Come to think of it... Sanji's pirate name appears to me to be a "tricky" foreshadowing to his fate being treated by okamas all the time (Bon Chan, Ivankov's kingdom and the Okama Mermaids).
"Black Leg"/"Kuroashi" is a reference not only to his fighting style - there's a bird named in Japanese "Kuroashi ahoudori" (= "Black-footed Albatross") that looks like this:
And following the name pattern: Women do get the bird names! And of course: The Okama made him fly!
Oh... And there's a character in one of the Romance Dawn one shots looking like Sanji with one of his eyes hidden under hair.
P.S.: Uriel, I found the thread. ;P

this is what im talking about...
luffy was inspired from a random guy in the dragon ball series...oda's imagination really impresses me...he turned a random character into his main character LOL.
The previous post was great, i didnt think WB would be related to hogan, but it makes a lot of sense. The Bandana, the bleached moustache, the height..
I thought Oda got his idea of Grandline from visiting Las Vegas.
As you are driving there from California, the first casino you see is whiskey pete, first island is whiskey peak. You have Venetian which is like Water 7, MGM like little garden, circus circus, bellagio and others which give you a similar feel. This could just be me trying to correlate both though....
I thought Pell looked like Brandon Lee from the Crow..
Mihawk like Zorro (from the mask of Zorro)
Also, Franky seems more like Superman to me, with his underwear outside, besides that, he is truly the man of steel.
good point!!!! im about to bring out the places that oda had inspiration of and we think alike LOL ^_^b
Also: 70s post-apocalyptic anime Future Boy Conan always reminded me of Luffy..
I never knew about that Dragon Ball guy

...So what do you think about that ?
Jimbei being introduced in chapter 69. They talk about Fishman Island and Jimbei being responsible for letting lose Arrlong, and him being a shichibukai.
But that is a character introduction without revealing how the character looks like... Toriyama did the same with Vegeta and Freezer...
BTW, Toriyama. With the Dragonball republishing as Kanzenban, Oda and other Jump mangaka created some tribute images. Here's Oda's:
Forgot to add the source: http://www.daizex.com/multimedia/images/artists/
If you're curious on other jump artists. (but you have to be fast IMHO since they are merging the portal with kanzentai.com to kaizenshu.com)

Still he already wrote the whole backstory at that time. I think it's amazing.
He couldn't have written the whole plot, because he never imagined the manga to last this long. Oda just gave a fishmen, Arlong, a reason to be in the weak East Blue. I'm not saying that he hadn't a fundamental structure for some arcs and changes though.
edit: Well he had to give him some background information and used that chance to give a hint to Jinbe, whom we haven't seen until in the prior to last arc of the the Paradise part of the manga. I only had a problem with whole, but with the revocation all is fine.

It would have been awkward if he didn't come back from the "friendliest" of the Younkou crews for delivering a warning.^^
AFAIR, that dance was seen last time with sticks and baskets in chapter 522 when Luffy dances with Daisy and Sweet Pea...
Apparently on FMI, they don't have any baskets, but some sticks. ^^
Oda used it many times before...
I haven't checked Skypiea nor Arabasta, but the origin seems to be after Chopper left Sakura.
and shortly afterwards
