potential enemies is not a military action in that no army is involved - just your assassin.

Maybe just "hard-liner" - it's a bit broader than butou-ha, but taken together with the context, I think it works.

Or warmonger. I still like that one. :p

well the reason I went with barbaric, is that well, barbarians fight without really thinking, and so when they see a problem go and kill it :p.

Actually, this conception is just a hangover from Roman prejudice. Barbarians got their name from their reluctance to shave off their beard, as the romans did. "Barba" is Spanish and God-knows-how-many-other-romance-languages for "beard."

Since the romans were civilized and barbarians "uncouth", barbarian came to mean "savage." The term "civilized", by the way, comes from the latin word for "city". Thus, civilization literally means "a society which builds cities."

But barbarians had their own culture, and as far as I know, no barbarian tribe ever raided a city and massacred all 400,000 of its inhabitants - men, women and children included - as the Romans did with Carthage.

Those damned Ancient Romans!   :yelling

Hawk.

I'm reluctant to draw parallels with real life, but when you say "hawk", "military hard-liner" and such, you're usually referring to someone like Donald Rumsfeld or Dick Cheney: someone who believes in being "tough" with the enemy and that "casualties" are necessary evils.

Hmmm... here's another word... it's REALLY "out there", but then again, the term butou-ha wouldn't seem to be common, either.

Jingo.

Warmongerer is like fishmongerer. One who is "selling" war (or fish). I guess it is not inherently derogatory to say someone "sells" war as a solution to preceived problems. Rather knowing the individual in question like Danzou or Rumsfield is what imparts the bitter flavor to the word.

Right on target with the Ancient Roman analogy. However the British treatment of the Irish or even some of the darker pages from US history like the massacre of tens of thousands of Filipinos as an act of reprisal would serve as an example too.

Leave it to the redemptive powers of Naruto to reestablish humanity in a dead heart.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Thank you for your translation!

In the end the meanings of words are set by how people mentally store them and how they use them, which of course have a cyclical effect on one another. While "monger" probably has non-derogatory origins, virtually any word containing it that's used now a days has a strictly negative connotation. "Newsmonger", "gossipmonger", "hatemonger", "fearmonger", "scaremonger", "scandalmonger", "warmonger". all jokes aside though, what would you think would fit that situation :p木ノ葉を裏切ったワケではなかった。木ノ葉のために…武闘派の考えそうなことだ。
So he didn't betray Konoha after all. He was working to help Konoha... in just the way you'd expect from a militaristic mind like his.

May be a tad wordy, but something like this is probably what I'd end up with...

Or...

"It's not reason that reverse cut leaf. In order for leaf... It's thing that violent fight division probably think."

How's that? Maybe...

"He don't be dissin' Konoha none! He the playa that be pimpin' for Konoha... he just a little buttmonger, that all!"

... OK... I'll shut up now...

Do you think the average person would interpret the word "penismonger" to mean "vendor of penises"?

Fun fact: three out of five heated debates feature references to male genitalia.

Quote by Nihongaeri :

"Son of a buttmonger".  :amuse Sounds good to me!

I stand corrected. :D

Butt on actual topic, I have new suggestion, which has nothing to do with jingoism: cutthroat!

Based on Nick's "militaristic-mind" suggestion.

"You'd figure that's how his cutthroat mind works!"

If you want to stress the "faction" part of the term...

"It fits with his predictably cutthroat policy!"

"It'd be perfectly in line with his cutthroat policy!"

Let's remember that Yamato's expressing a possibility, not a certainty (although later pages confirm his suspicions to be true). At this point, he's just expressing his conjecture based on the evidence at hand: Sai's bingo book and what is ostensibly Danzou's way of thinking.

Dare I say it? I think we have a winner here. :tem[br]Posted at: May 04, 2006, 10:02:54 AM_________________________________________________

In using this method, while it is necessary that the translation bare some sort of vague resemblance to the original, typically the more "nanjakorya" you are able to elicit from the reader the better. I think I'm going to do my whole Naruto translation this week using the "nanjakorya" style, so expect many more translation jewels!
