It was Nationals Round 2,
Ryoma VS Tanishi iirc
Considering Konomi has set the bar high with some really awesome covers in the past, this is pretty standard.
In fact, we ALREADY have one with Ryoma hitting a ball and a massive panel of Ryoga's face, except it has Tokugawa and Byoudouin on it too.
We should have got at least Ryoga in action too or something :/
The people that uploaded this first on the net are a really reliable group, secondly it was done in a series and of other pics and released along with the Tezuka Grand Slam winning photo and Momo & Kaido at a Sushi bar (Presumably Kawamura's).
Not since like the Regionals at least.
If you go through them in the past, they've had countless chapter covers and anime openings and just standard manga panels of Ryoma with a racket in his right hand.

Well, I found the pic in pixiv and if it's by Konomi it would've been banned from there, I think. The artist is especially good at mimicking Konomi's style. In the last book, there's only the pic of 25 year old Tezuka, 24 year old Momo and Kaidoh, and 23 y. o. Ryoma. I peeked the book when I was in Kinokuniya, and I didn't find Sakuno there.
Well, i can't find the original post at Tumblr.
So it can be a mistake by the first one who posted it or mine.
I can't call it true or false on something from almost 5 months ago that i can't remember the details.
It was even given that audience reaction moment that is classic to PoT too.
"What!? That freshman brat is a Southpaw!?".
It had a bit of relevance.

Then Kai revealed he was a southpaw too and not too many sh!ts were given
That's because Kai's a scrub and nobody cares about him lol
No, I mean, overall plot wise that change didn't mean anything >_> (except that the match was harder for Kikumaru... who still managed to win).
I also thought that Nitoryu was more about changing the racquet constantly to avoid using a not as powerful backhand and to hit balls that usually you wouldn't reach with a backhand. The only ones that I saw using that were Ryoma and Nanjiroh (but maybe it was anime filler, I dunno, but it was in the match against Akutsu).
When i meant Nitoryuu being relevant i didn't mean simply switching i meant switching mid point..unless thats what you guys meant too. (Really can't remember any of the higa matches that well haha)
I thought you meant it as switching in a rally, and having an edge in the match thanks to that... explain yourself better then
