234. Not Negotiation
Okay, right off the bat, Im going to say that I had some problems with this weeks chapter. Rather than summarize them in the introduction, Im going to jump right into a play-by-play of what happened.
We start off with Ulquiorras appearance in the Dangai (the tunnel to the human world), as he demands that Orihime comes with him to Hueco Mundo, and threatens to kill her friends if she doesnt. While Ulquiorra did give us iron-clad proof of how badass he is, this whole scene bothered me for a very simple reasonit was way too long. It didnt deserve half the entire chapter, for Christs sake. Maybe four or five, but nine and ½? Come on, Kubotite. Plus, it felt like it was being stretched anyway, which only made it worse. Its not like we learned much of anything new about Ulquiorra or Orihime in the scene, except that the Espada was probably a pimp when he was still alive
Back on Earth, it seemed that Urahara didnt take very much damage from Wonderweisss sneak attack. Just as he commented on how strange it was, Yammi comes out of nowhere and starts wailing on him with a series of Bala, which is basically a compact, high-speed version of Cero. Apparently, that was what Wonderweiss had used, as well. So, with that, Kubotite bought himself another week without having to show us Uraharas Bankaiwhich is really all that I want to see out of this fight, now that Wonderweiss is back in his gaping idiot mode.
Anyway, just as Luppi is about to kill off Matsumoto for badmouthing him (even though he had it coming), in bursts the one bright spot for me this weekHitsugaya, almost completely unharmed by Luppis first attack in the released state and ready to wreck somebody. And indeed he did, as the chapter ends with him using a brand new technique (Sennen Hyourou, or Thousand Year Ice Prison) to crush a stunned Luppi. Granted, hes probably not out for the count, but it was nice to see some solid evidence that the Soul Society captains arent going to be completely useless in this war. However, my guess is that Luppi was probably an Ajuuca before becoming an Arrancar, which is why hes only a mid-tiered Espadabetter than Yamii, most likely, but definitely more mouth than real strength.
We didnt see anything of Ichigo and Grimmjow this week, but its already been established that he and the other Vaizards are probably going to be the only ones who can face the higher level Espada like Ulquiorra, who might have been a former Vastorode. Ichigo didnt have any limit set on his power when he fought Grimmjow before, and hes only able to do damage with his mask onand thats before Grimmjow releases his sword. How well hed fare against Grimmjow at full power is speculation at this point, but my guess is that he probably wouldnt stand a chance right now. Im sure that hell have more than enough strength once he gains control over his Vaizard powers completely, though.
So, in short, Hitsugaya basically saved this weeks chapter for me. The rest of it was either not that revealing (like the first ten pages) or not that important (like Bala). But at least we have a better sense of how much Soul Society can doafter all, Hitsugaya is definitely not the strongest captain, talented as he may be. Though we have yet to see how much damage he actually did, it looks like the captains are going to be much more of an asset than we thought.
