284. Historia de Pantera y Su Sombres

Well, well…that was a pleasant surprise, wasn’t it?

I wasn’t expecting to see any insight into the Menos classes this early. Nor did I expect to see any of the Espada in their pre-Arrancarized forms. Seeing Grimmjow in his original Adjuuca form, the general design of his release looks much beter on a panther’s frame. That certainly helped warm me up towards the way he looks now—though I can’t really say that for his Fraccion. None of them look any better to me now. But it was still cool to see them like this, because it opens up the chance for seeing other Espada with full masks, along with how they met their Privaron, during this arc.

As to Grimmjow becoming their leader, I thought the way it was done was kind of…off. On the one hand, they all revealed how little they thought of D-Roy once Rukia killed him. But here, he was used as a marker for Grimmjow’s strength. It’s a pretty inconsistent way of doing things—if Kubo had wanted us to think that, Grimmjow should’ve gone after one of the others or fought them all at once. Plus, D-Roy’s failed “Eye Cero” from the Rukia fight makes no sense, if there was just a huge wound under his bandages. Long story short, Kubo whiffed on that one. The imagery was great, though.

We got some more Shirosaki masquerading from Ichigo this time around, as he kept sneering at Grimmjow even after getting shanked. It’s nice to see him retaining his confidence in the face of the deteriorating situation; that way, it will make more sense when he wins. Granted, it’s not the same as Naruto or Luffy, who only focus on winning to achieve their goals; Ichigo simply isn’t intimidated by Grimmjow’s homicidal rambling. Does this foreshadow the shift in character dynamics I alluded to last time? I certainly hope so, but only time will tell.

I don’t expect this fight to go beyond 286. Ichigo hasn’t had a single fight in the series that went longer than a volume and a half, and we’re quickly approaching that. Plus, the last page was a “Hakutei-ken” moment of sorts—Grimmjow’s going to use his best stuff next chapter, so it wouldn’t make sense for the fight to keep going once Ichigo deals with it. They have, after all, beaten each other bloody, so they can only push themselves so much more. I can’t wait to see how Kubo wraps this up.

Rating: 4 out of 5 (Very Good)

On 283:

I was planning on doing a double release review with this one, but I’m simply too tired. I’ve been working at my parents’ medical office, sometimes up to 10 hours a day, so I won’t be broke once I go back to college. That was why I didn’t post anything last time; I was so beat, I simply couldn’t push myself to do it.

I’ll do my best to put them out consistently from now on, but that’s going to be tentative until the end of August because work is kicking my ass. So please, don’t hold it against me.
