Recently turned into an anime with two episodes out and a third on the way soon, I decided that the manga itself was also pretty cool. The art is reminiscent of Hellsing. The story is set in Paris, France, 1753, and revolves around destroying The Psalms who gain their power by writing poems in the blood of virgins/nuns and the like. Pretty cool.

Why...

Why do they write poems

It's because of the poetry in maiden's blood...

Poems...

And in return they bestow upon le Poete a mysterious power...

Monsieur...

Sure, we'll say that.

Considering you certainly are missing a lot for a member of le Secret.

Er... Don't say that, your Majesty.

I'm the one who has to go through embarassment because of this.

Page 043
ふん
Hmm.

Well, my servant and friend.

座れ
Sit.

And give the white horse its feed.

There's not much information you'd want to hear though...

The sixth Poete to show his face here in Paris is Vermov Toland.

A graduate of Paris University.

He was a philosopher who produced anti-royalty and anti-church manuscripts...

But his soul was already taken over by the Poems.

He was becoming a gargoyle.

Le Poete was wounded, and is currently on the run...

Page 044
The poem was recovered by Sphinx.

She is currently disposing of it as is customary.

Good.

他には?
Anything else?

Page 045
The six letter anagram PALMSS is the same as in previous incidents,

Members of le Secret are currently deciphering it.

... Hmph.

The obvious connection is PSALMS, like the ones from the Bible.

Next is PALMSS... the leaf of a palm... and the future...

未来?
The future?

This Poete carved letters in the girl's hand.

PALMIT... In other words,

The future, in palm reading.

I call upon the blood of this saint! Compose the way to revolution

through the path of destruction. O' Pilgrim, grasp thee thy palm leaf!

That was his poem.

Page 046
A future of ruin... The promise of revolution...

Quite the comical poem.

PALMSS could also mean pilgrim.

Pilgrims would bring home a palm branch as proof of their pilgrimage.

And a palm leaf...

It is a symbol of triumph.

The triumph of the revolution?

Or is it...

The triumph of royalty?

I don't know.

But...

Prophecies have brought the church near collapse before...

Rome, and the Catholic Church.

Page 047
200 years ago... There was a similar collaborative poem in Italy as well.

And when the poem was complete... one of the meanings of PALMSS, "rift" occurred...

The church was split between the Puritans and the Protestants...

Rome was burned...

And the influence of the Pope was diminished... No?

In the beginning was the Word... However,

D'Eon, do you believe this poem?

Of course not!

I only believe in the teachings of Catholicism.

Page 048
You were the one who put together the evidence that the Pope was dealing in dark magics.

Thanks to you, France has a strong position against Rome.

Well, it was just a dangerous hobby for the Pope.

Nothing to do with Catholicism.

Does your Majesty believe it...

詩を
The poem?

フッ
Hah.

Humans truly are the result of one of God's comical poems...

God made me the King of France at five,

and threw me into this breeding ground of

conspiracy and languor.

I merely...

Enjoy God's bad taste.

Page 049
There are those who are powerless against their desires.

Your Majesty...

I know.

Deal with the fleeing Poete.

Protect France from the poems of destruction, D'Eon.

Sir!

... Umm.

I was wondering about your... promise to make me a dragoon?

It's still a promise.

Your services to le Secret cannot be made public.

Page 050
You promised.

Don't go dying of syphilis or something anytime soon.

You go too far, but it's merely a drop in the bucket.

Should I have called your sister, Sphinx, instead?

She does things on whims just as you do, your Majesty.

She won't sit here and obediently hand over information.

ふん
Heh.

I look forward to the work...

Of you two siblings.

A devoted brother... And a sister out for vengeance against poems...

Siblings of one flesh... No?

I don't know if the white horse needs feed or someone to talk to...

So he didn't... make you a dragoon this time either, eh?

Your services are all for nothing, no Monsieur D'Eon?

I just can't understand it, I'm always so busy too...

Page 052
Ugh...

Ah...

Monsieur D'Eon!?

Did you bring what I asked you to...

Robin...?

はい
Yes.

Everything is prepared.

I'll have to borrow a room in the royal court. (alt. "in la Cour")

We must hurry and prepare.

She...

She's coming soon...!

I got this much just from tips.

Chaperoning for a dinner party really brings in the money.

It sure does.

Huh?

What's this...

Where's the night guard?

変だな
That's odd.

Eh...?

Page 054
Uh...!

Ugh!?

He's...

He's dead...!

Give it back...

Page 055
My soul...

My poem...

Give it back...

Give me my "psalm" back!!!

!!

You who are blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh.

The Eve born from my breast...

A maiden killed by poetry...

D'Eon de Beaumont's most beloved.

Come, Nell.

I leave everything else to you, Robin.

The Poem is healing me...

The Poem is comforting me...

What a filthy Poem.

I won't ruin the psalm of a Poete

while he's dining at a table of crimson!!

Heh.

You're finally here...

Page 065
Your Poem,

will end tonight.

You usurper of poetry.

Page 066

Crrk!

Hahaha.

Hahahaha!

は!
Hah!

Hahaha!

Of course, my Poem is now complete!

Page 069
By the glory of my Poem,

I have been given immortality!

The Poem is mightier than the sword!

Because Its nature is symbolic.

Page 070
*ghhh*

Die by your own blade!

Page 071
It's useless!

Guh!

What a dull poem.

That won't even get close to taking my life.

Page 072
Idle talk... what can you do with a broken sword?

Your blood...

Shall be consecrated by my Poem!

You are the one who's blood will be consecrated.

In recompense for the ladies you sacrificed.

Page 073
償い?
Recompense?

Hahaha.

These women have no reason to feel bitter for I am grateful to them.

Every one of them resisted at first...

As the Poem progressed they started begging me to take their blood!

Tete Blade!

Page 074
Hear my wrath!

ククク
Heheheh.

So you're drawing out your own blood... Well then,

I will show you the pleasure of having your blood turned to poetry!

The Poem will not perish...

To compose a poem in your blood...

Page 085

I know, I know.

She's gone...

Monsieur D'Eon!!

Whoa!

Hurry up and get ready!

Seriously, Robin...

Didn't I just finish my mission a moment ago?

And I was just standing there for a tiny bit.

Then you're prepared for Monsieur le Chief who'll give you some hell for that moment of rest.

What about me?

Hm?

You can take this post over for your second half of the hundred pages if you need it.
This looks like a cool manga i'd like to try typesetting it if you'd let me, when it's ready?

poète - I like it.

I think it was already in the list for scanlation at some point or other by the Vagabond team. Just kind of waiting on my translations. They could take a while because seriously, this looks like it may be one of the hardest things I've ever considered translating.

I dont mind that the vagabond people are doing this since they have free time and stuff but if this is going to be a ko-scans thing, i do need to know about it before hand.

No idea really, it's up to Siedhr/Devin who will be doing it, this just happened to be a good place to save the translation and give those who are interested a preview.

Yah, sorry I've just seen this now. I took a little break from the action to do some studying and regulate my biorhythm (sleep at 12 my time).

I'm gonna catch up with you on messenger, zindryr. I'd like to see some raws, talk to the rest of the crew, but it looks pretty cool so we're quite probably gonna do it. I'm also going to proof this soon.

Er, I wouldn't proof it until the chapter is fully translated. And I'm only halfway done now.

hey!! i didnt know there was a manga at all. i just got introduced to the anime last week when i randomly saw the title on tokyotosho. i told myself this sounds like a samurai show (chevalier- knight) and it reminds me of blood+ so let me check it out. and it was great. although episode 2 isnt subbed yet.

is there a place to get the manga- i am going to get into this if it will continue? or has it already ended mangawise?

The manga is still going so far as I know. There are currently two volumes out, but that's all the information that I have.

There is currently no place to get the manga, hence why I am translating it, but if you wait a few days to a week this translation will appear on a scanlation available for all to download. Of course, I really need to fix up the script a lot before that happens.

I haven't managed to take a look at the anime yet, but I do plan on it.

Oh god, I'm going to feel your pain pretty soon. So much text to proof. Here's a resource I found about the real chevalier D'Eon http://www.beaumontsociety.org.uk/Chevalier.html

Just write it down.

Does this mean: I can write it down because I practiced enough to do it right. Sort of: It's time for the real thing. The sketch above is like a draft or a practice? I'm asking because sketch makes me think about drawing, not writing and these two lines are a bit confusing logically-wise.

No idea. Is this the phonetic transcription of his name? Vermov - could be from verme, worm. Tolan is apparently an Irish name http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/tolan-family-crest.htm I chatted a bit with a native French speaker (who knows a bit of Japanese) on irc today and he suggested Ramaud Toland or Vameau Toland.

I don't get this.

As you shouldn't, it was a mistranslation of which I have just fixed. Grandiloquent is what the chapter title should be. It's not a very common word, but go look it up on dictionary.com for a meaning. Basically someone who uses lots of big words and comes off as pompous.

Quote by Siedhr :
Chat? And is this a chapter title also?

Yep, chat. It is an omake where Robin and D'Eon talk about France in the 18th century.

Quote by Siedhr :
Does this mean: I can write it down because I practiced enough to do it right. Sort of: It's time for the real thing. The sketch above is like a draft or a practice? I'm asking because sketch makes me think about drawing, not writing and these two lines are a bit confusing logically-wise.

Well, I was simply using what the Japanese provided. He came out and said sketch in the Japanese, specifically.

Quote by Siedhr :
Those who pray for the rain to continue, and love the dark and the strange delight me.
Assembly? Is it a religious institution? And by righteous do you mean right as in right or wrong?
Those who have an eternal spirit - How about you tell me the literal meaning of this line and the entire poem, maybe I can help shape it into form.
Again, see above.
For the road through destruction to revolution! - Ehhh, hard to realize what this means.
The world is as red as a bed of flowers! - it doesn't say what kind of flowers?

Will get back to you on this later today, as the whole section needs a short retranslation. You'll also most likely have to bear with some of it as it will be in somewhat poetic English, the best I can do.

Quote by Siedhr :

Eh, neither of those work really. The Japanese is Va-mahho, that double h right there giving the sense of ending with a 'v' or something of that sound, and the long a- meaning there is probably an 'r' in there. Of course, (and I heard this while watching the anime version), this character could be Russian. I think, we should go with Vermov Toland for now, and if we find out different later, go back and fix the chapter.

Quote by Siedhr :

A man who writes poetry in virgin's blood. - composing is the act of creation

And he is creating the poem. One composes poetry. That's how the phrase goes.

Quote by Siedhr :
The John thing, should it be in the bubble or as a sidenote?

First time actually in the bubble, then we don't refer to it again.

Quote by Siedhr :
It could be Saint-Patoul or Patoule. Is there any other translator who knows French that might give a hand? Maybe Salpadour or something, gah.

I guess Salpadour for now.

Quote by Siedhr :
How about: "Le Poete" has already escaped. Since you're going with the French word, why not use a French article?

Why not. Oh, and since we're using the French article, (this applies to everytime we use the French article), we're going to treat it like a regular word and leave it uncapitalized unless it's at the beginning of the sentence.

Quote by Siedhr :
How about "Really!" or "Honestly!".

Honestly.

Quote by Siedhr :
You've got some nerve snoring so loudly!

Eh, mine sounds like better English in my opinion. You have some nerve to blank something.

Quote by Siedhr :
Wake up completely, imbecile! / Wake up already, imbecile!

How about: "Wake yourself, imbecile!"

Quote by Siedhr :
You missed the bubble before this one (two kanji).

Will get this when I get home.

Quote by Siedhr :
It doesn't really look like you're sorting though.

I guess, but the Japanese was just a statement with a question mark at the end too, I was trying to mimic that.

Quote by Siedhr :

"It's because of the poetry written in virgin's blood..." Maybe. Rofl, how do they know they're virgins, do they check?

How about maiden then?

Quote by Siedhr :

As usual?

Being le Secret du Roi he has been there before, hence the 'as usual'.

Quote by Siedhr :
I think we should keep the latin and put the translation in the sidenotes.

Whatever you think, the Japanese just happens to be in the box with the latin, and I was translating what it should be.

Quote by Siedhr :

He was a philosopher who wrote pamphlets against royalty and the church...

The Japanese wrote out manuscript beside the phrase, so I was thinking we should use that word as well.

Quote by Siedhr :

The poem was recovered by the Sphinx.

Not 'the' Sphinx, that is her name, so it is merely Sphinx.

Quote by Siedhr :

Next is PALMSS... the leaf of a palm tree... and the future... - I don't get the connection between the palm tree and the future.

Palm reading, perhaps? That's the only logical connection I could make.

Quote by Siedhr :
It as in the royalty or the church?

The church, though I guess we should specify even if the Japanese doesn't, replacing 'it' with 'the church'.

"Prophecies have brought the church near collapse before..."

Quote by Siedhr :

And the influence of the Pope was diminished... Right?

I'm leaving the 'no?' in. It's closer to what a French person would say in that situation, and most English speakers would understand it as such.

Quote by Siedhr :

You were the one who put together the evidence that the Pope was dabbling with black magic.

I personally like the phrase dark magics more, because it is unspecific. Whereas black magic feels like a specific thing.

Quote by Siedhr :

So he didn't... make you be a dragoon this time either, eh?

How about: So he didn't... make you a dragoon this time either, eh?

Quote by Siedhr :
Your services are all for nothing, right, Monsieur D'Eon?

Same 'no' as mentioned above.

Quote by Siedhr :
?

That was just me saying that they're not really making any sound, it's more like the sound of your breath stopping in your throat, it's hard to describe that in text so I imagined it would be easier to just not worry about the bubbles, take out the little Japanese characters, and put ... etc in there.

Quote by Siedhr :

"I won't ruin the Psalm of a poet..." Won't ruin? Isn't that what she's about to do?
...while he's dining at a table of crimson!

These two go together. And yes, she says literally this: (I) will not destroy/wreck/ruin Psalm of Poet that is at a dinner table decorated in red.

Quote by Siedhr :

That won't even get you close to taking my life.

She's saying 'that' and referring to the fact that what he did won't take her life, not that he won't. Hence why my original phrase is closer, and still perfectly fine in English.

Quote by Siedhr :

Payback for the ladies you've sacrificed.Payback?

I like recompense more, it fits more with how wordy the original text is.

Quote by Siedhr :

Well... Since you're going to draw out your blood by yourself.
I will twist the pleasure of having your blood used for poetry out of you! - This could use some rephrasing. I'm not even sure where to start. Who's pleasure is it?

These two go together, and refer to his previous line where the 'women' were the ones enjoying their blood being drawn.

How about: "So you're drawing out your own blood... Well then,"
"I will show you the pleasure of having your blood turned to poetry!"

Quote by Siedhr :

I don't really like dispatch. How about: Release this guiding beast! Or Unleash this guiding beast!

Dispatch means to kill in this circumstance, and it fits fairly perfectly.

Quote by Siedhr :

What is the exact meaning? He'll be watching her while he's in hell or he'll be waiting for her in hell?

It means he will be waiting to see her pretty little face in hell.

Quote by Siedhr :
To write a Poem in your blood...

Again, one composes poetry.

Quote by Siedhr :
There are no periods in Poems... - Does she means the poem never ends?

Pretty much.

Quote by Siedhr :

Umm, pardon, pardon, pardon... - Since it's the same word in French as well.

Er, he's thinking of an excuse, not saying excuse me.

Quote by Siedhr :
He won't cut me some slack no matter what I say.

He's actually talking about the Chief not going along with any lie that he could make up.

And done. I didn't point out my reasoning for some of the changes later on if I had already done so once before.

Yes, that makes sense. We'll do that.

Quote:

I'm not too crazy about it, but it's okay I guess.

Quote:
How about maiden then?
I like maiden better and I think it fits with the era.

Quote:
The Japanese wrote out manuscript beside the phrase, so I was thinking we should use that word as well.
Yes, I understand. I used pamplets because that's how those kind of things were named during the era.

Quote:

Black magic, to my knowledge is not a specific kind of magic, but merely a name for forbidden practices that harm people, are made using blood and other unsavory items. And it was used in the era as such, as a generic term, though all magic was forbidden by the church during that time regardless of what kind it was. Merely saying magic would be enough, though we should use either dark/black because people might not know this. Your choice, but it should be magic, not magics.

Quote:

The reason I don't like the word is the fact that it doesn't sound impressive enough for this release phrase. Not antiquated enough, regardless of its original meaning. I get what you're saying though and in the end it's your decision.

Agreed with the rest.

Regardless, they literally wrote out manuscript. We could go with pamphlets, but I'd prefer it if we used manuscript.

You haven't read enough fantasy books. Dark magics is pretty much a set term that covers a wide array of things. And yes, they do use 'magics' with the 's' at the end. We'll take it off, but I'm just saying I've seen it before a number of times.

Dispatch is a fairly old way of saying you 'kill' someone. It occurs in a lot of books focused around a more medieval era that I've read, so people would be used to it. Unleash and the other one aren't as specific in meaning when used in this context.

I did the poem just now.

Quote:
Those who pray for a neverending rain and those who love the dark and the strange delight me. They will not stand for the assembly to find that which is righteous and good. Their spirit is eternal as they sing out against the law. God has left us, God has left us. Tonight, I call upon the blood of this saint! Compose the way to revolution through the path of destruction. O' Pilgrim, grasp thee thy palm leaf! Fling thyself into the blazing oven. Wed thyself to the flames! The world is as a bed of red flowers!

Be content!

You have to read it all as a block, as that is the only way it makes sense. If anything confuses you I can explain it as I'm pretty sure I understand it now.

Also, that's a pretty literal go at it.

Oh and we did forget one thing.

Got it. Exusiai, Archai, Dynamis, Kyriotetes.

Everything seems to be in order. I think you should replace "virgin" with "maiden" where it appears (or we could do it when we typeset) and also capitalize Poem (again, we can do this when we typeset if you don't feel like hunting it down).

Could you add this where the line is, so that I don't forget? I'll make a sidenote or a translator's note if it's longer out of it.
