I just thought a thread to gather all those little, not-so-worth-discussing-but-interesting news, funny news and such could be a good idea
Study: Seeing a U.S. flag makes Americans vote Republican
As the title says. In a two year study it was found out that people tend to vote more republican when they see a U.S. flag, even though 90% said it had no influence on them.
Previously, a study found out that National Independence Day Parade also boosted Republican results every time.
European Court of Human Rights judges pro Whistleblowers
Of special relevance for Germany: There have been several cases of employees who made major deficites in their companies public. Some have even be awarded with prices for civil courage, but still lost their employment.
The specific case that was judged was that of a geriatric nurse, who, after saying it to her chiefs for years already, went public with the major wrongs of her facility. She was awarded for civil courage, but also fired.
The whole flag thing makes sense if you think about it. The republican party is far more nationalistic than the democrat party and usually places more emphasis on US interests than on more integrated international cooperation and whatnot. In this regard an association of US nationalism (hence the flag) and the republican party makes sense (specially if they vouch for the old fashion american way and whatnot). The situation reminded me of how the "smoking kills" signs on cigarette packs makes people want to smoke lol.
Norway's answer to the massacre
Prime minister Jens Stoltenberg announced to respond to such violence not with more surveillance and terror, but by maintaining the very open and liberal society which the murderer searched to fight.
King Harald V. praised this reply and announced to be thankful for that faith in freedom.
