I was thinking about doing a read-along this season, but since I've read it already it's more like a story companion.
Another trailer by the way :

Indeed, the stuff is fitting for the era they are living in the ASOIAF universe. Imho AGoT doesn't glorify rape or seed female hate in any sense. It describes things as they are in the that world, very similar what it has been in history of our world too. Brutal, not nice. I think it has quite the opposite effect. Many of the women are very strong characters. The hell, probably the single most respectable and good person is a woman (Brienne).
Besides your friend hasn't apprarently followed the commentary and critique on AGoT a lot, since this opinion has been brought up every now and then ever since the first book was released in 1996. We'll I sort of understand that, since ASOIAF just recently had it's breakthorough to bigger mainstream markets, despite being already 15 years old. Lot of people asume it is a more recent thing, since the TV show is new. But there never has been a big scandal seeking discussion about it, since it isn't like that.
@Gats: This is the thread for the books. For HBO series dicussion go to the other thread. That trailer has been posted and discussed there already.
Copied/pasted the post here for book's part discussion. The whole spoiler hiding thing begins to be really annoying in the GoT series thread.
A very good and long interview. I'd say that it's mainly for those who read the books (spoilers) but each time there is one, you are warned, so I guess those who didn't read it yet can check this interview to a point.

So I finished ADWD. Best book I ever read. And I read a lot.
Ok, in this game of thrones I pledge my allegiance to Dany. What a wonderful character, gawd.
I think she's so annoying now ._. I still like her 'cause of Emilia, LOL
LOL, why? She did all she could do with the little knowledge She has about ruling. Intuition alone, She tried to be fair and impart justice. She's a conqueror and a queen, but right now She NEEDS some characters that will help her.
Tyrion, Victarion, Aegon, Jon... I think they will all gather around her at some point.
I disliked some of her decisions, the one about Jorah, for example XD Sometimes I think she could listen to Selmy more, she's just too stubborn about being a trusty and independent queen, although she knows lil. And that thing with Daario was so meh ç.ç I still like the char a lot, and all the story surrounding her, but I used to like her way more during the first book.
The series, but ADWD is probably the best so far. And I found her choices logical and fitting, actually, to her character and how it was developing.
Yeah, it fits her character, I guess. Her development made me like her less xD Doesn't mean it doesn't made sense^^
LOL, yes. I read a lot of Dany hate on ADWD but for me it was the most interesting character. I like characters that make mistakes and are human.
Daenerys is developed as a child and as a queen and both things are portrayed beautifully. I loved how She had the dilemma all the time and spitted between the two and how She in the end CHOSE to be a Queen and CHOSE to save the people of Drogon. She proved that She can be a queen in the same time She can be fair and just.
As I said, She only needs better advisers. For me, Martin is setting all of them in different parts of the world... :P
Still my favorite chapters were from Bran and Arya. I know, they were only two xD But it was incredible epic each one.
