I‘ve been told that several people are planning to host games, so to avoid any problems like people cutting into each other‘s game signups and other things we may need a schedule of games.
For anyone who plans to host a game, you can either write in this thread for what month/day you‘re planning a game or edit it in the schedule yourself if you can.
Note that there‘s no limit to how many games can be had per month, but try not to have 2 games running at the same time.
Sign-ups!
To everyone who usually plays MG or those that don‘t want to miss signups, we‘re testing a new way to alert everyone to a new game instead of mass tags before each game.
All you have to do is go to>>this thread<<and press Watch on the top corner of the thread. I or a host will post there and notify everyone like this whenever a new game starts.
While hosting overall isn't necessarily hard, it's very easy to mess things up as we have seen plenty of times already. This naturally happens more often with newer hosts.
In order to get these new hosts familiar with how the game works behind the scenes and make it a smoother experience for everyone (no one wants a cancelled game!), we are establishing these sets of rules that follow the methods that have been used in the last 50 games:
-If it's your first time hosting, it's MANDATORY to have the help of someone that has hosted before. As long as they aren't banned, it doesn't matter if this person hosted twenty times or just once. This experienced host will be the "Main Host", while the new one assumes the role of "co-host".
-Tasks will be split in a rather equal manner so that the Main Host can keep things in check while the Co-host gets hands-on experience to learn properly.
-The Main Host has the final say when it comes to decisions (ideally, this won't need to be enforced heavily, it's mostly to avoid possible issues).
Once the game is over, the co-host can host on their own and even take the role of "experienced host" for a new host in need!
If Speed Mafia happens again when I’m a little less exhausted (), I’ll want another go.
My last thought before going to sleep for real was “Van and/or Pompom are Mafia”, for a silly reason. I made my “I fell asleep”-post here, no one reacted to it in like 20 minutes, then Xad comes back, likes it, and then a minute later Van and Pompom. Like “hey, we’re back from our Mafia talk”. But they killed me anyway so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yesterday we had our first iteration of a Speed Run Mafia Game. And.. well..
Here are a few of my thoughts about the process nonetheless, who knows, maybe it helps.
Out of the blue I thought we could do a speed run, I actually didn't think there would be enough people to participate.. but hey, fuck me right?
So without having anything prepared and being too busy IRL, I still went ahead and hosted the game.
First off, special thanks to @GrySun and @Farfalla helping me keep track of the votes. I did it too, but on a special pad for me solo. And a special thanks to @Emperor Spriggan for sharing his opening post codes etc. even though he was slow af
The game started later because of some IRL events and inexperience, and I did actually sort of forgot to PM the roles at first. Whatever.
Day/Night Phases
I tried to limit the Day/Night Phases to max. 30 minutes. Which is next to nothing in a fast-paced game.
The phases were a bit more than 30 minutes at a time because I had some mod-power problems at the start, and more mod-problems because they kept talking after the end of the day phase.. several times..
For a speed run I think this would be an excellent time, but it could be adjusted to anywhere between 30-60 minutes. This would probably still limited it to an one-night event. Longer than that will probably be to long for a SR game.
PLAYER ROLES
Roles should be as basic as they can get, I threw in some random 'basic' ones, but the balance should be handled gracefully, so not by the likes of me.
Definitely shouldn't use anything out of the ordinary, unless it can't really influence the game too much.. but what's the point in that then?
PREPARATION / HOSTING
I'm inexperienced as a host, this is only the second game I've hosted. The first game was several years ago and failed in the first or second night. This game was also an experiment more than anything else, so we could all get a sense of what these games could mean for MG.
DEFINITELY.. DEFINITELY prepare a lot in advance. Basically make all the post from start to end. Every single PM, Day/Night Starts Ends and more. The small amount of time doesn't really allow you to do those things in real-time, that either is going to drag the game (like last night) or will be an easy set-up for mistakes. Definitely go through all the possibilities and have them written down before hand.
If I didn't have Gry or Lala last night, I would've had a burn-out or shot myself, it's too much to do solo in this time-frame. A co-host (or helper at best) is definitely required. Even if it's just for counting votes.
AND DEFINITELY, NEVER EVER USE A (CONFUSING) THEME LIKE THIS IN A SPEED RUN GAME EVER AGAIN.
FOR THE SAKE OF FARFALLA'S EVERYONE'S MENTAL HEALTH.
If there are any other questions regarding my experience, just go ahead and ask.
@gnut and @Asako , thanks for invitation nd tagging me..but sorry,I may not be able to play this game. Because at times, i don't get time to come to MH lately.
The set swaps, while funny, were so utterly confusing. But I think Xad had it the worst, with having to send PMs to such a jumbled mess, shooting yourself in the foot kinda thing
It was entertaining but I still prefer normal games a lot more. The big positives:
The speed of the phases make sure there‘s constant activity and a pretty much uninterrupted game flow(with nights giving a nice break, albeit a bit long in this game)
It ends in a few hours, so you‘ll have closure on people‘s roles/the mafias/game outcome a lot faster. Interest doesn‘t drop over time like with bigger games.
Very fast and easy to setup for a host. And if you follow the rules with player number and make a more simplistic game then anyone could host a game. More complicated stuff should be left to more experienced hosts though.
But the speed is also kinda a negative thing. There‘s no time to really talk things through or defend yourself if a bandwagon happens. The game is much more reliant on luck since there‘ll hardly ever be a solid reason for a lynch, nor the time to build cases on people. Town is quite disadvantaged there, as mafia just need to not stick out much and play normally and if they‘re lucky all bandwagons will be on townies. It can also get pretty tiring fast-reading a bunch of posts that keep coming against the clock.
I can definitely see this being a nice mini-mafia game inbetween the bigger games every now and then, but best keep it a just-for-fun thing without expecting much from it, since it‘s an extremely „lite“ version of the usual games and many of the good parts of the bigger games aren‘t present or even possible in these games.
There there D:
Hope you don't think I got annoyed about the problems, I got annoyed about people trying to not admit them as problems.
But that's minor compared to being happy someone finally decided to test this model. I'm glad you once more stepped up to pull something regarding the MGs o/ It was really really fun and now we have another option to entertain ourselves with, which is also more casual and can happen more often (since it's common to see people longing to play but having to wait for a while until a host has more free time). So thx for that, Tommy o/
I actually liked the theme xD It was funny and you get used to it.
I agree with Gry saying the model gives us little space to discuss and make good calls, which compromises the townies more than other parties. Maybe that's another thing that made the mafia OP, and you couldn't know about it beforehand. And as I said that later I'd comment on not voting, then I'm doing it now: I think that giving a pass for people not to vote/post could be used as a strategy for the non townies to fly by (I'm not implying that's what happened in this game, but in the future it would be quite easy to fabricate excuses, specially when we have little time to judge those as players), and harms the uses of roles like the Bomb. Besides, considering people are aware they gotta act fast and constantly when they accept to take part in the game, I think it's reasonable to expect them to follow the other rules as well.
I think the fact that it was a "flawless" mafia victory is making the game appear more unbalanced than it was, to be honest. I wonder how opinions would have changed if even just one mafia member had died instead of only townies...
I didn't find the setup to be that much tipped in favour of the mafia, what with a Bomb, a PGO and a Hider to hinder us, coupled with a Mafia Det that had a lot of Regular Townies to wade through and a Boss we had little use for, as well as only two active roles we could have blocked with the Escort (one of which, the Hider, was pointless to block unless we also targeted her for the kill, meaning we had to know her role - and that would basically be a waste of a block and kill).
The time constraints weren't exactly nice and relaxing for us either - having to jump from trying to keep everyone alive at day and planning our moves at night without messing up somewhere, with no breaks allowed unless you wanted to miss something that you'd have to catch up on later, when every minute counts. Each phase lasting only thirty minutes also meant we barely had the time to coordinate and we needed to make snap decisions, and while I can't speak for the others, I mostly drew my conclusions about everyone from what I remembered off the top of my head instead of reading back in the thread as I'd normally do.
So, yeah. Before jumping to the conclusion that the mafia has a clear advantage with shorter phases, I think the reasonable approach would be to try out a few more similar setups to get a better idea whether the role balance for these kinds of quick games needs to be seriously overhauled with that approach in mind or not.
For what it's worth, I liked the fast-paced format. I think it makes for games that force both sides to focus a lot more on intuition and quick thinking (not just luck) rather than patience and careful analysis, and I find that to be a lot of fun. So thanks to @Xadyu for spending the time and effort to test this out, and I hope to play this again sometime
Allright, guys, what do you think about the game starting at april 5th or april 6th? Do you think it would be better for you than april 1st or 10th? Or is April 1st okay for you all? @Arjuna@gnut@Crescent_jinxgrace@Purity of Magi@Farfalla
