As naive as Ta-chan is about the world outside the jungle, that doesn't mean he doesn't have the potential to learn the basics...

No. 36: Ta-chan’s Studies

28.
Jane: What are you doing?
Helen: It’s called “Shougi”, a Japanese game. If I can teach the rules to Ta-chan, he’ll remember them immediately.
SFX: Jara jara
Ta-chan: CHECK—MATE
SFX: Bachin
Caption: Dog
(TN: The weird joke here was really tough to translate into English but basically it’s this: Ta-chan ends up pronouncing “Oute”, which in Shougi is the expression for “check” or “checkmate”. However the way he says “oute” ends up also being read as “Ote” or “Hand”, as in the dog giving him it’s paw like when a master instructs a dog to “give them their paw”. I tried to have him say “Check-Mate” as if he wants the “mate” of that dog to “check” his win.)

29.
Ta-chan: SIT!!
SFX: Peta
Jane: That seems stupid.
Ta-chan: Hehe, I won again. This game is simple.
Helen: Isn’t Ta-chan smart perhaps? He’s really quick to understand. If he were to undertake education that were done accurately, wouldn’t he become a splendid society man—
Helen: Then, let’s do this once more. I won’t lose this time.
SFX: Bachi bachi bachi bachi bachi
Ta-chan: OK, come on!!

30.
Ta-chan: Hey, Helen-chan, whatis that?
Helen: A blackboard. I was thinking of teaching reading and writing to you, Ta-chan…
Helen: I think you truly are smart, Ta-chan. If you are taught accurately from my foundations, you’ll immediately understand reading and writing.
Jane: Puhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Jane: Aren’t you overimpossiblizing Ta-chan a bit?
Helen: If you were to say it, wouldn’t it be “overestimating”?
(TN: The bit here is a unique bit of language joke that seems a tad stupid when first read but is more interesting if you figure it out. The key word, which Helen ends up correcting Jane for saying incorrectly, is “kaikaburi”, which is close to the term of “kaikaburu” or “overestimating”. Jane ends up saying “kawakamuri”, which doesn’t really mean anything but isn’t quite gibberish, in that it ends up having a meaning of “it’s impossible on whether it’s a river”. Since the joke mostly seems to be tied to Jane mispronouncing “kaikaburi” into “kawakamuri”, I ended up making up the term of “overimpossbilizing” which shows intent but is ultimately wrong, sort of like the infamous “Me fail English, that’s unpossible” bit from “The Simpsons”…back when the show was still good)

31.
Helen: Do you know some word that begins with M?
Caption: Monkey
SFX: Tsuka tsuka
Caption: Monomorai (Sty)
(TN: This joke is essentially all based on what language Ta-chan is being taught in: Jane tries to teach Ta-chan in English, thus the interest in Etekichi for “Monkey”, but Ta-chan see the sty and points it out as a “Monomorai” or a “sty”, which begins with “M”…but in Japanese)
Helen: What begins with L…
Ta-chan: Jane’s panties.
Jane: Make a play out of that once.

32.
Narrator: As such, Helen-chan’s training continued with good perseverance.
Jane: You’ve come to read and write a bit. Here, read this book.
Ta-chan: How about I read skipping over words I don’t understand?
Ta-chan: It had already become hot. The skin had been peeled off XX. XX slowly entered in and moved up and down. The meat gradually lost firmness inside XX which had become hot and released a sweet scent… (haa haa haa)
Jane: Tentatively, that is a cookbook but.
(TN: It was sort of tough to explain how to make “that” work considering how Ta-chan is reading a cookbook like a porno…but I think I made it work somehow)

33.
Narrator: And so.
Ta-chan: Is that good? You are a lion.
Helen: Somehow Ta-chan seems happy.
Jane: He wants to pride to everyone that he’s come to write characters and is itching to do this.
Ta-chan: “Etekichi” is written as such.
(TN: Yeah, in English he writes down Etekichi as “Abnormal Sex Monkey”)
SFX: Gari gari

34.
Narrator: And so one day.
Ta-chan: I don’t forgive those who kill the animals of Africa!! I am the king of the jungle who protects the peace of Africa!!
SFX: Gatsu gatsu
Ta-chan: As such.
Hunter: Thank—you.
Jane: What’s he doing handing out business cards?
Narrator: He also came to write his name.

TN: I bet some of you probably got off by cookbooks but are afraid to admit it. (I never did BTW) Regardless, this chapter was a good one, if only in that we finally have a bit more development in Ta-chan's character in finally allowing him to learn how to read and write. That may not be too special to some, but in a way it is a major development for a guy raised by...um, Etekichi. (yeah, "Abnormal Sex Monkey" is a perfect name for him) The gags here were actually at the top of the game this time around, from the dog bits when playing shougi at the start to the business card at the end...and of course, Jane being just as screwed up with her home language as Ta-chan probably is.
