Summer: a time to relax and take in the world in many different ways than one thought possible. For Hiroshi, summer means he can experience a little bit of the natural world...but not in the way even he would think possible!

#192: Youkai Homestay

134.
Voice: Well—a homestay with a farm family
Top Caption: Summer Vacation: Homestay with a Farm Family
Middle Caption: Personal Experience Study in the Midst of Blessed Mother Nature
Hiroshi: Because it’s a good personal experience. Dad said I can go on my own.
Kyouko: That’s great—you’ll be far off from the hustle and bustle of the city and carefree in the middle of nature.
Katsuya: That’s filled with insects and fish.
Miki: Even the food is tasty—freshly pulled vegetables; freshly squeezed milk.
Nube: I’m going too—
Kyouko: You’re not going.
Hiroshi (narrating): As such, I, Hiroshi, departed to a farm family in the mountain recesses.

135.
Hiroshi: However…this ended up being an extremely surprising homestay.
SFX: Buooo…
Hiroshi: U—h, this air is delicious—if this is the place, I’ve wanted to be here all along.
Hiroshi: ……Those farmer people. They should be coming to pick me up but…
SFX: Byuuuu

136.
Hiroshi: Wa~~
Hiroshi: Hi—gya—wa—
Hiroshi: Uh…u—h. Huh? This is…
Hiroshi: !

137.
Hiroshi: Uwaaa, a youkai!!
Hiroshi: Hi…
Hiroshi: Waaa~~I’m up in this tall tree…

138.
Hiroshi: Damn you—I’m Hiroshi of Nube’s class! I’m not scared of some—youkai! What will you do!?
SFX: Sa—
SFX: Kuru
SFX: Dosu!
Hiroshi: ?
SFX: Goso goso
SFX: Ton ton gutsu gutsu ju—
Hiroshi: ?
SFX: Ta
Hiroshi: It’s a lie, an absolute lie—

139.
Hiroshi: Eh…I…I’m eating that?
SFX: Zui
Hiroshi: Wh…why are you keeping an eye on me…I…I’ll eat it. It’ll be fine if I eat. Uuuuh, this strange meal…
Hiroshi: N, it’s tasty.
Hiroshi: What is it, it’s extremely—tast—y. (These ingredients anyhow) (to himself) Its face is dreadful but it may be a quite good youkai.
Hiroshi: ?
Hiroshi: The bones of a child…!?
SFX: Sasa
Hiroshi: Did it ultimately eat the child…?

140.
Hiroshi: If…if I ultimately don’t somehow run away…
SFX: Goso goso
SFX: Gashi
Hiroshi: Ugya~~
Hiroshi: Uwaaaa!
Hiroshi: Hiiii
Hiroshi: Help me~~it’s embawashing—what~~sort of fashion sense does it have?
(TN: The “embawashing” part was an intentional misspelling considering Hiroshi mispronounces “hazukashii” as “hazuka ‘P’”, probably due to a certain aspect of his “outfit”)
SFX: Giro
Hiroshi: Ah, I…I’m sorry……Uwa~~it’s cool. They don’t sell this in Harajuku.
(TN: “Harajuku” refers to a section of Tokyo in the Shibuya Ward notable as a fashion capital of the world due to its street fashion)

141.
Hiroshi: Wa! Ju…just a moment!
SFX: Gui
Hiroshi: Wa----!!
Hiroshi: Wa…wa!? (to himself) A…amazing—is this due to the mino!?
(TN: A “mino” is a straw raincoat worn in older times or rural areas of Japan. The term may probably be known to some due to the Japanese word “minomushi”, which is Japanese for “bagworm” due to the similar style of “coating” they use for their larval stage or, in the case of females, their entire lives)
Hiroshi: Amazing--! Hahaha, interesting—it’s a youkai item.
SFX: Boko
SFX: Bun!
Hiroshi: Wa!

142.
Hiroshi: Wa, wa, amazing—(to himself) this, I’m certain is the power of the gourd…
SFX: Garugaruto! | Bi—n
Hiroshi: Ahaha…interesting—
Hiroshi: ….Though when I was playing, it completely became night. Will I be staying in here tonight…it seems like it isn’t a bad youkai. Oh brother, this isn’t a farm; this has come to be a youkai homestay.

143.
SFX: Kokekokko
Hiroshi: I must go back today. Everyone will be worried.
Hiroshi: Wa—hey, hey.
SFX: Byu
SFX: Pi~~~…
Hiroshi: U…uwa, a lot of animals have gathered…
Hiroshi: They’re not attacking; nor are scared. Is this youkai power too? Fufu, they’re cute. They like me.
Hiroshi: ?
SFX: Zui

144.
Deer: Well, that’s an embarrassing—form.
Monkey: Isn’t he stupid--? Look, he put his penis in a gourd.
Boar: He decided to be an idiot. Look at that non-intelligent face.
Bear: Hey, this is a happy event.
Hiroshi: Uga~~!
Hiroshi: Heh, this hood can understand the words of animals. Interesting—
Narrator: The youkai came up with strange items one after another.
Caption: Bear-Hand
Narrator: And Hiroshi was delighted.
Caption: Insect-summoning lamp

145.
Caption: Will-o-Wisp Fireworks.
Narrator: Amidst these achievements, many days passed…
Mr. Tateno: That Hiroshi, where did he go?
Policeman: They have been a general mobilizations of local police and villagers and they have been searching but…
Nube: It’s alright: Hiroshi is alive.
Kyouko: Divide the labor and let’s search the forest.
Voices: Hiroshi---! Hiroshi---!!

146.
Nube: Hiroshi--!!
SFX: Zaza
Hiroshi: You’re~~noisy~~don’t worry—I’m alive—I’ve just had a homestay at a youkai’s place for a bit.
Nube: Gya~~haha
Miki: Wh…what’s that appearance?
Kyouko: Ahi ahi
Nube: It…it’s an extremely—nice youkai. It is full of knowledge of interesting things and.
Nube: But…
Nube: !?

147.
Nube: Hiroshi!
SFX: Beri
Hiroshi: Eh!?
Kyouko: Kyaaa!
Nube: You’ve been bathing in youki every day, eating cooking with drugs in it that was made by a youkai and have been changing into a youkai day by day.
Hiroshi: Uwaa~~no way—
Nube: Has it been making company with you…
Hiroshi: That’s~~
SFX: Su
Kyouko: Kyaaa
Miki: Huger boobs than mine…
Nube: Is that it?

148.
Nube: Hiroshi, that’s called Yamaonna; it’s a brutal youkai that eats humans and causes harm. It’s good that it’s gone without eating up to now…
(TN: The youkai “Yamaonna” is simply a translation for “Mountain Woman”; it shouldn’t be confused with the same kanji “Yamame”, which is the Japanese name for the Seema or “Masu Salmon” (Oncorhynchus Masou))
Hiroshi: Huh!?
Yamaonna: Gyaaaa!!
Nube: Namu!
SFX: Baaaaa…
Yamaonna: Gyau!
Nube: Yamaonna…it shouldn’t be showing feelings outside its own child. You were planning on eating him afterwards.
SFX: Giri giri…
Hiroshi: It’s own…child!?

149.
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan: Return to no…
SFX: Guo
Voice: Hold on!!
Nube: !!
Nube: Stupid…even if it doesn’t hurt your body physically, the Oni no Te when it attacks is bathed in a powerful aura and is dangerous!
Hiroshi: Gu…

150.
Hiroshi: It’s…child has died recently…
Nube: What?
Hiroshi: With that, I was made into its own child. Since I don’t have a mother either…I understand its feelings.
Hiroshi: I’m sorry…but I don’t want to stop being human—I’m sorry…I can’t become your child…

151.
Hiroshi: Even if you change them into a youkai, can you lead away an honest, good child?
SFX: Su…
Hiroshi: …Thank you. It’s been fun.
Hiroshi: Mother.

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#30: Rokudou Rinne

All souls, after their physical body dies, lodge in another physical body and will be reborn. This is called “Rinne”, one of the important doctrines of Buddhism.

When a soul is reborn, the place of rebirth has six varieties. They are titled as “Rokudou” and these six are:
1. Ten; 2. Ningen; 3. Shura; 4. Chikushou; 5. Gaki; 6. Jigoku

Where you are reborn is decided by the good and bad deeds of a previous life, they can’t be chosen yourself. Escaping the wheel of Rinne and gaining eternal, immortal life is the final objective of Buddhism. The process for arriving there will be omitted, since it varies by each sect and is difficult. This time, the best thing to do is ask a priest of a temple when you go to visit a grave.

(TN: A few things: the name of this entry, and the contents for the next chapter, is really tough to speak of in translation, so I was forced to keep it in Japanese as it stands. But to go over it generically to understand:
-“Rokudou” refers to the “six desire realms” which exist in Buddhist cosmology, which one can be reborn into. These six realms are: God (Deva/Tendou); Human (Manussa/Ningendou); Jealous God (Asura/Shuradou); Beast/Animal (Tiryagyoni/Chikushoudou); Hungry Ghost (Preta/Gakidou) and Hell (Naraka/Jigokudou)
-“Rinne”, also known as “Samsara” in Sanskrit, is the continuous cycle of birth, life, death and reincarnation as found not just in Buddhism but in many Eastern religions, including Hinduism, Bon, Jainism, Sikhism and so on. It is stated in Buddhism that the moment of “death” in one being leads to the moment of “conscious life” in another, thus starting the next movement in the cycle. In Buddhism, this ends with the attainment of moksha, in order to gain the path of enlightenment. It is also notable that doing bad in one life leads to one descending on the path, while a good life improves the position one will be in the next life)

TN: This was an interesting chapter that brought up a lot of interesting ideas and concepts about Hiroshi's own lack of holding a mother and the treatment that he did get from Yamaonna even without her knowing as such. Somehow it did make some sense that the creature's child was what died and that it wanted Hiroshi to replace it...but somehow it got a bit confused with the whole aspect that everyone "thought that Yamaonna takes in kids in general and raises them so it can eat them...even though Hiroshi was turning into a youkai being raised by the thing". It is tough to say whether or not Hiroshi was intended to be with the creature or it just took him being a random boy in the middle of nowhere, but he did get sort of the love he never had from it due to his mother dying young...though some of what is considered "love" was strange...like the outfit he wore that gave him all those weird powers. I doubt anyone really wants to wear a gourd on that anyway. Besides...the chapter was easy to translate and probably the easiest chapter I've had to deal with for a while.
