What I do remember is that the chapter of the scroll flashback had the word "comrade" in the scanlation I downloaded. (Does that make sense? My English is failing me at the momment XD;; Stupid muscle relaxer) I hope that helps, but somehow, I doubt it XD;;;

Comrade, companion, friend.. well I saw all three for the same dialogue of the flashback... I'd stay with friend (since Sasuke is considered as a friend/brother to Naruto)
But he was talking to Sai about that, who was so not considered a friend at that time. I had taken it as Naruto asking Sai if he knew what it meant to be a comrade in a team as all he'd been doing was badmouthing. I'll admit that I could be entirely wrong.
hmmm well I changed it a little bit(inspired by nihongaeri). perhaps this convey's the meaning a bit more..?

Anyhow, everything is all fine and dandy if the word just appears once, used in one pretty clear sense. The translator can choose a word in the target language that fits the context. But the particular problem with "nakama" here is that, particularly in the previous chapter where Sai first wrote down the word in response to Naruto, the word got used multiple times, and it didn't exactly occupy the exact same semantic space each time. Or rather, its usage in the chapter ended up being very broad, which caused translation problems.
I racked my head over the matter to think of a word that would fit all the cases ("companion", "teammate", "ally", "comrade", "buddy", "colleague", "chum", "crony", "partner", etc, etc), but in the end "friend" easily fit the context best for me. The real clincher for me was Naruto's line at the end of the chapter, which went something like...
"If it means saving a 'nakama', then I'll do anything!"
Now it may just be me, but any of the above words other than "friend" sounded lukewarm at best once I thought about it. Actually, "teammate" almost worked for me, but there was another line in the chapter that made it sound awful... so I ended up with "friend".
And to tell you the truth, as I read this chapter, I'm quite glad I chose "friend".

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I have a long way to go in undertanding this language *sweatdrop*
