Page 35: Happiness and Loneliness

P165

Miura: My name is Miura, and I recently joined the company. Nice to meet you!! // Don't I look familiar?

Saiko: Pardon me?

Miura: Haha that's fine / I've seen the two of you around the office a lot / like when you guys and Fukuda-kun barged into the office!

Saiko: Anyway, please come in

Miura: Thank you!

P166

Miura: What!? / You already have a work space? That's great!

Saiko: I had a relative that was a mangaka so I inherited it...

Hattori: So this is Kawaguchi Taro's work space...

Miura: Ohh a relative? How are you paying the rent?

Saiko: Oh it's very cheap, we only pay the utilities really...

Miura: That's great! That means we don't have to worry about determining the costs to rent a room when discussing your contract / great great!!

Takagi: What's this guy's deal?

Hattori: Let's not get ahead of ourselves, let's first talk about the handover

Miura: Oh, yes

Saiko: Handover!?

P167

Hattori: I will not be your editor for "Gitantei TRAP" , it will be Miura

Miura: I'm happy to be working with you

Saiko: Why...?

Hattori: It's inevitable. You guys know that I'm the editor for the recent series, "Tarakone" right?

Saiko: Yes, we're aware

Hattori: And "ONE PIECE" has transfered over to me as well. It's too difficult to try to transfer these two over to someone else at this point. / That's why I had to transfer "TRAP" to Miura

Takagi: But we've worked together up to now...

P168

Takagi: Do you have to switch no matter what?

Hattori: Yes!!

Takagi: Hattori-san...

Hattori: It's a common thing

Just the other day, a long-time mangaka came into the office to directly petition the handover of his editor

Mangaka: But it's a story we worked together on, please reconsider
Editor: I understand but what's done is done, I'm sorry

It was a decision the chief editor and assistant chief editor had already made and there was no way of overturning it, so the chief editor had to convince him of it

Miura: I remember that! / There's no way a rookie like Ashirogi Muto can protest! // it's okay, I'll work hard too!! You guys can come with a bang!!

Saiko: He seems to have the enthusiasm...

Takagi: Are we going to be okay switching editors...?

P169

Saiko: I'm glad to be working with you too...

Takagi: As am I...

Miura: Yeah, good!

Hattori: Ok, so now I'll leave you guys to talk // take care of them, Miura

Miura: Ok // Hattori-san is acting like editor handovers aren't a big deal / but to tell you the truth, he tried to fight to remain your editor last night and got in trouble

Saiko and Takagi: Hattori-san...

P170

Keeping up a series is hard work // good luck to you guys, Ashirogi Muto

Saiko: Excuse me! // Hattori-san

Saiko and Takagi: Thank you very much for helping us // Thank you very much!

P171

Hattori: Let me read a great manga, alright?

Saiko: Of course!

Takagi: Please do!

Hattori: See ya

P172

Saiko: This is just another hurdle... / a hurdle that we have to overcome as professionals... // my uncle told me about how it's inevitable that editors change // and how it takes some time to get used to the new one...

Saiko: They also say, "editors are hit or miss" / Hattori-san was definitely a hit

Miura: Hey hey, are you saying I'm a miss?!

Takagi: Oh, no...

Miura: It'll be fine! I'm still 23, so let us young guys work hard together!

Takagi: Uh yes

We were both happy that we're getting serialized but lonely that Hattori-san wouldn't be working with us anymore, but our enthusiasm to work hard kept getting stronger

P173

Takagi: That much? // We get that much from a yearly contract?

Miura: It's too much for you high school kids! / Usually we can negotiate for some more in order to find a work space, but you guys don't need it! So I won't give it to you! // So for one page, you get 12000 yen and color pages are 1.5 times that

Takagi: what? / I heard newbies only make 9000 yen

Miura: That's for one shots, series get 12000 yen / you don't have to respond to each thing I say, so just listen! // "all publishing rights belong to Shueisha" / so you can't draw anything for another magazine...that's about it!

Takagi: We don't even have time to write for another magazine...and we don't want our series to end within the year if we're making a yearly contract

Miura: Oh right! / I'll bring the formal contract next time, so you have to sign it then

Saiko: Ok

Miura: And as for your assistants / there's one pro-level candidate named Ogawa-kun, but I don't know any other people that would make good candidates

P174

Miura: Do you know anyone or have any friends that could do it? / anyone who can draw manga

Saiko and Takagi: Ishizawa?
Ishizawa: Wanna see?

Saiko and Takagi: no no there's no way

Miura: Well, anyone can do beta* or tone** so if you can just find one person to help it would be great
*beta: painting parts black
**tone: sticking special background images

Takagi: How about Miyoshi?

Saiko: That's our last resort

Miura: Ok! I'll do something about it! // aside from the highly skilled person, it might be nice to choose 2 young people based on personality!

Saiko: Ok

Takagi: Um

P175

Takagi: How much do we have to pay the assistant?

Miura: Oh, that's important! 10000 yen a day / if he works four days, that's 160000 yen a month / but for a highly skilled one, about 380000 yen a month

Takagi: 380000 yen!?

Miura: That's pretty much the norm but he'll have the skills to be up to your level and he'll also be able to manage the other assistants // Plus, you have to pay for transportation and food / you guys will be in the red until the comic comes out! / if the series ends at 10 weeks, you're stuck in the red! / That's what they say, but you guys have a work space with cheap rent so you guys should be okay!

Takagi: Please don't speak such foreboding words when we're about to start a series!

Miura: Oh right! My bad! // anyway, is it okay for people to stay here?

Saiko: Uh, there's only one room // My uncle used to draw gag-manga so his 2 assistants would come in the afternoon and leave the next afternoon / so there's only room to nap...

Miura: What!? Your uncle was at the level of using assistants?

Saiko: Yes, his name was Kawaguchi Taro

Miura: WHAAAAAAAAAAT!?

P176

Miura: WOW!! THIS IS KAWAGUCHI TARO'S WORK SPACE!? WOW!! // I USED TO READ "SUPER HERO LEGENDS"!! THAT MANGA WAS BORN HERE! // YOU'RE KAWAGUCHI TARO'S NEPHEW? THAT'S AMAZING! / I'M GETTING PUMPED ABOUT THIS MANGA NOW!

Saiko: I don't think my uncle being Kawaguchi Taro has anything to do with this... // I wonder if we'll be okay with Miura-san...

Miura: Ok! So as long as we have futons here, assistants can stay over since you guys go home to sleep right? / we'll give the assistants their own key and you guys will just have to remove any valuable items from this place

Saiko: Ok

Miura: As for the schedule, the deadline is two weeks before JUMP's sale date / that means we should have 2 chapters ready by the time JUMP is on the bookshelves on Monday / But ideally speaking, we should have it ready by Friday!

Takagi: Okay

Miura: So, we've got 4 series starting and "TRAP" is the 3rd one to start of the 4, so your first deadline is February 11th

P177

Miura: The first story should be 58 pages, the second story 25 pages, but you should ignore the schedule and finish them as soon as possible / but the fourth story shouldn't be finished too soon because we want to know what the reader survey says / and is it okay to start hiring assistants in the new year?

Saiko: Yes... // he's pretty organized and has everything under control, maybe he actually is a pretty good editor

Miura: Any questions?

Takagi: We know that Arai-sensei and Ibaraki-sensei are both a starting new series but we don't know anything about Hiramaru-san

Miura: I actually have never met Hiramaru-san either, but I hear he's a mangaka that used to be a salaryman

Takagi: An ex-salaryman?

Miura: He suddenly quit his job at 26 and started drawing manga / Hattori-senpai even said that he's another type of genius next to Niizuma-kun

Saiko and Takagi: A genius!?

Miura: Niizuma-kun used to read manga when he was a kid and has drawn a lot / but Hiramaru-san hadn't read manga until recently and even though he's always had artistic talent to begin with, the first manga he ever was good enough to make it as an entry in the Treasure Awards

P178

Miura: The whole editorial staff think it might be the most anticipated series / and I thought it was good too! // He has real world experience, so he might be able to produce results that surpass Niizuma Eiji!

The most awaited... // good... // surpass Niizuma Eiji...

Miura: It's fine!! It's slightly gag-style so it won't be similar to your manga at all // and manga isn't about comparing one from another! Each one is determined if they're good or bad as individual pieces!!

Saiko: Hai!

Takagi: I agree with you completely, we'll put our souls into our manga

Saiko: He says some convincing stuff // he gets it, and now I'm getting pumped

P179

Miura: OK! AND YOU GUYS ARE YOUNG ABOVE MORE THAN ANYTHING! WORK YOUR HARDEST UNTIL YOU HIT A WALL!! / LET'S DO IT!

Takagi: Uh, I don't think we should hit a wall...

Miura: Oh right! My bad!

Saiko: Which is he...he's not a bad person... // but...

Miura: One more thing, Januar 17th is the new year party

Saiko and Takagi: New year party!?

Saiko: I've seen the comment "At the new year party..." on many mangaka's comments so I've known about it but / we get to go too?

Miura: Yeah! Anyone who has a new series can attend!

Takagi: Are all the mangakas with series coming?

Miura: Of course! Anyone who doesn't attend will be punished unless they couldn't come due to an extreme circumstance!

P180

Takagi: I'm happy...but also really nervous!

Saiko: It's beyond nervousness...

Miura: There's no need to be so nervous! Hattori-senpai and Niizuma-kun and I will be there too!

Saiko: Yeah...

Miura: Anyway, I'll have a car come pick you up on the 17th, should it come here?

Saiko and Takagi: A car!? No, we will go by train!

Miura: It'll be problematic if you guys get lost or something and come late, and I'm the one who gets in trouble if I don't get you a car! / You guys are serialized mangakas, you're allowed to act more proud!

Saiko: Where is the location?

Miura: I haven't heard yet, it's probably around Aoyama in a fancy place / I hear that most mangakas don't even know where it is and the drivers just take them there / since attendance is required, they have no choice

Serialization, an editor handover, a contract, assistants, the new year party - they're all too real and I suddenly realized that I had become a professional and I was suddenly filled with anxiety and hope at once

P181

Starting the next day, I started to draw the 1st chapter

Miyoshi: Why not!?

Takagi: Of course not!

Miyoshi: What about small tasks or making tea? / I can be a gofer or make dinner

Takagi: No! It's going to be a work space of 5 guys!

Miyoshi: What about Christmas?

Takagi: I bet I can't do anything...

Saiko: You should at least see her for Christmas, as long as you do the name before then

Miyoshi: Saiko-kun...

Takagi: No, I can't be slacking off if Saiko is working / I can't unless you say you'll go on a date with Azuki too

Saiko: Sorry, Miyoshi...

P182

Takagi: We got our own series but it gets tough for us now / there's no way that all four out of four mangas will be serialized for a long time / this is the most important time for us

Miyoshi: Fine, I understand

Shuujin really did work on Christmas Eve

Takagi: You don't have a girlfriend do you?

Miura: If I did, I wouldn't be working on Christmas Eve! I'd forget about work!

Takagi: I have one though

Miura: What! How dare you take that attitude with someone older than you!

We were worried at first about the new editor but upon seeing Shuujin getting along with him, those feelings of anxiety disappeared

Miura: I think that's good for today, and don't forget to think about rivals for the character! Rivals!

Saiko: Alright

Miura: Oh, Mashiro-kun I'm thinking about bringing by the assistants on Sunday, how's it sound? / just a meet and greet

Saiko: Okay, a few pages are ready already anyway

P183

Sunday

Miura: This is the rumored Ogawa-kun / he's going to be the chief assistant, he looks young but he's 31, right?

Ogawa: Yes

Takagi: I didn't hear about any girl coming here! You implied they were all guys

Miura: It shouldn't matter, guy or girl! I finally found 2 assistants that have had experience with a shounen and shoujo manga! // or what? You can't focus with a girl around? You're so young!

Takagi: That's not it! // I told you I have a girlfriend, right?

Miura: So what?

Takagi: So it's complicated...

Thanks for the TL. I look forward to seeing your TL used by Akatsuki. Anyway, here are my comments ^^;;

p.168: Miura: I remember that!
Hmm.. the other TLer said "It was that sorta thing." in that speech bubble.

p.169: Miura: Ok // Hattori-san is acting like editor handovers aren't a big deal / but to tell you the truth, he tried to fight to remain your editor last night and got in trouble

The other TLer said he got angry...

p.171: Saiko: Hai!
Takagi: Hai!

It might be better not to leave it as "Hai" and put an English equivalent since you are TLing to English. Or something that gives the same impact - like "Yes!" "Definitely" or something similar.

p.172: Saiko: This is just another hurdle... / a hurdle that we have to overcome as professionals...

The other TLer translated it as the pain of being a pro instead of a hurdle.

p.173: Takagi: That's much?
That much?

p.173: So for one page, ou get 12000 yen and color pages are 1.5 times that

Oops, you forgot the 'y' in 'you'. Oh, and I guess the other TLer wrote the wrong price. They wrote 1200 for 一万二千円 >_<.

p.173: Miura: And based on your assistant / there's one pro-level candidate named Ogawa-kun, but I don't know any other people that would make good candidates

The 'And based on your assistant' part doesn't really make sense in conjunction to the second statement since it's not based on their assistant(s). It might be better to say something like "As for your assistants..."

p.174: Saiko and Takagi: Ishizawa?

You forgot to translate the little 'みる?' in that panel (as well as the other TLer) ^^

p.175: Takagi: Please don't say things such examples of bad omen when we're about to start a series!

Sorry, but this is really badly worded and confusing. It might be better as something like "Please don't speak such foreboding words when we're about to start a series." or something similar.

p.175: Saiko: Uh, there's only one room // My uncle used to draw gag-manga so his 2 assistants would come in the afternoon and leave the next afternoon /

I'm being a bit nitpicky, but the other TLer said evening...

p.175: Saiko: Yes, his name was Kawaguchi Taro

Dunno if it's a big deal, but the other TLer wrote Kawaguchi Tarou... (with 'u' or no 'u'...)

p.176: we'll give the assistants their own key and you guys will just have to remove any valuable items from this plae

plae -> place :P

p.176: that means we should have 2 stories ready by the time JUMP is on the bookshelves on Monday

It might be better to have stories -> chapters since Jump releases in chapters, unless you are talking about whole story lines (arcs) that span a few chapters...

p.177: Saiko: Yes... // he's pretty organized and has everything under control, maybe he's a good assistant

Well, I would say assistant -> editor, but the other TLer had a slightly different take on this line- as Miura's actions confirmed Saiko's thought that Miura is very capable/a "can do type person" while your translation seems to show Saiko is a bit more tentative in his belief that Miura is capable.

p.177: Takagi: We know that Arai-sensei and Ibaraki-sensei are starting new series' but we don't know anything about Hiramaru-san

no apostrophe for series ^^

p.177: but Hiramaru-san hadn't read a manga until recently and even though he's had artistic talent to begin with, the first manga he ever was in the Treasure Awards

Drop the 'a' in first part and "he's had" -> "he has." The "the first manga he ever was in the Treasure Awards" part is REALLY confusing because the other TLer doesn't mention Awards- so did he win this award? or the magazine he debuted in was called Treasure Awards? I suggest something like "He debuted in the Treasure Awards." if that's the name of the magazine or "His first manga won the Treasure Awards." if he won an award...

p.178: Miura: The whole editor staff think it might be the most awaited series

editor -> editorial; awaited -> anticipated

p.179: Miura: One more thing, Januar 17th is the new year party

oops- forgot the 'y' in January + it should be New Years party :)

p.180: Saiko: It's beyond nervousness...

Hmm the other TL has it as "There's nothing to be nervous about..."

p.180: Miura: I haven't heard yet, it's probably around Aoyama in a fancy place/I hear that most mangakas don't even know where it is and the drivers just take them there / it's even called a required meeting party

The other TL says it's "probably at the Kojyareta place near Aoyama" and the practice of bringing them in cars is compulsory- not the meeting...

p.181: Starting the next day, I started to draw the 1st story

Following the earlier suggestion of changing story -> chapter

p.181: Miyoshi: What about small tasks or making tea? / I can be a go for or make dinner

Confusing part for the second part- do you mean she says she wants to be a gofer? or....is it like a "I can go out and buy or make dinner for you" type thing?

p.181: Takagi: No, I can't be slacking if Saiko is working

slacking off

p.182: Shuujin reall did work on Christmas Eve
reall -> really

p.182: Miura: I think that's good for today, and don't forget to think about your rivals!

Hmm... the other TLer seems to infer that Saiko should think about making a rival for his manga's protagonist (or that's what I thought)

p.182: Miura: Oh, Mashiro-kun I'm thinking about bringing an assistant by on Sunday, how's it sound? / just a meet and greet

He says an assistant, but he brings 2, so make it plural - "bringing asssitants by..." and there was some other part in the beginning that had it singular, but I'm too lazy to look so you should probably change that part to plural too...

//Side Note: I just noticed when comparing your TL with the other one, that they spelled the manga タラコーン as Tarakone as opposed to your Taracorn. :P And personally, I'd prefer loneliness to lonesomeness as the title.

Oh, and I never knew handover (besides the verb phrase "hand over") was a word before reading your TL. I learned something new. ^_^

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your TLs in the Akatsuki scans. Hopefully, they'll have someone check your TL well, but I'll be sure to make any comments if I see any questionable parts if you don't mind. ^^;;

Yeah, you should consider some of those things c_k's saying for future translations.
And you can't just skip "with a DON", it's VERY IMPORTANT.

And I should've just put in loneliness, really, instead I put in sadness by accident then later decided it wasn't worth changing because it basically meant the same thing in context.

And I fixed that price thing in a few hours, the scanlation has it proper, also.

As for those minor spelling errors, Akatsuki does have a proofreader. So that's not a big deal.

Plus, really for chapter translations, you shouldn't number them like it's aprt of a volume. Volumes have blank pages in them and things like that so the things start on the right side of the page, plus often they first chapter doesn't all start on the same page of the volume, depending on stuff in the beginning.
Also your order went 67->66->67->68 etc...
Stuff like that can screw up the scanlators.

Well, I didn't really like the "with a DON," and it wouldn't make sense to new manga readers since that's more of a Japanese SFX, so I personally would have said "with a bang" to convey that feeling. =)

Oh, the one thing that both Kewl210 and you, Shirokuro, need to work on is to not make so many comma splices, which are sentences that are joined by a comma. You either need to separate them with periods, add an 'and' OR separate them with semicolons (;) if they are related statements.

I hope that you, Kewl, will also continue to check Shirokuro's script when she takes over TLing Bakuman as a sort of TLC (translation check) so that you will be able to see if anything is missed or should be included. ^_^

Thanks c_k for edits :) I fixed most of them, but for those parts that I conflicted with the other TLer, I only fixed a few b/c I still agree with my TL...not to sound close-minded but I think they're correct :p

The things with Taro vs Tarou...I think I had a discussion with other scanlators that it's up to the Tler. Like Yuta vs Yuuta. Often times with real life names, they would write Taro and Yuta, so it's a little tricky.

The Treasure awards things is unclear if he won, but it's mentioned as a big deal that he was in an awards contest with his first manga. i tweaked it a bit.

I have no idea about the Tarakone one...I changed it anyway...

Agreed, comma splices is like a subconcious thing really. It feels weird to have periods and semicolons in manga, b/c you never see them if you know what I mean?

Kewl0210 thanks for the feedback. i actually don't like leaving it as "DON" b/c i bet as c_k mentions, readers that are new to the scene won't understand it in the way that you do. I get what your saying, and sorry for leaving it out. I fixed it with "bang."
And yeah, I'll do page numbers according to RO from now on, thats what i usually do.
