Not much to say here, so I'll get right to it.
The poll last week was on whether or not for Ha Jinsung would flip loyalty on FUG. The vast majority think he will, myself included. Now we just have to wait and see if that turns out to be true; or if we're mostly fools.
Now onto the review!
Chapter 116 & 117 Review
I know right?!
These chapters were a pair of side stories. One was a flashback highlighting Baam's time under FUG's "care" and the other about some familiar former test administrators (Lero-Ro and Quant) on a quest to join Wing Tree which takes an interesting turn, toward Baam. At a glance these chapters may not seem to have a lot in common but they actually both carry a distinct focus on building up the coming events on the 30th floor.
The FUG flashback chapter was actually focused on Ha Jinsung as much as on Baam; putting something of a spotlight on his deep reservations about FUG's course of action regarding him. As well as shedding a little light on Hwa Ryun (I guess), though in her case it just highlights the next layer of crazy.
The Lero-Ro and Quant's quest to join Wing Tree was, to me, the more interesting of the two because it brought them into contact with Koon Hachuling (aka Blueberry *snicker*). Though a mostly comical chapter, it results in Lero-Ro, Quant, and Blueberry setting off toward Baam's group. The repercussions for which are dramatic and profound.
Kind of an uneven pair of chapters art-wise. The FUG flashback chapter was for the most part very impressive. There was a slight issue with Hwa Ryun's disappearing pantyhose but other than that it looked really good across the board.
Lero-Ro and Quant's chapter stumbled a bit more. It was meant to look cartoon-ish but, even taking that into consideration, the artwork was well below average.
Two interesting and, for the most part, well executed side stories that help build toward the coming the coming apocalypse on the 30th floor.
I give them a 4 out of 5
Points of Interest
FUG and Baam: Part 3
Ohhhhh, so your one of "those" redheads. A ton of stuff just started makin' sense...
We got see first hand some of what FUG's relationship to Baam has been since they got their hooks into him through the recent flashback and it brought a few things to light.
Firstly, that Ha Jinsung has never been a huge believer in FUG's strategy involving Baam. It seem like from the beginning he's had reservations about this and, over time, they seem to have grown. When he said "For some reason, I keep thinking that he is not meant to walk this path." I think that was very telling of just how shaky his belief in this plan is.
Secondly, a clear picture of what Baam's motivation was to be stronger. To never be separated from those he cares about. That should make FUG nervous because that's pretty much describing being strong enough that they cannot control him.
Thirdly, I'm just going to come out and say it, Hwa Ryun is crazier than a bag of angry cats. I'm not even sure what to think about her comment that Baam is her god. Does she see Baam as a god figure that if she worships he'll grant her wish? Does she think she's turning him into a god? Does she think she's helping him with all she's done? As far as I can tell it doesn't matter, because every one of those marks her as a bit of a lunatic.
Lero-Ro, Quant, and Blueberry: The Cavalry
Maybe, Baam should be a little worried about this one.....
The introduction of Lero-Ro and Quant into the mix adds a definite sense of impending doom for FUG's plans. The reason for that is that both of those Rankers know will almost certainly recognize Baam at a glance and standing right beside them is none other than a member of Wing Tree who went along with Yuri's last Baam hunt; and probably has both Mazino and Yuri on speed dial.
So, aside from being Rankers with fairly friendly feelings towards Baam themselves, they are a phone call (or lighthouse call or whatever) away from unleashing hell.
The question with this group is going to be how close Blueberry stays, and how strong he is, because if things go sour between FUG and Baam they might need a little more backup than just Lero-Ro and Quant will be able to provide.
The Showdown: Part 2
"It's nothing too difficult", I feel like those words are going to be hilarious later on.
So here's the current tally of the bare minimum of what we've got set to collide on the the 30 floor at the moment...
- Baam's entire old group
Koon with his new recruits, Rachel, Androssi, Anak, Leesoo, and probably the rest of the gang.
- Baam's new group.
Baam, Wangan, Miseng, Goseng, Arkraptor, Teddy, Prince, and Yihwa.
- Baam's FUG observers
Ha Jinsung and Hwa Ryun
- Baam's Wing Tree observers
Blueberry, Lero-Ro, and Quant.
Karaka and whatever goon squad he's got.
The FUG flashback once again underscored how uneasy Ha Jinsung is, and apparently always has been about Baam's situation. This divide between how people like Karaka and Yu Han Sung think about Baam and how Jinsung does seems to have been there from the start; so this new group looks more and more like it's going to be the tipping point. It's also looking more and more like the 30th Floor is going to be the stage for that to happen.
Lero-Ro and Quant heading toward Baam in the company of a person capable of contacting both Yuri and Mazino is like two sticks of dynamite rolling toward a fire. When they get to where they're going, what happens next is likely to be equally loud and destructive.

So... do you think we will have yet another 2-5 years timeskip?
They are still far away from the 30th floor...
So, if the next arc is the Factory arc already, we will need another timeskip, right?
I know that time is different in the tower, but it still bothers me when we have so many timeskip...
Especially when you think that if we get a 5 years timeskip, it will mean that Baam would be a LOT closer to the 2nd group than the 1st group, since he only spent a little time with them compared to the 5 years he would have passed with the 2nd group.
Your right in that it is a bit strange to have so many time-skips, especially in a comic, but I think that comes down to the fact that ToG seems like it's general story structure is similar to a series of novels.
For example, in one of my favorite book series (the Dresden Files) each book is about some event or situation that happens to the Wizard Harry Dresden. Sometimes these events are a year or more apart and while the author makes sure you know what happens in between, that time is skipped over. This is pretty typical for novels, and I think SIU has kind of adapted that for ToG's arcs. So, even though it forms a larger story, each arc is self contained to some degree.
If any of that makes sense.
but each time he skipped some time,at least we saw a short flashback of what happened in between the skip,so it doesnt bother me that much if there is another timeskip=)
and baams team right now definetly has to get a lot stronger,to compare at least a bit with his old team and the one from kun
I think there will be a two year (or slightly under that) time skip between the most previous and next chapter; And that's definitely a good thing, I want to see if Ja Wangnan gets strong(ish) and if Yeon learns to control her power more. If that happens the concern for Baams team needing to get stronger will be no more.
Also I personally hope Lero-ro, Quant, and Blueberry get in a fight with FUG and win
As for Yihwa, I think it is certainly possible that she will reach that level( Anak, Androssi ) which would be cool because she isn't a princess but she would be able to contest against them. Before she met Viole her only reason for climbing the tower was most likely because she's from the Yeon family and that's what they do. Now I think she has a true desire to change things and that will allow her to use her power.
Welcome to mangahelpers community, also from my side Hestia
nice review Jammin. you pointed thing i didn't notice
for the 2nd timeskip, i think it's necessary. Baam new team need to grow but i think it's a bit rushed, it would've been nice if we learned more about them before the time skip we practically know nothing about Teddy and Akraptor and they seems to have interesting story. Specially Teddy
As good as everyone in ToG has a good back-story.. and how it is told.. thats something SIU does really well - for sure not the boring way^^.
Its a great pillar for the ToG fanbase to keep tham at bay^^
That's something i really miss.. sometimes when i think about the 3 big Shounen mangas. whatever, maybe I'm just used to much to their mangas.
Even so, yeah at the workshop will be a huge clash. there could be a celebrity-deathmatch ... famous people beat everything apart^^
at the end.. the winners go to Baam and ask him if he wanna join (if its not FUG).. he says no, goes to Rachel and facepalm here while he shouts why :P (joke prediciton)

Interesting predictions. One way I could see it go is as follows:
Viole meets up with Koon and his old friends on the 30th floor. They find out that FUG is blackmailing him into being a slayer. Baam tries to get them to ignore it, but they insist on trying to release him from FUG and end up confronting Jinsung or something. Baam gets his hopes up because Jinsung has been fairly friendly, but in the end:
So to demonstrate just how serious he and FUG are, Jinsung kills one of his friends, probably someone unimportant like Parakewl. Hachulling is just supposed to observe Viole and he isn't in any danger since FUG needs to keep him alive, so he continues his observation. Viole and friends resume their climb up the Tower with a renewed determination so that they might someday be strong enough to contest FUG. That would be interesting, don't you think?
