With all of the mostly negative responses this past year or so due to the Katastrophe arc, I'd say we take a break from the rage and look back at the best moments of Gantz. Talk about the favorite missions, favorite battles, funny moments outside of missions, etc.
In example, looking back on it, I loved the Dinosaur mission with the upbringing of Kei as a leader and with my favorite character in the series, Cherry. Also, Kei needing to get a certain amount of points by the end of the mission just tense things up a bit more which I thought was interesting.
Some of my favorite moments have actually been during Katastrophe. One of them was in the sewers when all those insect things ambushed Tae's group of survivors. I was really excited to see how regular humans fare, but unfortunately it did end up leading to 'meet x group of people', 'everyone dies instantly except Tae' *rinse and repeat*. It was pretty funny lol. Literally every group she ran into was unique and interesting, and yet they all got killed off before they could amount to anything. Dammit Oku!
Pre-Katastrophe would have to be the Osaka arc. So many awesome characters showed up for this one. A lot of fun. Italy was a close second.. if they had spent a little more time on it, maybe joined up with some other Japanese teams or something (esp. outside of the missions) then it would have been excellent. Loved the extremely fast-paced battles and Inaba/Old mans deaths were awesomely tragic.
Katou's return and most of the Nuri-mission!
I'm sure the manga is a lot better when you read it all at once, instead of waiting for every chapter.
I would have to say I really liked the Oni arc, seeing all those OP gantzers at their max really gave me a thrill, right after that would probably be nishi doing that school shooting, he seemed to be in such an improbably stressful situation, like I remember dealing with some harsh times in grade school, but I was stunned at what nishi's life is like.
Nuari probably would have been my favorite but Oka hachirou was a letdown, with his mech being destroyed too easily, we still haven't even seen one shoot a laser missile or gun or anything. Also Katastrophe would probably be the best, but the entire enemy force was off-screened, an even bigger letdown.
Nishi's whole story has been phenomenal except for going crazy a little bit at the end there. If he had managed to finish off Kei and Tae I would give him a 10/10 for awesome. And he easily could have, the way it was written.
I have always liked the Oni Mission but it was like a classic anime eg bleach dbz etc set up. All had their opponents and they had something in common like a stone type, fire type and lightning type. We always had a fan service of a naked fake reika then got the wtf when Reika encountered it and it transformed into a 14 titty hound. Had Izumi be put in his place for once and that meeting with the crew with the vampires was tense....the final boss looked epic and owned them all to have Kei keep coming at him. With them all cheering you can do it kurono! lol
Oni arc was my fav. Fucking epic mission and even more epic conclusion.
Great set of filler enemies
Good boss fights
Vampires added a bit of tension
Oni boss felt like a huge threat
Gantzers were seen by the public
Izumi/Kurono final blow was awesome
Return of Kato and Nishi
I also liked all the in between mission stuff from the Buddah arc until Italy.
-Kurono beating up bullies

Gantz was best on a smaller local scale imo.
Shorty alien coming to school was important, it was then that Kurono started to change. It wasn't out of love for Tae it was the responsibility to protect her because it was his fault that the alien came their.
By best i take you mean the best of good moments,
Oni, dinosaur and Osaka missions are really cheerful i cant pick the best one, they are the best together. The rest are pretty much depression and fights.
For me the Osaka mission is best moment in Gantz, despite not being the best mission (I have this fascination with the Italian mission).
Gantz was at its best from the time of Izumi's arrival - Nuri
Best moment, the main character having to do an entire mission by himself and then fail.
Most Brutal moment: Izumi goes on a killing rampage dressed as a black guy.
