I always try to get a good native sound to mine but you always go one better! Even my Japanese friend is impressed, are you bilingual?
I'll start working then.
haha normally I wait until I get home, but this was a short chap :p so figured what the heck :) 10 min, and was done :p
Thank you for the translation. :)
BTW thanx for the fast trans
Shouldn't that have been "Sakura?" instead of "Ah, it's Sakura..."? Because "か" is a question particle. So Sasuke said her name in more of a question than in a statement. I just wanted to being that up because that line didn't look right to me. And it didn't sound Sasuke-ish. :p
Sasuke here isn't saying "Sakura?" (as in "Is that you Sakura?", or in other words uncertainty), nor is he saying "Sakura?" (as in "Is that Sakura?", or in other words surprise). It's much more of a nonchalant, "So you're here Sakura...", or "Ah, it's Sakura...", just like NJT has. In this context the か does represent that Sasuke is becoming aware of something (that being that Sakura is here), but it does not express anything that can be related to a "question", at least in terms of my English.
Usually this kind of subtle meaning difference of the sentence ending か is related more so with intonation in speech, but since intonation typically isn't marked explicitly in writing, you need to base your judgment on the context. Although here, you can see it somewhat clearly in that an ellipsis is being used.
Take something out of context and the meaning becomes undefined.
For instance, "Naruto?" could express:
- Is that really you, Naruto?
- What do you think, Naruto?
- How or why is it that you're here/doing what you're doing, Naruto?
- Do you honestly mean that Naruto is this or that?
Then there are rhetorical questions and prompts:
- So that's it, is it?
- Cat got your tongue?
- You wouldn't like that, right?
- Now, that would really be a shame now, wouldn't it?
- Are you insane?
- Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?
In some of these sentences you could argue that an exclamation mark is more fitting semantically, but from a purely syntactical perspective, the inverted position of the subject and the verb makes the phrase into a question, regardless of whether or not the speaker is asking anything at all.
Among prompts we even find affirmative sentences that are given a question mark to suggest a different intonation:
- I suppose you'll be leaving tonight?
- I take it you're going to be late?
- etc.
WARNING: ACTUAL POINT COMING UP!
Where am I going with this? Well, nowhere in particular, I guess, but there is the thing that often times Japanese writers use question marks differently. I've seen a helluvalot of examples where they put the question mark at the end of what's clearly an affirmative sentence only to indicate that it's the point in a person's argument, something that the listener will be forced to take into account.
This is not how it's used in English (or in Spanish, for that matter), it's just the way some authors have arbitrarily decided to use it.
So when you see question marks and exclamation marks in Japanese, it doesn't always imply the same thing it would in English. Oh, and the chisai tsu? (<- non-stantard use of a question mark here!) at the end of a sentence it can serve the same purpose as an exclamation mark.
So, terminal っ --> !
I forgot to mention where I was going with what I said since I was rushed when I posted it . But what I was trying to get at was that you know how when a person hasn't seen someone in a long time and they see that person one day unexpectedly. And when they say that person's name it sort of comes at in a questionable/realized tone. I hope thats understandable.
That's how I originally meant to put it but I guess it didn't come out that way. :s But that's alright. :) I understand what you mean. Even thought I still think it could have been translated differently but that's me. :p
So just as examples of か usage...
With rising intonation at the end...
アイツ、間に合わなかったのか?
... this would in most all contexts become something along the lines of...
"What? He didn't make it on time?"
But with falling intonation at the end...
アイツ、間に合わなかったのか
... this would in most all contexts become something along the lines of...
"So he didn't make it on time..."
In the second case the か represents realization/acceptance/conclusion on the part of the speaker. This is in contrast to the first case where it represents doubt/surprise/disbelief... So anyhow, I basically just want to say to make sure that you don't get yourself trapped in a mindset of "か=?", because, well, the lowly little particle か deserves so much better than that.
Thanks :p.
:ossu
And njt if we did have an audio file of how he said then yes it would have been much easy to figure it out. But *snaps fingers in disappointment* we don't. And I caught you before you changed your post. :p lol
But thanks Nihongaeri that really helped. :smile-big :hug
haha yeah :p figured my two yen wasn't worth staying there :p so directed to the below post :p
in other words ばれちゃった:p i mean after all, the "...." does say it all but still it would help to have sound files....
Great trans anyway..
