I haven't watched enough of The Wire for that to be a possibility (I know, being from Baltimore it's a shameful thing) so I would have got over that.
Fan favorites for the role seem to be James Purefoy or Henry Ian Cusick. For some reason, in my head, Cusick would work. He has the look anyway
Cusick maybe... Purefore not. He is way too stand-out. The fact that Mance doesn't stand out anyway and looks completly a just another guy is such a big part of his character for me. West would have fitted, only problem being his face being so tied to his role in The Wire. People call Littlefinger still sometimes Carcetti and Osha Tonks. Now, the lead character of the one of the best shows ever...
And you really should watch The Wire. Definetly my favorite series ever.

Yes, I've heard such praise before. Only season three eps are on my cable system currently, and I've been too lazy to download. But I will.
Apparently Purefoy is involved in some other series so not happening. Cusick as Desmond is pretty different than Mance but in some ways not. Someone charming and intriguing, etc
So are you all keeping up with the casting for Season 3? The one piece of casting I'm the most excited about is Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder. Most well known for playing Julius Caesar on Rome (in which he's pretty darn terrific, might I add). He's also Dumbledore's brother in the last Harry Potter movie. He's played a fierce leader before, as well as a whole bunch of "regular" people which will be needed to play Mance. I must say I pictured Mance slightly younger, but that's my own fault since I don't think his age is ever given in the books (?).
Also, Grey Worm will be played by Jacob Anderson. Have no idea who he is. Daario Naharis will be played by Ed Skrein who apparently is some musician-turned-actor who I know nothing else about. I'm a little worried he won't do such an important part justice, but I guess it'll work out if he has that sex appeal only a musician can have ().
Ramon Tikaram will be Prendahl na Ghezn (whose name I had to look up because I didn't remember him... but he's the Stormcrow commander before Daario, I guess.) Dan Hildebrand will be Kraznys mo Nakloz. Him, I do remember. Not a huge part, but a memorable one so I hope he does a good job. Apparently he has two minor roles in Deadwood, but I don't remember him so all I can do is hope.
Ian McElhinney is back as Ser Barristan. (Yay!)
Josef Altin is back as Pyp. (Okay!)
Clive Mantle will NOT be back as the Greatjon. (Naaaay! )
And Luke McEwan is back as Rast.
Just in case there's anyone here who hasn't been reading the fan pages every day. And maybe has something more to say about the confirmed actors, since I don't know most of them.
Mi gusta Daario O: Seems promising... way better than I imagined him, LOL
(ZOMG, you're back, dog *-*)
Daario...Yum. Damn, yum. So sexy but I wonder how He will look with all the colors and the beard.
I echo the sentiments to Mance looking younger in my mind but with how awesome the casting is, Mance not being done right wasn't a worry of mine. Even if it doesn't look like how I imagine, we'll see.
The best news of the recent casting stuff for me is Ian McElhinney coming back. The continuity is important to me, and he was great in the role. Perfect even. Given how expanded his role becomes from book three on, this is good news.
Clive Mantle not coming back is weird...I knew something was up when we didn't see Greatjon or Maege at all last season. Roose took most of the screentime in their absences I guess.
A small beard could work. The hair...well, I don't think so. If they left the purple eyes I imagine they'll leave that as well.
I find edmure, orell and meera a bit odd, but the others seem good.
I agree about Edmure. He doesn't even seem to be red D:
I like Meera ^.^
That's quite close what I imagine Edmure without a beard. The haird color doesn't match, but that's not really a big deal imho.
Yeah, if they dye his hair T.T Otherwise, I hate when they change some outstanding family features T.T
It's funny how Iwan Rheon is just "boy" when a lot of people were expecting him to be Ramsay- or maybe that's their way of keeping things hush-hush.
Even though some of the castings are not what I imagined, I'm sure they'll be able to look the part when they're wearing make-up/costumes and being in character.
