Is there a word in English for スベリ芸. Or if I just changed it to romaji would an English speaking audience understand?
It's when a comedian tries to make the audience laugh and then bombs (すべる). Then from that silence the audience laughs. Kind of it's so bad it's funny.
I'm terrible at explaining it, here's the Japanese wiki
I'm tempted to use the word slapstick even though it's not.

If I have to translate it in English, based on the wiki definition, I might do something like funny awkward jokes or one-liner jokes (or one liners) that create awkward moment.
I don't know much about comedy, but I don't think there is an equivalent term in English(US).

The easiest way to handle the translation is to change スベリ芸 into romaji and add a footnote.
SNL(Saterday Night Live) TV show may be using that concept of スベリ humor with Debbie Downer, a total downer character who is associated with trombone "wah waaah" sound effect at the end of the skit. That's a short sitcom, and it's quite different from JP スベリ芸。
