Never giving up
Changing the world / Quest for Peace
When I was first starting to write my books, I learned a little technique that I find really interesting called the "one-liner".
It's basically a way to figure out what is the "core" of the story.
What you need to do is to summarize your story in one short sentence (you can't add commas after commas to make it long), and this will give you the most important thing of your story (the bone around which you add the meat, if you prefer).
So, while I was trying to do that with the story of Naruto, I realized that Part 1 and Part 2 were really totally different stories, and that it was really hard to make a summary of the whole manga in one-line.
Here's what I came up with:
"A young inadequate ninja goes through hardships to become the Hokage and be acknowledged by his village"
The main theme was "Hard Work vs Innate abilities"
Anything regarding the Kyubbi, Sasuke, Orochimaru and even the love story with Sakura was the meat around the core of the story, IMO.
But, when you come to Part 2, everything changed.
"A young ninja goes through hardships to save his best friend who is engulfed in a cycle of hatred and revenge".
And the theme changed as well : "Bounds vs Revenge" (or Love vs Hatred, if you prefer)
In this case, the goal from Part 1, becoming Hokage isn't important anymore.
And even the theme were messed up since we discover in Part 2 that Naruto is actually from a powerful clan and that he has innate abilities as well, like a special chakra.
And all of what happened to him was part of his "destiny"...
The core of the story is not the same.
And I think this is one of the main reason why Kishi thought best to even change the name of the manga from Naruto to Naruto Shippuden.
If you compare to other manga that had timeskip and that didn't change name (ex: Bleach, One Piece), you'll see that the core story remained the same. Ichigo still wants to protect the people he love, and Luffy still wants to become the Pirate King.
The story of the two parts of Naruto are so different that I wasn't able to make a one-liner short enough to explain the story.
So what do you guys think?
Can you come up with a one-liner to summarize the whole story, or the different parts of Naruto?
I'm especially impatient to see the funny ones some of you might come up with! :P

Part 1: A story about Ninjas and their way of life.
Part 2: Who has the bigger Jutsu?
part 1:the kyubi is in naruto
part 2:hashirama is in everybody(you bad boy you...hashirama-sama)
sorry...couldn't help it...
Part 1: A story about a noble village.
Part 2: A story about a not so noble village.
Part 1 : naruto makes bonds
Part 2 : Death makes you stronger
Part 1 : A good story ... a ordinary boy who want to write his destiny by himself and become strongest ninja ...
Part 2 : collection of nonsenses .... a destined child who become savior and become leader of good side but he even didn't dare to change his evil village !! and the only thing he doing is crying , hiding the truth and talking !!! and everyone believe in him in less than 10 minutes !!! a story that in it bad side killing each other !!
Part 1: Destiny doesn't mean shit.
Part 2: Hypocrisy. Destiny does indeed mean shit.
Part 1: OMG Orochimaru is too powerful!
Part 2: I guess he was weaker than I thought
One time I even thought about a conversation between Naruto and Neji:
Naruto – Hey Neji, wassup?
Neji – Nothing, just cheeling… And you? Heard you become Hokage… I’ve always believed you would… With nothing but hard work and perseverance I knew you could do it…
Naruto – Yeah… And when they heard that I was the son of Yondaime it made even easier…
Neji – So… you are the son of the hero who saved Konoha from Kyuubi all those years ago?
Naruto – And that’s not all!! Did you know that I come from the same clan of the wife of Shodaime? And that my clan was whipped out because other peoples feared their sealing techniques? I even had a prophecy saying that I would save the world!!!
Neji - … Are you telling me that all you did was already written? Then all that talk about changing ones fate was a lie… We are indeed bound to our predetermined fates… Then that means… I’m still caged… All my life was a lie…
And this is said… I know that “Never give up” was also referenced in part 2, but with all the lineage Naruto has, how come could he be so dumb in school? He’s the son of the Hokage, a genius kid… And if naruto take’s out his mother, how come is he some clueless about seals and such things (after all, his family lineage)???
Well I don't argue that many things have changed with Part 2, however if you start out by giving 2 separate 1liners, then of course you will end up with some themes or major stuff contradicting each other, unless you find a 1liner for the entire manga...something along the lines of
The story of a ninja who is an inspiration for others and bringer of change(?)...and this is something that can be found in all the big 3...Luffy was praised as gathering allies and inspiring, Ichigo brought change to SS and managed to influence even a hardliner like Yama...
@OP...the second 1liner is a continuation of the first...Naruto said a few times, that he can't be Hokage if he can't take care of 1 friend...so he wants to be perfect...and I'm not even sure the entirety of part 1 is about being a Hokage...while it is predominant, we've already seen the conflict with Sasuke and Akatsuki...
I do agree however with the destiny thing...that has changed a bit, but only in the lights of Naruto's origins...otherwise, there are several instances, where Naruto disputes fate, so this theme didn't disappear entirely
1)a ninja who tries (with results) to be respected and to become the strongest.he fails in saving his friend from the evil Oro
2)Akatsuki damages the world, naruto fights it getting stronger,in the end he succeeds in becoming the strongest (little spoiler? )
Part 1: Itachi is better than your favorite character
Part 2: Itachi is better than your favorite character
