Medaka and Akaboshi were getting around Top 5 to 6 with some of their earlier chapters far as I recall, but plummeted almost as soon as real rankings started coming in.
While it certainly can be an indicator as you said (if something is plummeting before the 8 chapter mark, that probably means it'll bomb), it's generally too unreliable to give us an accurate impression until after we've seen the real rankings.

I put very little stock into how high the editors place a series. Unless the snap polls are truly hideous they tend to place them in the top ten. In truth I doubt either new series will be canceled quickly. Both stand out, they strike me as something that would appeal to a broad cross section of Jump readers. Hokenshitsu and Rillienthal both seem more likely to meet early ends.
For some reason Jump has a pattern of putting Toriko 1st then putting it in the bottom five. It happened once or twice before.
Otherwise, a ton of series are unranked, and Beelzebub and Bakuman are yo-yoing.
Otherwise everything's about in its normal place, some of the low series moving 1-2 places.
I still don't know what to think of Kuroko since it goes all over the place... but it's done well enough to probably average about where Psyren is.
On an unrelated note, here's a big picture of the One Piece volume cover we've already seen and a cut-off picture of the Toriko and HunterXHunter volume covers that we haven't.
Here's a close up full pic of the HXH cover, by some guy on the RitualScanForge forums.

So it looks like Kawaguchi is doing a boxing/fighting manga? Could be good. Been awhile since one was in Jump i think.
And the new volume covers look great. All of them really but especially Mago's. I always love its covers.
I'mma have to say that issue #53 is quite a nice feat...great cover, great color pages, love most of the new volume covers in the preview, double fix of One Piece, awesome news (Mago's animation; Kawaguchi Yukinori's one shot in Akamaru) - I'm pleased MAX!
Is there some Jump schedule? I want to know if there are any breaks in the upcoming weeks, or just breaks for One Piece.
No, no, shit! Why!? Why!? Dear God Pain, WHYYY!? I hate 2 double issues in a row, I just hate :xOriginally Posted by Heiji-sama

yeah,that really is a pity -__-
i hate this time of the year, especially when a manga-ka decides to skip the issue,so we have to wait like three weeks or more
hello agony threads!
That's because that's just the front-cover, but the cover as a whole is more then just one page.
Well at least one thing: come Sunday (when we get spoilers for issue 1, 2010), we'll be in a new thread. Should be nice to start a new year of Jump, particularly with the good things coming up...and the dumb decisions. (do we REALLY need the Bleach spines for 2010, why not wait until 2011 and let Usuta have fun for the 10th anniversary of Jaguar? Yeah it's not one of the big three but it is still one of the longest running series in the magazine currently)

No 'lol', not every time every year every christmas time - usually there is 1 double issue at christmas time, the last time of double issues of 2 times in a row were 3 years ago, and I remember 'nicely' that the issues came week after week, and then it was 3 weeks of waiting for a new stuff : (Originally Posted by Drmke
