I love this series, it will be a shame to see it end.
This is especially true as I really don't expect it to have a (conventionally at least) happy ending.
Shiro has done too many bad things for her, or others, to forgive. Even if she wants to survive now, she still will have to live with all that guilt of her actions.
I am not sure why, but I can not shake this feeling that suddenly something bad is going to happen and Shiro (or Ganta - but probably Shiro) will die...

57 actually is 56b and last chapter is 57 . there were too 56 chapters in part a and b
Uh? Ok, da hell just happened?
Yeah, the ending was a bit meh.....
However it seems like the woodpecker was happy after all.
Well, it was a nice reading, my thanks to mangaka, abit dissapointed with the end, such twisted and bloody manga should'v had the same kind of ending, but whatever, was interesting ^^
and it's not like there is no window left for a sequel.
At least the mangaka kept the lyrical elements of the manga till the end. Regardless if it was a happy(somewhat) end, since it is happy or at least satisfying for us to know of the characters.
Seriously though I was suffocating when I was reading this manga, it was so messed up and so unfair to it's characters, that I always wanted to see them happy since they were always so miserable. And I loved them.
I'm kinda annoyed. The manga just lost momentum. The horrifying beginning gave way to traditional shounen "every is awesome" messages. I'm annoyed at Minatsuki not being put in a mental ward, where she belongs. The message of "forgiving everyone" seems out of place in this manga. But I can understand wanting to move on to a different story.
I agree with this sentiment especially in the later half when she returns from her break as it completely mellows out losing the impact of the horror that I really fell in love with at the early half. I can't say I am that happy with the fates of the characters given it feels completely feels like a cop out, but again the later half is more to blame for this direction since its clear that is where the author would head to.
It is not that I am a fan of gore or brutality but rather I found the early half that focused on exploring the nature of "sin" to be far more interesting. Forgiveness itself I think does bring the theme to a full circle but I can't say it was handled as well because this is where the "generic" tone starts to seep in. The forgiveness aspect just didn't reverberate as strongly and from there just didn't convince me much.
Overall, I am somewhat lukewarm about this manga it started out strong but really somewhere along the way it lost momentum and after the break it was even more noticeably out of steam.

Just read through it in a single day.
I must agree with pretty much everyone.
The start of the manga was so good, and the second half wasn't as good.
I don't know what to think about the ending...
In a way, I wanted Shiro to be happy, but I so wanted the Wretched Egg to die, so I was a bit conflicted!
I have a hard time understanding how Ganta was able to "forgive" Shiro for killing all of his friends...
And even though, she wasn't the one that killed Azami, Shiro is still the Wretched Egg in the end...
In any case, I guess it's a shonen, so we couldn't really expect a dramatic ending...
PS: If you liked Deadman Wonderland, I strongly recommand that you read Elfen Lied.
