Sometimes there needs to be a bit of prepwork in order to have manners to meet people, particularly those related to those you know!

No. 31: Helen-chan’s Mama

113.
Ta-chan: Ah, Helen-chan has come.
Helen: Good day to you.
SFX: Gacha
Hideko: My daughter is always indebted to you. I am her mother, Noguchi Hideko.
Helen: Surprised.

114.
Tokuhiro: Huh? Why does she have a Japanese mother--? Hadn’t you read this from the start—Helen-chan’s penname is Helen Noguchi…in short, Helen-chan is half Japanese and American.
Book: Currently in this person’s head is filled with the Olympics.
Tokuhiro: If it’s about that, then for those of you regretting that you have to read Ta-chan from the beginning
Tokuhiro: Ta-chan vol. 1 is now on sale!! (Good Timing)
Book: Ta-chan
Editor: A gold medal for your trade skills……
Hideko: It is a surprise. Her mother isn’t a beauty.
Jane: It…it isn’t that.
Ta-chan: N…no.
Hideko: They’re nice people.
Helen: They are.
Jane: Th…this piglet is just so cute.
Tachan: It’s mother was a boar—

115.
SFX: Musu
Ta-chan: Wa…wasn’t our example bad?
Jane: Even orangutans have this cute children but.
Ta-chan: When they grow up, they’re like this—
Hideko: I’m going home!!
Helen: It’s a joke, mama, an African joke.
Helen: Really, enough…they made a joke to soften the mood. I’m embarrassed that you don’t know that, in spite of being an engineering professor that came out of Toudai.
(TN: “Toudai” refers to “Tokyo University”, one of the most prestigious universities in the country)
Hideko: Really. It seems like even a kite can give birth to a hawk.—
Helen: No way—mother.
Caption: Kite
Kite: It’s strange, it’s strange.
Jane: As I thought.
(TN: These two panels had a really weird joke based on an expression and its literal interpretation. The expression Hideko uses for her relationship to Helen was “Tonbi ga taka wo unda”, which has a literal translation of “even a (black) kite can give birth to a hawk”, and is basically an expression that stands for “even a plain parent can give birth to a genius.” Of course, an actual kite ends up responding back with “umahen” (it’s a strange birth), thus why I went with the literal version instead of the figurative, just due to the kite’s response)

116.
Jane: By the way, what’s going on?
Hideko: Actually I was thinking of giving an invitation to a meal at our home, even if it’s next week, in gratitude for Helen always being indebted to you.
Helen: Of course, we won’t be having meat meals since both Jane-san and Ta-chan are vegetarians, but feast on being given the skills of mama and myself.
SFX: Goku…
Etekichi: Kikiki—(I’ll have anything since I’m omnivorous)
Hideko: So then, come without fail. Since we’ve come to accept you as family.
Jane: Do that.
Editor: That is popular—
Tokuhiro: Do that.

117.
Narrator: And so…
Caption: Intended as a napkin.
Jane: Fine? We’ll go from steadily remembering table manners, since they’ll laugh in being a savage.
Jane: Knife in the left hand, fork in the right. There are only these two among them, but if it’s fully lined up, you use them from the outside with each of the meal’s courses.
Jane: If you pull on a chair, you get on the chair from the left side. Yes, yes, before they transport in the hors d’oeuvres, you quickly have the napkin…
Ta-chan: Inserted in an embarrassing place. It brings relief on many days.
Jane: Are you stupid!!
Jane: A fallen knife will be picked up by a waiter, without being picked by yourself.
Jane: Right: that’s the rhythm. In the midst of a meal, when you place the knife and fork, put them in a figure-eight on the plate.

118.
Narrator: As such, Jane’s special training began!!
Jane: Understand no matter how much I say it: the napkin goes on the knee!!
Jane: I can’t stand that clattering sound!!
Jane: When you’ve finished, place your knife and fork in line!!
Jane: Fine: this thing in this sort of form will be brought out with water in it but you can’t drink it. This is called a Finger Bowl.
Jane: In short: you wash your finger like the name means.
SFX: Chabo chabo
Ta-chan: I’ll wash my balls.
Jane: Are you washing that thing!!
Jane: If it’s come to this, we can only push you hard, Spartan-style! Be prepared: it’s an all-nighter until you remember your manners accurately!!

119.
Narrator: And so, on that day…
Helen: Hey Jane, Ta-chan: I’ve come to pick you up.
Ta-chan: Fork on the left, knife on the right……
Hideko: Welcome.
Narrator: It was ultimately a Japanese meal.
(TN: As you see, a Japanese meal uses hands and chopsticks…)

TN: This chapter really should have been called "Ta-chan learns table manners" as opposed to being associated with Helen's mother. While it is nice to finally meet her, the chapter really was more about the dinner and Ta-chan's attempt to learn manners for said dinner (only to turn out to be Japanese-style...where manners are quite different). It wasn't bad: I did love the "baby animal/mother" joke and somehow watching Ta-chan and Jane go crazy just for a dinner that didn't need it was fun to watch...but the title was severely misleading.
