Genre: Drama, Autobiographical, Gekiga

The life of a disillusioned mangaka without control, forced to stop drawing and find various odd jobs without much conviction, to feed his family...
Along with Tatsumi Yoshihiro, Tsuge Yoshiharu was one of the pioneers of the gekiga movement of the late 1950's and 1960's. Predating seinen, Gekiga was a rebellion against manga, then dominated by the children's comics of Tezuka Osama, Fujiko F. Fujio, Akatsuka Fujio, and Yokoyama Mitsuteru. Gekiga means "dramatic pictures", as opposed to the "whimsical pictures" of manga, classic gekiga drew on left wing politics, surrealism, psychology, drugs, and the counter-culture.
Where Tatsumi Yoshihiro's memoir A Drifting Life chronicled the triumphant early days of Gekiga, the depression prone Tsuge Yoshiharu's memoir Munou no Hito focused on his failings as an artist and inability to provide for his family. Published in 1985 it would be his final series.
