I think there's a surprising amount of people who care, unfortunately only a limited number who are interested in discussion. Seems to be that way for almost any completed series. A day doesn't go by that a Dragonball reference isn't made in one of the forums for the big 3, the occasional YuYu reference is made too. I've even seen the occasional JoJo's comparison too. Slam Dunk also has a pretty big following. Not exactly a broad cross-section of Jump's history but it's a start. It's not really evident at MH but appreciation is growing for classic manga, more is being translated online (some older Sunday series too) while some of the smaller publishers are using classics as cornerstones of their catalog. Vertical's Tezuka reissues and Drawn & Quarterly's line of Yoshihiro Tatsumi reissues come to mind. Right now older manga, Jump or in general, needs cheerleader. Fans need to spread the word that there is more to manga than the big, currently popular titles.
The older Jump series I'm really intent on reading is City Hunter, almost forgot about it too. Now that there are regular translations I will, once it gets closer to being completed.
People can appreciate history; they just sometimes need to be reminded it's there. I've hosted manga-history panels at anime conventions and a university anime club, and while people tend to come into the panel with limited knowledge (mostly of current series), I've managed to successfully introduce them to older series that they've later told me they enjoy.
I don't mention that to boast, but rather to use as an example that sometimes, people just need to be introduced to series they'll ultimately love. I'd be very happy to see more discussion about classic series, whether in this thread or others.
People will never forget Dragonball. Let's face it, it finished 1995 and there are still things popping up for it. Name Drops everywhere, merchandise and new series. Series like those become legendary and we constantly look to them as our inspiration.
Other series that have survived the new age and are still talked about are scarce, but I still hear people mention Kinnikuman (even before StrangerAtaru's trans) and other series like Rurouni Kenshin (although that's more recent I suppose). JoJo can't be stopped, I can't stop hearing things about Saint Seiya, and our most famous Kochikame. Some of these old classics will never die out from time's curse.
Also, I kinda want to have a list of required reading in hand. This could mean a list of the old classics. I know I've read possibly the best ones I could find, but I know I've missed some. Does anyone know where I could find such a list? Not just from Jump as well. The classics are always to be remembered.
I have a long ignored thread to discuss classics: here. Anyone who wants is welcome to post, recommend, and discuss classic manga.
Back to discussing Jump. Sorry
I've wanted to do Ring ni Kakero honestly after seeing it undone and hearing of it's influence (see G Gundam's commentary), but somehow I just never have found the time for it. It is a crucial turning point for the magazine though: even though Kurumada started it off as a sports series, its transformation sort of would echo the evolution of the magazine in general.
classic manga that i want to see translated, are Jungle no Oujaa taa-chan and Rokudenashi Blues. the 2 series that i most want to read XP
the first 7 volumes of Rokudenashi are already scanlated. And they are pretty damn good.

Meruhen? Great, all I'm thinking of is MAR.
Well...Metalluca's end was pretty much guaranteed considering it bombed.
There really isn't much to say except that Toriko and Bakuman are above Bleach...and that's really it.
In the issue 41 Shinigami and Inumaru have the color page! And there's a one shot! It's a fake!
