View Full Version : Favorites Dogs in Manga/Anime

December 05, 2010, 10:18 AM
We have a thread for anime cats (http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65961), so why not one for dogs? :D

Likewise, what dogs have you seen in manga/anime? Have a favourite? :)

Here's mine:
Inuki from X/1999
He is the inugami that follows the inugami master Nekoi Yuzuriha from Mitsumine shrine. Only Yuzuriha and other people involved in the end of the world can see Inuki. Inuki can shapeshift into anything Yuzuriha wants, so in battle she usually makes him shapeshift into weapons. He is a really loyal dog and would sacrifice himself to save Yuzuriha if the situation calls for it... I could say more but there would be major spoilers :x

Well, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin and it's sequels are all about dogs. Pretty generic yet fun 80's shonen adventure, where main characters are dogs. A pack of wild dogs roams the mountain areas of Japan, figthing evil usually. It btw was serialized in Jump during it's so called "Golden Age", which is quite a feat as itself.

Few my favorites characters from the series:

Kai Brothers

My favourite dog in anime/manga is Peace from Bakuman.

He's the large fluffy one. I love large dogs in general and Peace is just adorable!

There's Beck (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_04LgjvbALMo/SRjHgkwDzaI/AAAAAAAAADI/hDjmH_vuWXk/s320/beck+dog.jpg) from BECK. He may not be the prettiest looking dog... but at least his name was adapted by his owner's band. :tem

Yeah, he doesn't get a lot of focus in the series, but he is indeed a dog. :p

Has Sadaharu (http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OZKHmToGSbLMvM:http://i31.tinypic.com/2n24mf7.jpg&t=1) been mentioned? He's the best giant alien space dog in manga history.

Tegami Bachi contains some dogs, which serve as "Dingos" to the letter bees:

I love the loyalty that Bolt has for Aria. It's too bad that he can't help out a lot because of his old age. He's always there to act as a support though, and it means a lot.

You sir, have good memory. *applause* There was also Saruu the pug from Sabaody Archipelago. (You had a typo in your link so I fixed it.)

I realise a lot of series have inugami, like X/1999 I mentioned in the OP, and now I'm reading Kekkaishi and there are two inugami serving the main characters. That's Hakubi on the left with the girl (Tokine) and Madarao on the right with the boy (Yoshimori) :tem

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru

Josephine. (http://anime-online.tv/upload/pjs/2a2fa7db34ed72d35e8f3ffb89d78bbd.jpg) Yes, I know she doesn’t look like a dog, but she is. There is even a whole episode dedicated to her in the anime.

Josephine: The Arashiyama family's pet dog, resembling a Japanese Raccoon Dog. In the anime, she ends all of her sentences with "poko".

Inubaka: Crazy for Dogs series has many dogs and puppies! The art done for these pets are really good (: The storyline is okay, kind-of really random. It's a pretty fluffy manga series.
All alone except for her loyal mutt Lupin, 18-year-old Suguri moves from the countryside to the big city to find a job and a new life. In her first job at a pet store, she meets an assortment of quirky dogs and even stranger owners. What she lacks in retail experience, she makes up for through her natural rapport with all things wagging and fluffy!

I can’t believe nobody has mentioned him yet :)…well…he is not a full dog…but still…

Inuyasha from Inuyasha

InuYasha is the protagonist of the series, aged at 17 in appearance and mindset. Born to a dog demon father and human mother, InuYasha is a half-dog demon who initially wants to use the power of the Sacred Shikon Jewel to become a full-fledged demon like his brother, Sesshomaru.

And of course…

Sesshomaru from Inuyasha

Sesshomaru is Inuyasha's older half-brother. As a full-blooded demon, he is extremely powerful.

Heen (http://www.onlineghibli.com/howls_castle/char/heen.gif) The asthmatic dog from Howl's Moving Castle.

Heen is a small and very ancient white and brown dog who appears only in the movie. He works for Madame Suliman as an errand runner and an inconspicuous, though unreliable, spy.

I like how Sophie mistakes him for Howl in the movie, I thought it was funny. :D

I don't know if wolves are allowed, but here's some dogs or wolves:

FMA: the girl and her dog, which the dad then joins them together (HK "wipes" his eyes, I got something in my eye just now, uh huh!).

Elfen Lied, that's when I stopped watching it... I hate how dog brutality-death is used to symbolize evil... it's good for symbolizing evil... but I can't watch the dog get abused or killed-murdered... lots of story mediums use this theme symbology... sighs... (The Butterfly Effect movie, the psycho brother pours gasoline on the puppy and then the bag, puts the puppy in the bag, seals of the bag, and then lights it on fire... burning the puppy alive... you learn later though that he's "psycho" because he watched his sick pedo dad have his sister and his best friend make out... as his dad video taped and joined in with his own daughter... the movie has some awesome sci-fi stuff, but it's not a pleasant movie at all... it's been tamed down though with much of its more disturbing content removed for tv viewing, compared to its content in the theatres when it had come out)

Princess Mononoko. the mother-god wolf, and her two sibling wolves.

Wolf's Rain, not much needs be said, as it's THEE anime series about wolves.

Endless Waltz (sequal movie for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing). very brief scene with dog (it gets killed). Heero Yuy: "How many times must I kill that girl and her dog?"

Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail. some scenes of a wolf to symbolize Roberta :D

Hellsing. Well, one of Alucard's forms-souls is that of a hellhound, lol.

Asobi ni Iku yo! An anime series that is a Parody of many things found within animes, it involves (busty) cat-girls & race (nekos) vs (busty) dog-girl & race. It's kinda funny and enjoyable, you might want to take a look at it, as it's fun and silly. yes it has the fan-service for us guys, but I think it has a lot more stuff that is for girls' enjoyment. it's cute!

Blood C: I'm calling it a dog, lol.

Blood+: there's an episode with a dog in it, lol

Phantom: Requiem of the Phantom. A dog is used to symbolize Zwei, and I think there's some brief scenes of dogs within it too.

Soul Eater: that werewolf guy. Also is the brief scene with the dog that was possessed by Medusa, which she then transfers herself into the girl's body.
