If there is a king, there must be a crown. i think this is a valid statement, correct me if im wrong
so that being said, i think it would be safe to say that The Straw Hat is the Pirate King's crown. i say this based on the following facts:
- The Straw Hat used to belong to Gol D. Roger as reminisced by Rayleigh
- Many of the old folks who knew, and/or dealth with, Gol D. Roger have all basically said that Luffy acts just like Roger
- Shanks, who "inherited" the hat gave it to luffy when he "wagered on the new era"
- Luffy's statements that he feels lost without it.
if this is the case, then i would say that shanks was merely the steward and keeper of the crown, and upon meeting luffy found the crown's successor.
i may be over thinking this. . . but idk. what are your thoughts on the matter?

As a symbolic meaning, yeah sure I'll roll with that! + It's very important to Luffy because it was given to him by his father figure ( I see Shanks more as Luffy's father than I do Dragon.
i was talking about a symbolic meaning. and i think your over-rating shanks's role to luffy. Luffy was about 7ish when he met shanks. and shanks was only in town for about a week. Garp, has always played the parent, and luffy treats him like he would treat a father.
Shanks was visited the town multiple times before setting sail for the grand line. its mentioned, and when luffy gets attacked by the bandits shanks is just arriving again and says "I wondered why no one was at the dock to greet us" in other words more than a week.
i.... missed that line......
when was it said that shanks was there over a year? i dont recall a specific timeframe ever being given to shanks's stay
can we just please acknowledge how INDESTRUCTIBLE the hat is?
The hat does not seem to be indestructible, considering Nami had to repair it on at least one occasion.
dude. all those battles he has with him, wether it was some rocket launchers or some devil fruit or guns, nothing destroy it
Could be that Luffy was either good at protecting it or the hat seemed to be out of harm's way.
To those who say it's indestructible, well, just look at the OP verse :P
When Luffy use ballon, his clothes doesn't tear apart
And yeah it should have burn a lot of times, but it's just convenient you know.
But I agree on this theory when you say it's been passed through generations of D's. Maybe it was Joy Boy's hat.
I'm sure there will one day be an explanation about this hat.
Oda made a point about it being important with Luffy's reaction to the damage. Fact that it hasn't been damaged since then is not that important, I think. Luffy probably takes care of it better now (sounds like something Oda would say in SBS).
