Scheduling

I‘ve been told that several people are planning to host games, so to avoid any problems like people cutting into each other‘s game signups and other things we may need a schedule of games.

For anyone who plans to host a game, you can either write in this thread for what month/day you‘re planning a game or edit it in the schedule yourself if you can.

Note that there‘s no limit to how many games can be had per month, but try not to have 2 games running at the same time.

MG Schedule 2023

Sign-ups!

To everyone who usually plays MG or those that don‘t want to miss signups, we‘re testing a new way to alert everyone to a new game instead of mass tags before each game.

All you have to do is go to >>this thread<< and press Watch on the top corner of the thread. I or a host will post there and notify everyone like this whenever a new game starts.

MG Schedule 2023
[Original Post]

While hosting overall isn't necessarily hard, it's very easy to mess things up as we have seen plenty of times already. This naturally happens more often with newer hosts.

In order to get these new hosts familiar with how the game works behind the scenes and make it a smoother experience for everyone (no one wants a cancelled game!), we are establishing these sets of rules that follow the methods that have been used in the last 50 games:

-If it's your first time hosting, it's MANDATORY to have the help of someone that has hosted before. As long as they aren't banned, it doesn't matter if this person hosted twenty times or just once. This experienced host will be the "Main Host", while the new one assumes the role of "co-host".
-Tasks will be split in a rather equal manner so that the Main Host can keep things in check while the Co-host gets hands-on experience to learn properly.
-The Main Host has the final say when it comes to decisions (ideally, this won't need to be enforced heavily, it's mostly to avoid possible issues).

Once the game is over, the co-host can host on their own and even take the role of "experienced host" for a new host in need!

Honestly guys we need to change this whole "inactive players get hostkilled" rule. Orange was basically just a 2 man team. Imagine this game with WYIS being inactive and getting hostkilled on day 2 as sole Doc. It just doesn't feel right to me. Can't we just make a rule that inactive players "get removed and a random person/fellow mafia member gets revealed what role the removed player had and can choose to get that new role in exchange for his old or if he wants to keep his old role? Like if Elu didn't had the time, the hosts could have offered the Orange Mafia to chose a member to change their role with the soon to be removed Mafia and obviously Erin would chose the Janitor role above the Mafia Bomb one. Same in case of WYIS being inactive, the host chose a random townie and send in a pm the role WYIS had with the question if he or she wants to keep or change her current role to the soon to be removed one. That would feel more fair to me then important or crucial roles getting taken out of the game which either the townies or mafias really wanted to keep. It is one thing if the townies get lucky and remove 3 opponents with a single day lynch and a whole other reason when the sole Janitor or Doc in the game gets hostkilled after a single night use.
The whole orange team issue is practically my fault to begin with, so I don't really see the problem with it.

But for the sake of the townies in the game, I'd like to change the inactive gets hostkilled rule as well. Though, the whole idea of someone getting the role of an inactive player needs some clarification. What if that player has a useless (like hider) or a dangerous one (like death miller) in the game? Would one really take it over his/her own role that he/she already likes? What about the mafia? The player inactive doesn't have a strong role to combat the town. Would they take it or have that person hostkill instead?

Don't see a point in changing that. I already think it's fine if someone has to bow out before the game starts or before they themselves post (pretty sure this has happened before), but the moment a player enters the fray, they're the only one who should be in that position IMO. Swapping a weak role for something more "important" or "powerful" doesn't work to me either. Whether you're aware of it or not, your role effects your play, and every role has a purpose as far as game balance goes.

Inactives have been a scourge since the game began, if fixing it was as simple as just giving it to some other person mid-game, this would have already happened.

I would put in the rule that Mafia Boss cannot be chosen to be replaced so if a Mafia Boss is inactive, well, that role is gone. But the change from guilty to innocent status is just too game-breaking.

Also I would put in the rule that the whole "removal and replaced" instead of "hostkill" only works for like the first 2-3 days aka what happened to you. If Somebody ends up inactive in day 5 and day 6, then he just gets hostkilled as the game has progressed for too long. But really if there is only one Doc in-game and that Doc gets hostkilled at day 2 instead of the Janitor aka you, then that would have turned the entire game around. Maybe the Hosts can create a List before the game of players who they believe are fine to get a right to chose the new role if randomly selected from said list. The Hosts know after all who got what and it would not make sense to ask a Det if he wants to become a Doc.

I don't mind hostkills if rules are broken or inactive late game, but inactive players from the start, which we nearly always have, can be done in a more elegant way to keep some of the roles in a little longer. I'm sure the Orange Mafia wouldn't have minded to change one of their roles to Janitor. Or "Death Miller" townie wouldn't had any problems being the Doc if WYIS had to be removed due being inactive for two days in a row in the beginning. So I think there is merit to make the whole hostkill business a bit less cut throat.

In it's current state, the lovers roles are just plain un-fun and shouldn't be used. Even plain townie, burden, and investigator are better because at then you don't need some other random you don't trust to keep you alive.Regardless, I wouldn't really have as big a problem being a lover if there was some way for me to know with more certainty that the role I got really was random.

Perhaps a page that can be posted via a URL to the specific game's randomizer (like strawpoll links except instead of voting it just gives you a role)--each player puts in their forum name to confirm they're on the list of players and to prevent re-rolls, then they get their randomize role (maybe with the specific role's info and/or entire "role card"). Since the player had to input their name to get the role, the hosts, on their end, can see the roster and what each player came up as.

If all I needed to do that was some C++ or Java then I would happily do it myself now, but obviously it needs to be on the internet and I know next to nothing about HTML or web development in general, although, there's a lot of similarities between languages so maybe it would be too much for me to learn... Anyhow, I'm just throwing the idea out there.

Well, I can't speak for any previous game I wasn't involved in, but I can assure you every role was randomized this time. No rerolls, either, since I believe making exceptions to that rule is fundamentally wrong - or, at the very least, I don't like it one bit. One of us shuffled the names and another shuffled the roles, then posted them together and that was it.

With the first point, instead, I completely agree. If Lovers were turned into third parties whose objective is only to win together, thus being "forced" to cooperate, I feel like they'd have a much longer life expectancy, and likely more fun trying to win too. The townie Lover wouldn't have any reason to reveal everything the mafia Lover told him if the latter died, either, since the town would still be his enemy (and he wouldn't find himself in an awkward situation if there was a Threesome Candidate who managed to save him...).

In the game Grysun hosted recently, i ended up as a Lover, and Gry specifically told us that he wanted us to win together, no betrayal allowed. We would win together or we would not win at all, regardless of us being townie or mafia respectively. That's how the lovers role should always be played imo.

If the Lovers had special "Lover actions" they would be more fun in my opinion, like a kill action, a revive potion or protection amulet. Or some sort of goal which makes it easier for them to "win", lie for example if they survive 3 nights they can just "run away" from the game and win that way, you know, the whole run away and elope thing. Or maybe if a Lover dies the other Lover gets two kill actions at once for one night (which would also keep the other Lover to stay quiet, expect you make those kills unblockable aka Strongman) or even a way to revive his beloved from the dead or something like that.

I've had the lover role a few times all those games ago and we always played to win. If there was a betrayal (which happened once or twice) it was because there was no saving the other at all. But then again, it was mutual.

Thanks Vand, Holt and Cres for hosting. I wish I could have at least poisoned someone and absorb their life energy but I fear I'll have to wait for the next time. Lover's can be a really cool role adding some nice twists. I'd honestly really like to see a game with just one mafia and maybe another 3rd killing party just to see the changed dynamics.

It can, but I think the Lovers role needs some changing, maybe Threesome candidate as well. Changing it so that they can only win together is a good start, but I think they could still use an ability of some kind, a killing ability should probably have some drawbacks or limitations though.

If I am Lover I will always play to win as one. I think it's been used a bit too much recently though. A bit like Mason it's not surprising anymore.
