272. Don’t Kill My Volupture
Despite feeling mostly transitional, this was a pretty good chapter.
Obviously, the first point of interest was the reiatsu surrounding Ichigo after Ulquiorra left. As I’ve said before, it’d be boring if we got another visit from Hollow Ichigo or Zangetsu, regardless of how much I’d like to see them. But if Hollow Ichigo does come out, then he should still lose to Ulquiorra. That way, Kubo won’t be able to use him as a deus-ex plot crutch, it’ll shatter his aura of invincibility, and it’ll prove that Ichigo has to synchronize with his Hollow if he really wants to get stronger.
Next, we had the revelation of the “Flaccion”, or the Seated Officers of the Espada. But what’s the point? The Espada shouldn’t need personal attendants for anything in the first place. It looks like they were basically thrown in to give the weaker characters opponents during the War. I wonder if they’re ranked?
Personally, I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see Renji fight at full power, or at least fight to a conclusion. At this point, I sincerely doubt that either Renji or Ishida are going to win, since we still haven’t seen Zaeruapollo release AND he’s not fighting alone anymore. So I expect that we won’t see a full-fledged fight until the Winter War.
But the last part of the chapter was the most striking one, by far. I totally didn’t see that coming, especially from such seemingly unimportant characters. But it was a nice move by Kubo to get Grimmjow involved in the arc, and a chance to save face after Aizen shitted on his existence. So if I don’t see some dismemberment in Orihime’s room next chapter, I’m going to be pissed.
Rating – 4 out of 5 (Very Good)
