About the choices that military recruits have after they finish their training.
1'st ten goes to Military Police.
Rest can choose between Town Guard and Scout Legion.
What I don't understand is why they choose ten best soldiers they have to serve such pointless role? ( I understand the point but that's like taking 10 best SEAl soldiers and putting them to guard the White House, a place that will most likely never be attacked ).
So why keeping the best of the best for peaceful inner city and leave only meatshields to deal with the threat?
Well, there can be serveral reasons behind this. One is that they hope to hog the best for themselves in case of something like, say, an uprising. However consiodering how rusty the military police seem to be (skill-wise, that's it) despite supposedly being the elite, the cream of the corp, that seems soemwhat unlikely... Another theory I've heard is that it's actually a subtle way of sabotage for the ones in charge who don't want Mankind within the walls to do too well, or grow too powerful...
Because the royals want to have the best protection while the others are dying, I guess.
You'd think the Scouting Legion should have the best people since they're the most badass or something, but they know although people sign up to training, they won't be motivated unless they're promised safety. So they want everyone to work hard to get that 'safe zone' in the MP. That's what the scene with Annie vs. Eren is all about. It's not about the 10 best, it's about the hundreds of the rest of trainees. If they really wanted the 10 best to safeguard their nobles, then they wouldn't let all 8 of them join the Scouts.
But I don't understand how Christa got 10th... although she recently made her first kill, she still looks soooo weak...... I suspect Ymir must have rigged the scores or something, or maybe the Wall Cult did, but I thought they preferred her dead...
I remember Christa admitting that Ymir gave her the spot, not sure which chapter it was from the top of my head (wiki says so as well, for what it's worth) - I'll look it up later when I have some time if no one else beats me to it
edit: hmm, can't find it, though I could swear I came across that bit of info somewhere... maybe I remembered wrong. ..

I think that one of the reasons is that people joining the military mostly do so in order to not be labeled a coward/avoid having to be a menial laborer, not that they have any real intention of fighting titans. If the top 10 were automatically sent to the Scouting Legion, the division with the highest death rate, no one would put forth much of an effort during training for fear of scoring too high and being sent to their deaths.
