P171
Series Meeting
First, they decide which manga series to start and based on how many are chosen, they will choose an equal number of manga series to end
Copies of the names by the chosen candidates and the critiques by the meeting attendees are handed out
Attendee: I will start the process
P172
Attendee: First, Orihara-san’s “Tanktop”
There is no order in which the mangas are selected and it begins at the top of the pile
Uchida: I am the editor of the group, Uchida
The lead editor of the group briefs the story and what the mangaka is aiming to do
Attendee: Considering the difficulty of a second manga by someone who had a hit already… / I think it’s important to be careful with this just as the surveys say
Attendee: His fans must be expecting a lot but the style is a little different and it’s pretty well written
Attendee: We don’t really have to force Orihara-san to start this series yet since we have a lot of high-level mangas, so we can have him rework some of it to prepare for later
The mangas presented in the meeting are divided into four categories at the end
1) It becomes serialized
2) It is reworked and presented to the meeting again
3) It is tested as a one-shot manga
4) It is completely rejected
P173
Takagi: It started at 2:00 and it’s been 2 hours…they should be done soon… // Three card
Saiko: J one pair
T: I can’t be distracted even by playing cards…
S: Yeah, let’s stop…
T: Miyoshi…
S: Again…
T: I told you I’d call you when we hear from them so stop calling!
Miyoshi: I can’t stop thinking about it
S: Just let her come here…my heart is going to stop if she keeps calling every 10 minutes
T: Saiko says you can come here
M: Yes! I’ll be there!
P174
Fukuda: Let’s not hold a grudge no matter who gets serialized
Nakai: Uh okay
Niizuma: Happy crow! // jyajyaaaaan!
F: I got a one-shot from the first series meeting and then the Golden Future Cup // I was tested twice, so this time should finally be my chance
Nakai: A series… // I want to do it with Aoki-san
Attendee: Next is “hideout door”
Attendee: I am the editor of this / I let them prepare a series name after getting the results for the Golden Future Cup // The writer Aoki is in her third year of college / but she’s completed 3 one-shots in “Margaret” in a short period and she can write names with ease
P175
Attendee: I’m sure many of you are familiar with the artist, Nakai / He’s assisted many mangakas for the last 12 years and he’s supported “JUMP” as an experienced professional in artistry. I personally want to push him out into the world // both of them have quite a lot of experience / I believe that they’ll grow along with the series without losing to weakness
Attendee: They may have had good results in the Golden Future Cup but 3 mangas had good results and those 3 are to be discussed in this meeting // let’s keep the other 2 and the other newbies in mind
Attendee: I accept this one
Attendee: Thank you!
They are divided into “accepted” and “rejected” and if there are 2 to 4 “accepted” ones they will be serialized / if there are too many in the “accepted” pile, the discussion is opened up again to decide the new manga to be serialized
Diagram:
Accepted new series
it is discussed further again in the meeting
Rejected it is tested as a one-shot
completely rejected
P176
Attendee: Next, this one is from the Golden Future Cup / “KIYOSHI Knight” by Fukuda Shinta
Attendee: Edits have been made based on the commentary from the previous meeting / His one-shot ranked 7th and his results in the Golden Future Cup was one of the best out of all of the entries…
Attendee: You think so? / I wrote it in the critique, but I can only think of it as a good one-shot. Even these first three stories follow a similar pattern
Editor: we’re purposely making the first three stories in a one-shot style so that we can give a better sense of the series. It’s important to focus on the parts that were popular with readers
Attendee: it also seems like it’s just impact…how long do you think it will last as a series?
Editor: Impact is a good thing…
Attendee: But it’s had good results, so it is part of the “accepted” pile
Attendee: Yeah…I guess throw it in for now
Attendee: Another “accepted”…
Attendee: Next is Arai-san’s “Cheese Okaki”
P177
Miyoshi: I brought cards and the game of life to distract ourselves // wanna play?
T: No…
M: Why not?
M: Here’s some coffee…
T: Thanks
S: Thanks
M: Hey / it feels like an eternity to wait if we stay here so let’s go hang out somewhere / you’ll get a call on Takagi’s mobile anyway right?
P178
T: We’re still in our school uniforms and the diner won’t let us in without a guardian
M: You always skip school in your uniforms…
T: I don’t want to be overjoyed or depressed in public anyway
M: Oh…right…
M: So how good are your chances?
T: About 50% to be serialized
M: 50%? Even though you guys got the Golden Future Cup…?
S: Well, it’s more like we’re lucky if we even have a 20% shot
M: What!? / but you guys won the cup! Doesn’t it count for anything?
T: But the results of that Golden Future Cup were good for all three mangas / so it’s 33% considering we’re one of the three…
P179
T: It’s not even decided if they’ll pick one out of the three // plus, we have to remember what Hattori-san said about us still being high school students…
M: What!? But isn’t that guy doing “CROW” a high schooler too?
T: Yeah but…
T: I wonder if Niizuma will be chosen because he’s already had a hit… // I guess I don’t need to use “genius high schooler” as a selling point anymore… // Hattori-san also said that we’d need to get permission from our parents as high school students at a public school
M: Wha?! Your parents are against it?
S: My parents said that if I don’t produce anything while I’m in school, I have to give it up
T: My parents aren’t against it but it must be a pain for the editors having to get permission
M: Aren’t we getting a little negative?
T: Yeah
P180
Chief: Accepted
Attendee: Chief! You’ve accepted 4 out of the 7 we’ve seen already…
Chief: I don’t care, good ones are accepted
Attendee: Next is “Otter Number 11” by Hiramaru Kazuya
Editor: I am the editor and this is a rookie I highly recommend
Attendee: Wasn’t it just an honorable mention in the “Treaure”?
Editor: Hiramaru-san is still 26 years old / and he’s hardly ever read any manga in his life
Editor: He found a “JUMP” on the train on his way to work and he thought “I could do this” all of a sudden / so he quit his job that day and started to draw // a month later his “Otter Number 11” got an honorable mention, isn’t that amazing?
P181
Editor: Most people start in their teens by copying manga and drawing it / and when they improve to a point they think about becoming a mangaka // then from books and resources they start to gain skills / there is an overabundance of resources for people who want to become a mangaka these days / in my opinion, there is too much
Editor: But Hiramaru-san is different / He started at zero and trying out everything by himself without even having the knowledge of screen tones // he didn’t learn anything from anybody, just from one issue of “JUMP”… / and he was able to create a character that can easily be animated, and that’s impressive to me
Attendee: it’s true that some people don’t know how to draw lines without taking some class or reading about it
Editor: Yes, but this guy figured it all out by himself in a short period of time – he’s a genius
Attendee: If you believe that story, we can expect a lot but…giving him a series so soon…?
Chief: That’s interesting and his name is good too / accepted
Attendee: Wow…
Editor: Thank you very much!
Attendee: Another accepted…
P182
Attendee: “Suspicious Detective TRAP” by Ashirogi Muto
Editor: Hattori is the editor for this
Editor: Everyone seems to worry about their status as high schoolers but… / I will first point out that they can do this while they go to school // there are 7 more names ready aside from the 3 presented in this meeting. They were asked to write 1 story of 19 pages every 2 weeks, while they were also doing their 5 stories for the Golden Future Cup / all the names do not differ in their quality or level of completion
Attendee: Their diligence and skills are impressive but they’re going to graduate in a year / we don’t have to do it now, especially because they’ll be compared with Niizuma-kun
Editor: No / They’re very conscious of Niizuma Eiji and would like to debut while they’re in high school // if they want that, I want to let them do it
P183
Attendee: I remember they came here a lot when they were still in junior high… / Yoshida mentioned earlier that a lot of people try to become mangakas by first focusing on drawing but they’re different from that…they’re really putting everything into becoming a mangaka… / I don’t know how to put it but they’re not like other newbies
Attendee: That’s true, if you compare them to others their names were always really well done // it was kind of freaky…
Attendee: Well it is 2 people doing it so it makes sense and I do accept that their stories are good / but what do you think about a detective series? You can kind of assume the trick in all of these names // they might have 10 names now but they might run out of ideas soon. Is there a possibilitu that it might eventually turn into a battle-type?
Attendee: There are 7 in the accepted pile but we can’t serialize them all… / so we need to start this again
Attendee: Haaaaa here’s the start of the real series meeting
Attendee: It should be a joyous scream that we release
P184
M: It’s already 7:30, you’re sure it’s today?
T: It’s definitely today
T: If it’s this late, does it mean we were rejected? / maybe because it’s hard to break bad news
S: They wouldn’t beat around the bush for newbies like us. It’s only natural for us to get rejected
T: AAAAAHH this is warring me out!
M: Should I make you dinner?
T: I CAN’T POSSIBLY EAT ANYTHING NOW!!
M: You don’t have to get so mad…
T: Sorry…
P185
Yujiro: Who said let’s play cards?
Editor: You did
Hattori: Let’s stop…
H: It’s taking them an awfully long time
Y: Well the longer it is the higher our chances might be
H: What do you mean?
Y: The more there are new mangas to be serialized the meeting will be that much longer // they have to fight over which manga is going to have to end
Y: If nothing is chosen to start, the meeting ends quickly
H: I see
P186
H: If Ashirogi Muto is serialized, I’ll be their editor right?
Y: Don’t ask me…it should be but sometimes that’s not the case… / but even if you’re not you’ll still get credit for starting the series for them // but it’s always better to be able to be their editor and aim for a hit
H: I want to be able to watch over them despite if they’ll boost my career…
Y: That’s the same for everyone
Y: But we can’t complain even if we’re assigned to a manga we don’t want to work with // that’s what makes us regular salarymen!
Y: If Fukuda-kun is serialized, it’ll be my third one / I usually get to work on the ones that I bring up but I guess it’s up to the superiors, and it’s also up to if they serialize it
Editor: it’s so late!
Y: Who’s calling me so late?
P187
F: WHAT!? STILL!? // They’ve been meeting for 6 hours? It’s 8:00 already! // you said it would be 2-3 hours!
Y: Normally it’s 2-3, it was last time / just wait until I call you
F: Why do you care? You’ve got nothing to do since you’re not in the meeting!
Y: Fukuda…
Y: You’re a little too rude to me, I’m waiting here for your sake // if you are serialized I’m going to have to teach you some manners to start off
F: What do you mean “if”? You shouldn’t be saying “if” when I’m sitting here believing that I will be serialized! Do you want me to teach you Japanese!?
Y: Ok I’ll teach you manners and you teach me Japanese!!
F: So it’s really no decided yet?
Y: Yeah I’m frustrated too
Nakai: Phew // the results aren’t out yet…
P188
Chief: May the lead editors leave the room please
Attendee: It’s been a while since we’ve had four // two newbies and two pros is an ideal balance // this was a tough one and it took so long!
*Creak*
Aida: Aida-group, over at this table
Yoshida: oh hey, okay Yoshida-group over here
Editor: So we’re over here…
When the meeting ends, the lead editor of each group explains to the team in full detail of what was discussed and the results of the meeting. The chief and assistant chief editors further discuss which editors will work with who based on the new series which must be obliged by everyone, and once all of this is done they finally contact the mangakas
P189
M: Isn’t it a little too late?
T: Haaaa… / Hattori-san said we can always submit it again in 2 months even if we’re rejected this time but / I don’t want to go through this again / I want to be serialized…
T: HERE WE GO!!
T: This is Takagi…
