Might I suggest a weaker alternative to "shit"? Crap, damn, dammit, OMG... but not "shit", sweetie. Kuso means feces, but it's not as vulgar as the term "shit"...
tonikaku, Improving, you are, uhum, yes. :tem
Theheee~ thanx :tem
Isn't "kuso" that cute little poo-cartoon?? =D
Yeah, I though about "dammit" though imo "shit" is closer to kuso...
Ok, changing it~ ^^;
Arigatou gozaimasu~ :tem
I'm not sure there's really any great objective way to measure a word's vulgarity. Censorship is one thing you can potentially use though. Coming from an American perspective, "shit" is, for the most part, always censored on broadcast television. On the other hand, "dammit", while certainly avoided in a large number of contexts, doesn't tend to be censored as often.
In the case of "kuso", while it's an "off-color" word, and thus not appropriate in a large number of contexts, it is never censored in Japan. In fact, there aren't any expletives in Japanese that receive censorship on television.
In the end, I guess I can only say that the level of vulgarity that words have is a fairly subjective subject and one that is certainly culturally dependant.
Well, I think the fundamental difference is "where the evil lies" which is what varies from culture to culture. In Japan, the evil lies in how you use the word, while on this side of the Pacific (Nihongaeri's and mine), the evil lies in the word itself.
Take the word "Anata". So it means you, but it could constitute an insult given the right set of circumstances, because it's direct. Then again, it can also mean "honey", "dear" - a term of endearment for your spouse. Say the same word to different people, and you change the entire meaning.
Notice too how chimpo is only censored in a sexual context.
Where we live (yes, Mexico is the same), words are intrinsecally vulgar. So "fuck" means "fuck", and you can't very well use it on peers without provoking them, unless there's a mutual understanding that "that's how we talk between us".
When I write "this is fucking" crazy, the only reason why (most) people don't mind is because it's never directed at them. The point is that the word is still "bad", regardless of the context, it's just that we don't mind that it's bad.
Censors and more conservative elements of society *will* mind, however, and at the present you can't imagine any movie with the word "fuck" getting anything other than an R rating, no matter how innocent it is (see: My Cousin Vinny). "Shit" will probably earn you a PG 13 rating, at the very least.
Great work!!
